For April, we're going to take one out of the suggestion box. Please submit photos that portray our beautiful West Coast environment - the water, sky, sunrises, sunsets, mountains, islands, birds, animals, cities, forests. - The one thing all your entries must include is the wake of a ferry.
- The photo must show visible wake from the stern of the ferry, disappearing into the west coast scenery.
- The photo must also include the horizon (ie. water and land/sky) Idealy, the ferry won't even be in the photo - however if it can't be cropped out or adds to the image in some way, I will accept it. There can be other ferries in the background, but remember, the idea of April's banner is to highlight the coast, not the ferries. As Flugel put it, more concisely... ie. - The focus is the scenery that you see when you look back at your wake. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Nominations will end on March 30th at 8:00 PM PDT. Voting will occur shortly thereafter. As usual, please note that the maximum dimensions for submissions is 960 x 240. We will allow a spread from 840 x 200 up to 960 x 240 for the header image. Please post your entry as a reduced image to the forum with a maximum width of 800 pixels, as well as a link to the full-sized image below. For further information, please see our Forum Flagship Rules .

Scott, thanks for the entries. The first photo is what I was picturing as next month's banner. So maybe I'll make a second rule just to clarify, that the photograph should include water and land/sky (ie. the horizon).

Question for John and for others who have some opinions: Based on the submissions so far, we have some photos that show a clear wake, and some photos where the wake is barely visible (Quatchi's first photo comes to mind). So, here are 2 prototypes from me, just to get some opinion on whether each qualifies for John's theme: A picture with a barely visible wake: A picture with a clear wake: What do you think? PS These are not my official submissions for the month.

This begs the question as to how one defines 'the wake'. Is it that foamy water produced by the action of the revolving propellers, or does it include all 'disturbance' visible on the water's surface including bow waves?
I know that when out in a small boat (such as a canoe) and you are faced with big waves from the wake of a passing large boat 'the wake' that you are concerned about is actually the large bow waves.
At any rate, I am prepared to live with whatever definition John H decides on.

PS These are not my official submissions for the month. I was wondering about that one. It is the wake, as it is actually the wave coming off the bow and stern of the ship, it just has no wash in it. I believe I was actually the one who originally posted the suggestion for wakes. My idea was really to play with the wash and the effect it had on a scene. I will let john come to a decision, but I am looking for a replacement for that shot. Cheers,

I realize that depending on the ferry and the sea conditions, the wake may not be too visible. This will be my clarification for what is defined as a wake. Hopefully it will clear things up! The visible wake from the stern of the ferry, disappearing into the west coast scenery. ps. Sorry for not being specific enough to start with!

Here is my entry: i139.photobucket.com/albums/q309/ferrynutseattle/ferrynutseattle2/FF_04_2011_A.jpgNo, this photo is not in black and white. This was taken on a cloudy day during the Paralympics last year. The mountains had a nice light dusting of snow. You could see the snow level in this picture. Quite an awesome sight. I had plenty of time between my hotel checkout time and my train ride back to Seattle. So, I took a ride aboard the QUEEN OF COQUITLAM from Horseshoe Bay to Langdale and back. This photo was taken from her stern as you can see a bit of her wake as well as some hardy souls aboard their sailboat on Howe Sound.
