I'll be quick, I don't have much time left, but I just picked up a copy of the long awaited update to "Pacific Princesses" (originally released in '77) By Robert D. Turner. Here is his update (on page 245) about the fate of the Cy Peck: "Sold by BC Ferries in 1966 to J.H. Todd & Sons for a floating fish-processing camp; April 18, 1975 to Canadian Fishing Co.; October 1, 1975 to J.W. Russel of Ganges; October 12, 1978 to W&S Logging, Campbell River; March 16, 1981 to D.K. Forsberg, Comox, B.C., sank at dock Nanaimo March 14, 1986, later raised and scuttled off shore." Hope that answers any questions.

I was looking at the pic of the Cy Peck pulling into Fulford. What's with all the British Flags? It looks like something from the 1600's??!!

The Canadian flag was the British flag up till the mid 1960's.

I think the british flags mean that Saltspring Island was a English settlers Island only a long time ago. Now do not forget, I am from England, and we have 2 flags for our country.

did she keep her engine and did it go down with her?

The Fanny Bay Inn, about 10 minutes south of the Buckley Bay ferry terminal on the old Highway had a couple pictures of that sunken ferry.

re the Sunken Ferry: Isn't that the ex-Cy Peck, and not our ex-lovely lady of the Island?

A tricky one......you are correct on both counts, Q-Burnaby-Teen.
Island Princess later became Cy Peck.
Confused? Well, there were 2 ships, both called "Island Princess".
The one that became Cy Peck was launched/laid in 1913. (the man that she was named for was a Victoria-Cross winner.....)
The one that is now North Island Princess was launched/laid in 1958.

Despite her short life with BC Ferries, Cy Peck was still a very handsome functional looking vessel and, in the days before large illuminated nameboards, she would have been pretty hard to mis-identify with her name writ so large on the superstructure. I don't think the Cy Peck ever had her name displayed like that when she was actually in service. A couple more, first from The Dolphin: And at Denman Island, '84.

Perhaps I'll send them a note asking what the Lady Rose's future is. That would be sad indeed to have the last link to the Union Steamships days severed, but time catches up with every vessel, and the old Lady has probably seen her share of rough seas in Barkley Sound. A few days back, I posted a few shots of the Cy Peck; here's another, giving a better idea of just how small she was. I wonder if this was the only ferry BC Ferries had that was only two car lanes. Maybe the George S. Pearson, also?

From the Salt Spring Island archives. Barbara Annable collection.
Presumably some time after the vessel was retired, location not disclosed.

Sketch of Cy Peck, from the Vancouver Island Military Museum: ...you can't see the wheelhouse or bell, but you can see his VC.

In that first picture, why are there so many Union Jacks hanging over the wharf? Is there some kind of ceremony?
