Scott and I have found out the hard way this evening that all remaining Route 30 sailings have been cancelled for the day. EC's forcasting 45 knot winds in southern Georgia straight this evening and early tonight. Wouldn't be pleasant to be out on one of the southern ferries in those conditions.

Not an actual service notice but according to to the Departures page at bcferries.com - obviously due to the redeployment of our Coastal Celebration to Route 2 - Route 1's two Spirit of Vancouver Island listed afternoon round trips have been cancelled.
-
Apparently the winds forecast for us down south for later have already arrived to northern sections of the Strait of Georgia...

After completing their first round trip of the day, all 3 major routes have cancelled their second round trip:
Route 1: 11am & 1pm
Route 2: 1030am & 1230pm
Route 30: 1015am & 1245pm
Other ferries currently holding at dock are the Powell River Queen and Queen of Chilliwack. The Queen of Nanaimo made it to Tsawwassen this morning and is now slogging her way back across the strait at 12 knots.

The schedule for this time period does not have the SOVI doing two round trips on Thursdays. I wonder why those even hour sailings are even mentioned. From the current conditions page, it looks like the 1500h sailing from both terminals has been cancelled.

My guess is that extra traffic was anticipated due to today being the Thanksgiving holiday in the USA.

Today's weather-induced carnage: Route #1 West: Service suspended at 11am; resumed at 5pm. 2 sailing car / 3 sailing OH waits as of 3:30pm with three sailings scheduled until the end of the service day. Anyone unlucky or unfortunate enough to arrive at TSA for the 11am sailing will have waited over six hours before departing. Route #1 East: Suspended at 11am; resumed at 5pm. 3 sailing waits as of 3:30pm with three sailings scheduled until the end of the service day. SWB not accepting traffic. Six+ hour wait for unlucky 11am passengers. Route #2: No service 10:30am-3pm. 6h30m+ wait for 10:30am passengers. 1 sailing wait westbound; 2 sailing wait eastbound. Both terminals still accepting traffic. Route #9: 10:10 sailing ex TSA completed but service suspended at 3pm.Route #17: No sailings today.Route #23: Service suspended at 7:50am. Route #24: Service suspended at 11am. Northern service: NorEx held at PR due to hurricane force wind warning in Hecate Strait. Winds of 75 knots with 9m seas expected.More bad weather expected in Georgia Strait south Friday night through late Saturday.

Glasseye, that bad weather comes at a bad time for Grey Cup weekend. Yikes! Should the weather be that bad until Saturday night, Sunday morning is going to be a zoo. Hopefully extra ferries are put on if that is the case.
No updates as of yet but, it looks like the 1700h sailings on routes 1 and 2 are not sailing. Checking the vessel positions page for routes 1,2, and 30, all vessels are in their home ports except for the CC. It appears that it is doing a not in service run bound for SWB.
It also appears route 30 is still accepting traffic and service was suspended from 1015h. Along wait there as well for those unfortunate folks.

According to Chek news they said the ferries will be resuming at 6pm from both Tsawassen and Swartz Bay with extra sailings put on at 8pm 10pm and 12 midnight from both TSA and SWB this is according to Chek News . Not sure about the other routes though.

Confusion is reigning. Siitech shows that all southern major vessels currently in service except for the QoNW resumed sailing at around 6pm. QNoW pulled out of its berth at TSA at 6:30pm. However, both the terminal conditions at a glance and live departure page are announcing different late night service patterns than have been announced by service notice and the media. Departures shows no extra service from DPB tonight even though a 11pm sailings has been announced by service notice.Worse, departures shows both 1045pm sailings for #30 as planned even though both have been cancelled according to a service notice. It's also unclear if SWB is accepting new traffic or not.

Good to see sailings were able to get under way for the evening. A lot of confusion everywhere. I was working and we had the radio on CKKQ (the Q), there were many callers wondering what was going on for all routes. It seems route 30 ended its service day early with routes 1 and 2 going late into the night. Route 2 is over an hour behind its revised schedule. The Oak Bay is still at Dep. Bay and the Coquitlam left HSB about 15 minutes ago. Both vessels on route 1 have just left the terminals and are only 15 minutes behind schedule.

I like how the service notice for route 1 at 1730h showed the sailing times in the evening, they were in the 24 hour clock format.
Please be advised that the Spirit of Vancouver Island and Coastal Renaissance will be resuming service at 18:00 on the Tsawwassen – Swartz Bay route: Revised schedule as follows
18:00 departing Swartz Bay and Tsawwassen
20:00 departing Swartz Bay and Tsawwassen
22:00 departing Swartz Bay and Tsawwassen
24:00 departing Swartz Bay and Tsawwassen

Posted Saturday, November 26, 2011 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Update as of 8:30 am.
Please note that the MV Kahloke is currently operating on a "drop and go" schedule due to high seas in the vicinity of the docks on Denman and Hornby islands.
The vessel will continue on this modified schedule until the weather abates at which point the published operating schedule will be resumed.
For traffic updates or more information please call us toll free at 1-888-BCFERRY (223-3779), check our website at www.bcferries.com/ or go to mobile.bcferries.com on your mobile device. Can anyone elaborate on what "drop and go" means?

Can anyone elaborate on what "drop and go" means? I searched Google and got nothing. My assumption is that it's short-form for 'drop everything and go', and they'll have the crews waiting at the terminal for the moment the seas calm down, at which point they'll load up the ferry and fly out of there before the weather has a chance to worsen again.

With big seas, speed would normally be reduced and they are possibly steering weather courses so the schedule goes out the window. They would be making landings when they are able, offloading and loading if they can hold onto the ramp and getting away without waiting for a scheduled departure time.

I concur. No lingering in the dock. Just get in to the berth, change the traffic, and then get out again. ....and hope that those ignorant and infantile Hornbians don't complain about a summer-ship being used during winter storm season in a wind-tunnel of a route. ;D (this is satire, really)

Again from twitter (this person has a fun job!), BC Ferries is saying that the Kahloke was unable to dock at E. Denman and had to return to Hornby. @bcferries BC Ferry Services - Severe weather: captain unable 2 unload traffic frm Hornby onto Denman East, will B returning 2 Shingle Spit 2 stay until further notice ^rb I guess it doesn't help that, according to BC Hydro, half of Denman and all of Hornby are without power.

The Kahloke has no business being on that run in the winter. The frequency of windstorms in recent years would create problems for Tachek as well, but not as often as for a k-barge. I believe I read that Hornby had sixteen power failures last winter. The Comox area seems to always get hit the worst by wind, from what I see following Environment Canada.

Judging by the Weather in the last week, I'd say you are correct on that note. Especially since I've had to work through some of it. On another note the Poor Chilliwack has not sailed since about this time last night and unfortunately, I'm among those affected I was hoping to spend Saturday and Sunday in Nanaimo visiting my Friend, but those plans got cancelled with the Weather. Also, sorry Sean, Your recording of the Chilliwack's 'Karen' Announcements will have to wait.
