This shot shows whatever that is on the funnel quite well. Curious what it is?! LNG related? Rather abrupt addition to the look of the ship. Guessing it's the vent stack from the LNG tank. It has to be a certain height above the deck and away from ignition sources. On the Salish class it goes up the forward mast, I think. Everything around it in a certain radius must be intrinsically safe.

I am already anxious and Fired up just waiting for the Spirit to start heading home. She is looking great. Yes it sure does give you a differnt perspective when you see our Largest ship amongst other European ferries. And I thought the Spirit of BC was huge when I had my first tour of her in Vancouver, HA!
It also is a good perspective when you remember the size of the Ex Stena Danica (QTN) beside the Spirit of BC. The QTN was a smaller vessel when next to the BIG Spirit, but yet, She was tiny in Comparisson to her modern Day Cousins and Sisters of the Stena line where she was born and spent her first few years of life. As a matter of fact I believe that was the main reason why Stena Line put her up for sale in 1974, She was too small.
Makes you think.
You still hear the odd Kid at the ferry terminal say look at the huge ferry boat. Yes, we all are guilty of it in our innocence as kids But little did we know our ships are just tiny tinker toys in the Grand scale of the Reality.

I think there is a couple upper car-deck level openings which are now covered for slides, and the rest look covered but are just being painted - that is based on my highly unscientific examination of available photos on Instagram.

That latest photo provides a better angle of what’s going on. The LNG tank needs a vent mast, so it would make sense if that second mast just aft of the forward mast is exactly that. Now, at the same time, there are Navigation lights that are located on the (original) forward mast, as well as the forward end at the top of the funnel. My guess is that this extended blue part on the funnel has something to do with that, and the fact that there’s now another mast in the way. So here’s where it gets tricky trying to explain what is happening here. -Ships over 50m in length must show two masthead lights. (White lights situated on the two seperate masts), in addition to the sidelights (red and green), and the sternlight (one white at the stern). Each of those lights have specific arcs of visibility, but that’s not important in this context -Forward masthead light on the SOBC is on the Forward Mast -The aft masthead light is at the top of the SOBC’s funnel, which ends up being higher up than the forward masthead light (must be minimum 4.5m higher) -When an observer looks at the ship, as if the ship is heading straight at you, the observer must be able to distinguish between the two seperate masthead lights which should appear as two seperate lights in a vertical line (one above the other) -One must be able to distinguish between the upper and the lower light at distance of at least 1000m, so as for the aft mast head light to not be obscurred by the forward mast head light -Still following me? Well, this brings me to: -the new mast likely obscurs the view of the aft masthead light from the head-on point of view, so they had to raise the aft masthead light. For basic visuals of what I just explained, refer to this: goo.gl/images/uiwSymThese rules are specified in the International Convention for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGS). Otherwise, that’s just my own two pennies worth, and we’ll obviously have a better idea once she’s finished.

What I don’t understand is since the Queen of New Westminster is currently tied up at Tsawassen Berth 1 and isn’t scheduled to operate again until March 16th why not use her as the #3 boat right now, have the Spirit of Vancouver Island operate normally and have the Renaissance replace the Inspiration or Celebration right now BC Ferries can actually be surprisingly responsive regarding questions about their service model. Why not ask them, and get back to us if they reply? I did almost immediately and finally got a response today Thank you for taking the time to write to us regarding vessel disposition. I have shared your feedback with the appropriate management team for consideration. Please allow me to explain, during our fall/winter season we schedule our vessels to undergo refit on a rotational basis to avoid undue impacts on service. We looked at all available options to avoid the Queen of Coquitlam on the route between Tsawwassen – Duke Point due to the vessels lower height restrictions, but there is a combination of logistical constraints that make it unavoidable for the months of April and May. These include limitations of Tsawwassen crewing resources, familiarity and training of crew at different Points of Assembly with different vessel deployments, certificate renewal dates, and availability of space in shipyards. Our crews are trained on specific vessels and routes, which makes substituting vessels challenging as not all employees are trained on every vessel. I have been checking Spirit of BC on Vessel Finder every day for the past few weeks now, Waiting with eager anticipation for when she starts Sea Trials, Which should be REALY REALY Soon since she is schedualed to return to service on May 16,(according to BC Ferries RBI) Just over 2 months from now. Judging the time needed for her long voyage home, and Crew Training, etc she should be begining sea Trials at Anytime.
Does anyone have any "Insider" info or updates that they could share on the dates?

I had a look on AIS just now and she is surrounded by tugs and appears to have moved slightly from her original position. May be an interesting day.

As of 10pm PST, SoBC is currently moving in the river from where she's been tied up for... a while. I'm guessing this is the start of sea trials!
