Yikes! This has been a really bad summer for WSF, and the San Juans in particular.

The Issaquah went out yesterday too, but the Sealth was able to take over most of the rest of its service day, and it got fixed by the start of service today.

Klahowya should have been kept active until Labor Day. She's desperately needed.

Compared to the problems Washington State Ferries is having, BC Ferries would be in a unfathomable bind if they had so many breakdowns with their vessels. The main culprits for BCFS has been the two old grand dames, one of which will never be a problem again. Problems appear to crop up across the fleet for our neighbours to the South.

The Samish is heading south (just off the south end of Whidbey Island as I type this), most likely to Eagle Harbor.
The Kittitas won't be available until the end of next week at the earliest, the Spokane is unavailable until mid-September and who knows when the Yakima will be back.

I guess we get to find out how well the rudder on a KdT does when it noses into gravel. From the design of the vessel's rudder, one would expect an expensive repair.

This is the official bulletin: www.wsdot.wa.gov/ferries/schedule/bulletin.aspxThis is turning out to be quite the summer for WSF, one I'm sure they would like to forget. Aside from one bright spot, MV Chimacum entering service, the rest of this summer seems to be one disaster after another. I do not recall having so many boats out of service at the same time for repairs, maintenance, or whatever the reason be. Hopefully, Salish can be repaired quickly and 2-vessel service can resume at PT-CPV, and the same goes for Samish. This is the 2nd time this summer the 4-boat emergency schedule has been invoked.

[ This could be a summer of "if it floats, it's in service" meaning the Evergreen State and Hiyu would probably be getting some playing time somewhere if they were still active. The Klahowya would be useful if it was not decommissioned.

The Anacortes/San Juan Islands and Anacortes/Sidney ferry routes will resume their regular Summer 2017 schedule Wednesday morning with the Yakima rejoining the route. The Yakima’s return means the route can return to its regular five-boat schedule. Passengers can resume making vehicle reservations for the rest of this week and beyond at TakeAFerry, and customers with existing reservations will be able to keep their initial bookings.

And, here are two messages sent out tonight: *** *** *** From: Washington State Ferries <WSFAlert@wsdot.wa.gov> [Edit Address Book] Subject: Ferry Alert: PT/Coup - Salish Remains Out of Service Friday, Full Service Saturday & Sunday Date: Aug 10, 2017 7:39 PMThe Port Townsend/Coupeville route will remain on one-boat service tomorrow, Friday, August 11. An underwater dive inspection uncovered more damage than expected to M/V Salish. The damage found will require the vessel to go out of service through at least the end of August while repairs are made. As a result, a series of vessel moves are planned to restore two-boat service to the route for the busy weekend ahead. M/V Chetzemoka will join the route Saturday to restore full service through Sunday.
For Friday, August 11, reservation holders for all sailings will be prioritized on a first-come, first-served basis for all in-service sailings on M/V Kennewick (vessel #1). New reservations will be unavailable for the day, and stand-by space may be very limited or unavailable as reservation holders from both vessels are prioritized on each sailing. Be advised that stand-by customers may be turned away at the tollbooth, or instructed to come back later if reservation holders fill all staging lanes. Reservation holders unable to travel will not be charged a no-show fee. Alternate routes (Edmonds/Kingston and Mukilteo/Clinton) are strongly advised while the route is operating with one vessel. Please see the online schedule for vessel #1 departure times: www.wsdot.com/Ferries/Schedule/scheduledetailbyroute.aspx?route=pt-keyRegular service resumes on Saturday, August 12 through Sunday, August 13. Reservations remain open for these dates, and customers with existing reservations will be able to travel as reserved. This alert was sent on 8/10/2017 at 7:38PM to subscribers of the Port Townsend / Coupeville route. *** *** *** From: Washington State Ferries <WSFAlert@wsdot.wa.gov> [Edit Address Book] Subject: Ferry Alert: Faunt/Va/SW, PD/Tah – Weekend 2-Boat Service 8/12 & 8/13 Date: Aug 10, 2017 8:26 PMDue to vessel maintenance issues, Washington State Ferries will move M/V Chetzemoka from the Point Defiance/Tahlequah route on the south end of Vashon Island to supplement the Port Townsend/Coupeville route - which has been operating without a second vessel since Tuesday – for one of the route's busiest weekends of the year. M/V Sealth will move from the Fauntleroy/Vashon/Southworth route to Point Defiance/Tahlequah. As a result, the Fauntleroy/Vashon/Southworth route will operate on the weekend two-boat schedule on Saturday, August 12 and Sunday, August 13 only. Beginning Monday, August 14, regular three-boat service will resume. We apologize for the inconvenience. Please refer to the Fa/Va/SW Weekend Two-Boat schedule at: www.wsdot.wa.gov/ferries/pdf/fvs_twoboat_Public%20schedule%20V10_20160915.pdfThis alert was sent on 8/10/2017 at 8:25PM to subscribers of the following routes: Fauntleroy (West Seattle) / Vashon / Southworth Pt. Not the best quality I was hoping for, this webcam capture of this latest vessel change becomes a reality and brings truth to the above service bulletin. The bright light to the left is the Tug GARTH FOSS towing the SALISH away to sick bay. The middle one is of the CHETZEMOKA making her "homecoming" arrival at Port Townsend. The smaller circle shows the masts of the KENNEWICK. This is as close as you can get of a pic of all three KDT ferries together. I guess this will add another chapter to the history of the Keystone run. I believe this will be the first time the CHETZEMOKA and KENNEWICK will have served together on this crossing. enjoypt.com/port-townsend-web-cam/

Salish is going to be out of service for some time. Her estimated return to service last i heard was some time near labor day. The rope in the previous pictures worked its way into the strut bearing and came out the backside. Shafts need to be removed so its going to be a lenghty process. Ridder pins got bent where it stuffed into the beach but the major damage came from when she was backed into the breakwater in keystone while trying to free herself from the beach. Prop on the number one end is in need of new blades and the number 2 end strut bearing needs to be rebuilt as well. The rudder stall issues has not been fixed and it is hoped it will be debugged during its time at dci.

This cam captures the SALISH, being assisted by the tugs GARTH FOSS and ROSARIO, on her way to Dakota Creek. Arriving Dakota Creek. We'll likely see her on dry land soon getting repaired. We thank Skagit County for the source of pic above. Please visit their ferry site! www.skagitcounty.net/Departments/PublicWorksFerryGET WELL, MV SALISH! WE NEED YOU BACK!!

From what I understand of the rudder stall issue, which is said to have caused the grounding, is that the hydraulics powering the rudder is insufficient to move the rudder in all operating conditions. If true, no quick & easy fix there.

Ferry Alert: Sea/Brem: Kaleetan Propulsion Generator Maintenance
Because of a pending maintenance issue with one of the M/V Kaleetan’s propulsion generators, the vessel will run on half power during the periods of 8:30 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. daily until further notice. This may cause delays on the Seattle/Bremerton route during non-peak hours, but it will allow the vessel to continue service on the route until WSF can address the problem. WSF apologizes for the inconvenience and appreciates your patience and understanding.
This alert was sent on 8/14/2017 at 1:47PM to subscribers of the Seattle / Bremerton route.
