The theme for the March 2011 Flagship Contest is "Between Friends"What we are looking for are auto ferries that cross the border between Washington and Vancouver Island, British Columbia - that's the "between friends" part. Any car carrying vessel, past or present, that has traveled between our two great lands as part of its normal route, is eligible. Current eligible vessels include:MV Coho (Port Angeles - Victoria) MV Elwha (Anacortes - San Juans - Sidney) MV Chelan (Anacortes - San Juans - Sidney) Past vessels may include, but certainly are not limited to:Princess Marguerite III / Royal Victorian (Seattle - Victoria) the Stena vessel that also served that route for a short while Princess Marguerite II (Seattle - Victoria) Chinook I (Seattle & Port Angeles - Victoria) Kalakala (Seattle & Port Angeles - Victoria) SS Iroquois (Seattle & Port Angeles - Victoria) SS Olympic (Port Angeles - Victoria) Also, numerous WSF and Blackball vessels have served on the Anacortes - Sidney route over the years, including Evergreen State, Kaleetan, Klickitat, Chippewa, Vashon, and others. They are also eligible. As a side note, I'm kind of hoping Wett Coast will submit his great photo of Kaleetan at Sidney in the late 80's - hint, hint Rules:1. The vessel must carry automobiles 2. The vessel must cross the border between Washington and Vancouver Island, BC, on any of these three routes: - Seattle - Victoria - Port Angeles - Victoria - Anacortes - San Juan Islands - Sidney 3. We recognize many of the eligible vessels serve, or served, other routes, besides their international crossings. We are looking for photos of these vessels on their trans-border routes ONLY. For example, we will not accept a photo of Kalakala taken while serving at Bremerton. 4. We will be a little lenient on the Anacortes - San Juan Islands - Sidney ferries. Photos of the vessel in Sidney are preferred, but we recognize those can be hard to come by, especially the historic ones. So, for that route, if you submit a photo taken in Friday Harbor or Anacortes, or somewhere in between, as long as the vessel is heading to or from Sidney, we will allow it. A note of caution to thwart would-be cheaters: there are plenty of ferry-buffs here who have a vast knowledge of our ferries, past and present, and we will use them as a resource should any "questionable" ferry placements get our attention. That means no photos of Yakima, for example, somewhere in the San Juans with the claim that it is heading to or from Sidney ;D --------------------- Submissions are limited to 3 per member, and the due date is 9:00pm PST on Sunday, February 27th, 2011. Regular rules regarding photo size and nomination requirement are here: ferriesbc.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=flagship&action=display&thread=3510- take a look at last month's thread to see how the nominations are done, with the display pic and the full-size link. And ask questions if you're not sure.

I'm assuming the Victoria Princess (aka Queen Of Prince Rupert) would not qualify (even though she was a car ferry) because she did not carry automobiles while on the Seattle - Victoria route.

I'm assuming the Victoria Princess (aka Queen Of Prince Rupert) would not qualify (even though she was a car ferry) because she did not carry automobiles while on the Seattle - Victoria route. I think I might actually allow that one because it was capable of carrying cars. Besides, it would make a great entry.

I don't have any photos of her, but would the Wickersham be included? Since she was built outside of the States, she had to serve an International route, so didn't she go Bellingham-Prince Rupert-[insert Alaskan city name here]?

I don't have any photos of her, but would the Wickersham be included? Since she was built outside of the States, she had to serve an International route, so didn't she go Bellingham-Prince Rupert-[insert Alaskan city name here]? Back in those days, she probably went Seattle-Prince Rupert-Ketchikan..... I suppose that one would qualify under my current rules of a route between Washington and British Columbia, but I think I may now revise that rule to exclude the Alaska route, simply because we've seen some Alaska Ferries entries recently (good ones I might add). My intention for this flagship was to capture the vessels that go between our two countries in the Lower 48. Thanks for mentioning it.

Luke brought up a good point about the Alaska Ferries route between Bellingham or Seattle and Prince Rupert. We've seen some good AMHS flagship pics recently, so I modified the rules to exclude that route. Specifically, I am looking for vessels that travel, or traveled, between Washington State and Vancouver Island.

