If you can judge by this news report it seems that they may have fairly deep pockets so they may last more than one season.

I wonder if vessels are going to be ones that Island ferry order. Yes - heard that on CBC radio, I can't recall who was talking but they seemed to know what was up.

I wonder if they offer competitive fares on the route.

Or, in one year: "Gudbye". We'll see how this one goes.

Additionally, the two vessels are currently moored at Damen's Song Cam Shipyard in Hải Phòng, Vietnam.

I am ready to say Hello to Hullo, providing that: - I can afford it.
- It lasts long enough for me to actually get around to doing it.
Smooth sailing to this new venture ...

I think this is a Damen Fast Ferry 4212, and the imo number for one of the ferries is 9870214. They should have put more information on their website

'Hullo'? Who came up with that name? The same people who thought up Boaty McBoatface?

'Hullo'? Who came up with that name? The same people who thought up Boaty McBoatface? I have a theory: At the meeting, the boss asked everyone "So, what should we name the company?" and after some awkward silence, the boss said "Um.. Hullo??" resulting in everyone standing up and applauding the boss's fantastic "idea." The end. (This is a joke)

Hopefully they have some better names for vessels unlike this stupid name for company. I wonder when rebrand will accord for this company.

What I am curious about is how much the basic fare will be? BC Ferries fares were supposed to go up yesterday. Reasonable connections from the Vancouver side to rapid transit, but I have not been in downtown Nanaimo in at least 30 years or more. Is having multiple class fares even viable on short run like this?

This new ferry could be interesting actually. They mention it will run late enough to get you back to the island from a "game". If that refers to the Vancouver Canucks 7:00pm games then we might be making a lot of trips over there, given that it goes right to downtown Vancouver. Games end between 9:30-10:00pm, so there's no current way to get back the same night if you want to avoid hotel costs.
Hopefully it's not too expensive, and runs late enough.

Thing is, though... if you choose to live on Vancouver Island, I assume it's partly because you're not concerned about going to entertainment events on the mainland. So, it's an open question as to whether having a transportation option back will create a market. I'm dubious. One thing that is clear though, is that this venture has fairly deep pockets. Two vessels, to start with. Maybe- unlike every other attempt that preceded them- they have the resources to wait for the market to establish itself. Time will tell. The thing that hasn't changed is that mainlanders have very little reason to leave their cars at home and visit Nanaimo. So the success here will totally depend on the number of Nanaimo area residents who want to be foot passengers to the mainland, and past ventures haven't shown that to be a viable business model.

So the success here will totally depend on the number of Nanaimo area residents who want to be foot passengers to the mainland, and past ventures haven't shown that to be a viable business model. Given that the Vancouver port is located right near the sky train, I think this will be a fantastic option for islanders, assuming the ticket costs won't be absurdly high (which they very well could be.) If it ends up being reasonably priced, I would even take the drive up from Victoria for a late night hockey game, if it meant I could avoid hotel costs and make it back the same night. The ferries are always packed with Canucks fans going over for the matinee hockey games, but matinee games are becoming more and more uncommon. The latest ferries back to the island are always packed with fans coming home too. You are right though, if Nanaimo residents don't have much interest then it will probably fall apart.

I don’t understand this new ferry because the BC Ferries C-class take almost the same amount of time and are much better looking than these new ferries. But if they have outside areas they might be useful for taking photos of other ferries, and more ferries is always better

'Hullo'? Who came up with that name? The same people who thought up Boaty McBoatface? In the world of modern marketing the name is not all that bad. I compare it with various upstart no frills airlines (Jazz, Flair, etc). I guess the idea is that this new service will make it easier for you to say 'Hullo' to friends, relatives, events, etc on the other side of the pond. Whether or not they can find a pricing niche that will keep passenger numbers sufficient to keep their hulls afloat remains to be seen.

It is going to be interesting how they are going to compete with BC Ferries. I hope the price is reasonable for direct ferry from Downtown Vancouver compared to the time saved by taking public transit from Downtown Nanaimo to Downtown Vancouver takes 3 hours 39 minutes via BC Ferries, because I think might be reasonable for the time saved.

1. is there a way to insert a poll into this thread? 2. to keep things tidy, should this thread actually be inside that other one?
