Are you sure? I remember taking the Saanch late in it's career and I was pretty sure it was coaslized - The gift shop was greatly expanded and the flooring was re-done with that blue linoleum stuff. Any pics from the Saanich's last voyage?

It did receive an MLU sometime in the 90's. Nick says 1995, and that was clearly before the "new" BC Ferries and Coastalization program. Saanich still had its old BC Ferries teal carpeting and chairs last fall. Here are a few pics to illustrate: Queen of Saanich, Sept-2008Queen of Nanaimo, Aug-2008I wish I had better photos of Nanaimo - there are others here who have far better shots than I do, but the main differences between a "Coastalized" interior, and non-coastalized interior can still be seen in these examples. The new "coastal" look has that faux wood paneling, the blue floors with the green checks, that blue and green patterned carpet, etc. That teal colour from the BC Ferries of the 90's (ie. the original Spirit Class look) is most definitely gone on the coastalized vessels. And, as you can see, Saanich still sports that older colour scheme.

The Saanich was never "coastalized". She had the pre-privatization interior design right up to her decommissioning in November. I'd upload pics to prove it, but they're on my other hard drive, which isn't accessible right now.
The expanded gift shop was part of the upgrade she received in the mid-90s.

The Queen of Saanich received the work in late 1994, early 1995, re-entering service in June 1995. The aim of the programme, besides obviously aesthetic improvement was to increase secondary income, food, gift shop, and arcade games. All three areas received improvements. The Upper Deck restaraunt was a new format which was intended to be less exhaustive on staff resources. I believe it barely operated before being closed off forever. I know it WAS open in 1997.
Rebuilding of a similar nature was also to occur on the Queen of Vancouver. It was second to go in as it required less work than the Saanich due to the vessel's overall condition. Unfortunately, the scope of the Saanich project had to be increased as issues were discovered with the vessel, and general cost over runs lead the entire V Class Re-enhancement budget (2 ships) to be in 1 ship. All said and done the Saanich's new interior cost $2.7 million.
Given the pending Fast Ferry project there was little interest in finding investment for the Vancouver, and this is around the time finances were getting really tight at BC Ferries. Months earlier the board actually lost authority to approve large projects, which I believe this would have been categorized as. There was no intention to do work on the Esquimalt, as she wasn't seen to be long for the world.

The Queen of Cowichan received a relatively similar interior upgrade in the 90's. No other C's received such treatment. It was a similar color scheme (if I recall correctly) as the Saanich. One end (HSB end) had tables & chairs instead of the standard rows of seats that you see at the other end and other C's. It was probably a trial to see if it would boost revenue on board. My guess is that it didn't, thus why no other C Class received the interior upgrade prior to coastalization.

I stand corrected. But the gift shop was expanded... ok, makes sense (I'm glad I'm not living in some sort of weird twilight zone-ish world!) .

It's at Tsawwassen. The Queen of Vancouver is in the Background in Berth 1. and in the foreground is the Queen of Cowichan at Berth 3.

I'm pretty sure thats Tsawwassen with the Queen of Vancouver and the Queen of Cowichan because of the angles of the two ship's.

I'll take a different approach, Coquitlam and Esquimalt at Departure Bay.

Okay, I'd better get this started. Guess the Ferry, you get a point, If you can guess the location, you get another point, if you guess the correct year that's your 3rd Point. First one to get the most right wins! Your Picture... The Winner will be announced sometime at the end of the Weekend.

This thread hasn't been touched as of lately. Even though this is Saturday, I decided to present this treat for you. Can you guess the name of this ferry? The answer will be revealed about mid week in this first week of August. Oh, by the way, this forum's photographer did nothing to create this paint peeling (this was already like this when the exposure button was pressed). Good luck!

I am so bad at keeping schedule on this, yet I'm on here almost everyday... I have no guess but I'll let you know it was the New West departing Tsawwassen in 2005. Scott Wins for being the only one to get the Ferry right.