:)you know after all these years the Coho still makes a striking pose and it may be well past prime, but will the new generation coastals, or northern wonder boats last even a fraction of this timespan? None of the off shore or non west coast designs have fared well over time, ie. the eastern designed Q. of the Islands, as opposed to the rest of Bennett's navy, all west coast designs! :)mrdot.

Question for EGfleet, prompted by the above photo of the Kalakala in Victoria in 1957:
I didn't realize Washington State Ferries had a terminal in downtown Victoria, as indicated in that picture. Which routes from Victoria were served by WSF and Black Ball at that time?

Question for EGfleet, prompted by the above photo of the Kalakala in Victoria in 1957: I didn't realize Washington State Ferries had a terminal in downtown Victoria, as indicated in that picture. Which routes from Victoria were served by WSF and Black Ball at that time? WSF took over the Black Ball terminal in the late spring/summer season of 1955-59 after Captain Peabody pulled the Chinook from the run. At that point, there was no Black Ball service from Seattle to Victoria--which is why WSF was on the route. Black Ball Transport was sailing to Victoria using the heavily remodeled Iroquois. She was a diesel freighter by then, running from Seattle-Port Townsend-Victoria run hauling mostly paper products I believe--but no passengers. She ran at night and may have used the same dock. Black Ball's offices were still located in the same building that you see in the photo, from what I remember, hence both names on the building. All of Peabody's fleet at that time were operating in Canadian waters only. WSF ran from Port Angeles to Victoria until the end of summer of 1959. The Coho came online in December of '59 and at that time I figure the "Washington State Ferries" likely came off the building. WSF was running to Sidney during the same period, late spring and summers only as well. Year-round service was established for the first time I believe in 1960 with the Evergreen State. (Barnacle knows for sure.) Prior to that Black Ball had only run it as a seasonal operation as well. Before the Evergreen State became the main Anacortes-Sidney run, you'd have had a mix of the Klickitat, Vashon, Chippewa and Nisqually on the Sidney route, although I've got photos of the Illahee as well. The Quinault was pretty much a "Vashon Boat" in those days. She stayed on that run for some 30 years. Here's a close up from the Malahat photo in '51: And from the Kalakala shot a few years later:

:)a few years later, the brand new BC ferries took over the office block above the Black Ball dock, and it was the first headquarters of the newly formed crown corp. and a few years later in early 1966, I went for my first positiion on the brand new QPR! I can remember a school trip over to Pt. Angelis on the Kalakla, boy did she roll on the Jaun de Fuca! :)mrdot.

I can remember a school trip over to Pt. Angelis on the Kalakla, boy did she roll on the Jaun de Fuca! :)mrdot. Apparently the Malahat was no picnic either. One article I read said she "routinely terrified her passengers with her heavy rolling." Probably not too surprising Peabody pulled her off the run and sent her off for scrapping not long after.

:)thanks to whitecoast for submitting my old neg, of WSF at Sidney, but I am still fixated by those wonderful shots that EG submitted of the old days in Victoria's inner harbour, and the old black ball docks and the old timers that once docked there. We did another trip on the opposing side Princess Joan, over to Pt. Angelis and I don't remember if she even rolled more than Kalakla, but they were slender hulls, and fared poorly on the straits! I spent alot of time tramping the old CPR Belville St. warves and can remember back far enough to snapping shots of the laid up Elaine, Louise, Patrica etc. :)mrdot.

:)back to EG's wonderful shots of black ball's old Victoria docks and the venerable old Iroquois, I don't think a stroll on open deck would have gone well out in the open straits, and the upper offices of old Victoria docks, which would become BC ferries first fleet house, might just have been a little more cost effective, than the present digs. I guess Capt. Peabody must have thought his buy out of the Canadian end of Black Ball's operation was mana from heaven by the big spender of those days! and to think in 1960's $ that was quite a sum for elderly tonnage, with the possible exception of Chinook! or high priced Horshoe Bay property! :)mrdot.

We have some very good entries so far. I just realized something. I set the nominations deadline for February 28th, which is actually when the voting should be closing. I have now revised the nominations deadline to Sunday, Feb 27th, 9:00pm. I'm giving everyone an extra hour to get their submissions in because I will have obligations on the 27th which won't get me home until after 9:00. So, to re-iterate, submissions are due by 9:00pm on Feb 27th, not the 28th. Thanks!
