[RANT] Why do certain Route 1 crews insist on using the single tone on the Coastals. Not only does it sound absolutely terrible, but it gives the impression of some rickety little fishing boat is in the pass. After spending a day last week with members of this forum on Galiano Island, it became frustrating to listen to two high-pitched B flats echoing between Mayne and Galiano Islands. Because of it, I didn't even bother getting video of the Renaissance and Celebration in Active Pass from the Bluffs or near Collinson Reef. Bob Swanson is probably rolling in his grave... [/RANT]

Scott, you are 'right on' about this. The V-class 3-tones sounded so good echoing through the pass. I know that the Coastals are capable of pretty much matching that sound.
Could it be that people living around Active Pass have asked BCF to tone it down?

Could it be that people living around Active Pass have asked BCF to tone it down? By using the single-tone, they are simply sounding the note of highest frequency. Sounding a chord is not necessary "louder" than using the single-tone, it is simply adding the two lower frequencies to combine into a more full, complete sound. Kudos to the bridge crews on the Coastal Inspiration and Northern Expedition who know what a ships whistle should sound like. ;D

Time for Route 1 to man up their boats. Do the right thing.

Is it time for an official petition? I can whip up a document if wanted! EDIT: Made one anyway. Link to thread HERE.

Sorry, I was not pushing the horns in the video. Just a video of the pass.

I was kind of lost as to where to put this, but I hope I stuck it in the right place. Like the Pacificat video I posted earlier, this video looks to be shot by the same forum user who posted several fantastic time lapses of our vessels. This video shows some V-Class and Capilano action, shot from the perspective of a first-gen C. If I had to take a shot, I'd say that was the Coquitlam and Esquimalt, but perhaps an older, wiser member (cue White Coast ) can enlighten me on the actual ships shown. The video looks to be shot in the late nineties/early millennium. The V is first shown arriving at Berth 1 at the 0:12 mark, followed by driving on Deck 4 of the C at 0:32. For you Capilano and V fans, the duo show up again around the 1:48 mark.

The V class is not the Vancouver/Victoria due to aft end ventilators sticking up out of the roof of the old upper deck restaurant. That leaves the Esquimalt or Saanich. In that I do not recall the Saanich ever seeing service out of HSB, that leaves the Esqui. That third upper car deck window is fuzzy but does look a bit less tall, also.
As for the C1 class, I don't see any clue to confirm which one it is, but assuming that the Esquimalt was doing route 3 than that would mean the C was on route 2 and that make it more likely that this is the Cowichan.
The low snow on the mountains suggests that this is not a summer video. More likely late winter or early spring.

From May 18, 2012: Coastal Inspiration morning. How'd you like to have this house, on the eastern side of Active Pass? On the opposite side of Active Pass in Miners Bay, is this hotel (Springwater Lodge), next to a tree which was planted by the King & Queen of Canada (May 1937). Swartz Bay dog Tsawwassen gulls

Captured this scene from MV Chelan in the San Juans heading to Orcas. What you are looking at is Peavine Pass between Obstruction Island and Blakely Island (on the right), and a spectaluar cloud cover with little bits of Mt. Baker showing

In the photo labeled Porpoise, are those Dahl's Porpoises? They kind of look more like Orcas.
