I have never seen the New West before, so I ask this question. -Do they actually put overheights on the upper car deck on the New West? Yep, they do. It is not uncommon to even see cube vans up on the upper car deck. ...how is the ride compared to the Saanich or Vancouver. Quite similar, but the ride is a lot faster. I find that the aft passenger areas (especially the cafeteria) on Deck 5 have more vibration and noise when compared to the other V's, but it is nothing that is overly annoying...

Cube vans are able to use her upper car deck. As for the ride, you can definitely tell that she has way more power than the Saanich and Vancouver. That power however makes for some nasty vibrations in the cafeteria. BCF has tried to change that resonance by increasing the thickness of the deck plating which has helped a lot. When out on the top sundeck forget about having a conversation when going past the funnel there is quite a roar from all the fans and from the exhaust.

New West is back on the water, right next to the dry dock.

I was down in Vancouver today, and in between appointments I had time to go down and do a photo update on the Queen of New Westminster. Some things to note, with exterior changes: - 2 more doorways on the promenade deck, leading to the outer deck. -1 less car deck window on the upper car deck. The other window that's covered up was covered over in a previous refit 2 years ago. -No fire windows on the promenade deck, so you won't need to take some gravol before you take a trip on her (something you would need to consider on the Queen of Tsawwassen) -The Solarium is still very much open and exposed as a solarium. This surprises me. Now I know to avoid this ship on a busy Route 1 sailing!!!

Very Nice Photos, Chris. It's so funny looking at a ferry when it's covered in all that reddish-brown paint, I'm still debating if that is paint. That Car Deck window in the middle of the ship looks rather lonely.

I wonder what the design hull speed of the Vs/Bs is. For those who don't know, every ship has a speed that it can economically maintain. Once it passes the hull speed, you can put all the horsepower you want in the ship and it won't run much, if at all, faster. I don't think it could be much more than 21 or 22 knots. This was the first question that popped up in my mind when I read this discussion of her service speed. If the hull speed of the Vs is at least 21 knots, why was the Queen of New Westminster the only vessel to be repowered to take full advantage of that hull speed? When the rest of the vessels were repowered in the mid-70s, why didn't they receive engines big enough to take advantage of the hull speed?

The hull of the New West was modified when she was lifted to be more efficient. I do not know, but doubt the hull speed of the V's is 21 knots?

I somehow doubt that the hull speed is quite that high as well. I have no information as to what the hull speed is, that was just an "approximate guess". It could very well be slower.
As far as why not bigger engines in the other Vs, I have a couple theories.
a) Route 30 didn't exist at the time the others were re-engined, and that route is the only one that the extra power is necessary to keep the schedule. b) Even though the hull speed is higher, having bigger engines and going faster will still use more fuel than going slower.

How do the shipyard workers take the paint off of the vessle? Do they use some kind of torch to peel away at the paint? I often wonder how.

She has all the sleek and graceful lines of an ANVIL!!! She has a lot more graceful lines than the new angular box slash floating billboard ;D. She just doesn't look too pretty right now cause she's all in the raw without any paint on.

She'll look better after she has her gown back on. She's an old lady after all. 44 years old is like 80 years old in ship years. This is just what us Ferry Geeks call Ferry Porn.

Oh there is so much inappropriate potential to branch off that post, I don't even know where to begin. But I won't, because I'm not that immature... the mod squad won't be happy. But hey, if you want to take that chance be my guest.
I don't think many of us would like to see an 80 year old naked lady anyway. Except for maybe him... [ftp]http://students.washington.edu/uwisa/images/familyguy/quagmire.jpg[/ftp]
Righty-o then, changing the subject...

"Oh! Giggity-Giggity-Giggity-Giggity-Goo." If the New West is 80 in Ship Years the Steal Electrics are 160.
Okay, back to different discussion...
Uhhhhh...I've got nothing.

OK, so I know I had mentioned this a while ago, BUT.....
I took a drive past the New West this afternoon, to find red steel along the top of the solariums. It was a quick glance, so it's possible that the roof of the solarium is in progress now. Don't take my word on that just yet though.
