Speaking of the dreaded substance mentioned above aboard the SIDNEY and TSAWWASSEN ... While attending the Open Ship aboard the PRINCESS MARGUERITE at Pier 48 Seattle after her inaugural voyage from Victoria for BCSS in 1975, I noticed some sprayed insulation (or fire protection) on the overhead deckhead in the new lounge on the Purser and Dining Saloon deck. This replaced the upper car deck which was established in 1972 (which replaced the deluxe staterooms and social halls). In 1981, ceiling plates were installed covering over the sprayed substance and "simulated wood paneling" covered over the exposed steel on the sides. I just wonder if that substance was asbestos or something else? Hey FerryNut. I guarantee that was Asbestos Sprayed Insulation. I work in the remediation industry and for a long time cover it and forget about it was the normal process. Likely it was coated with Lead Paint as well because most ship coatings were until the mid 80s. Cheers Timmyboy

I think one of the issues with the Forum Flagship nowadays is the fact that many users are like myself and use the Tapatalk app. The only time we actually see the photos is when they are posted and when the poll is setup. Tapatalk has no option for displaying the flagship like the website.
My two cents

The old aerial car ferry between Boston Bar and North Bend, BC. - seen by me on Sept.13, 2013 where it is part of a roadside historical display in Boston Bar. This video shows: - a walk-about around the ferry car display - a sampling of the photos on display at this location. I can actually say that i rode this tram ferry a time or two. My aunt and uncle live in North Bend and we went up a few times before the bridge was in operation. I dont remember much as I was pretty darn young but I remember it being a site to behold, with the ferry floating beneath those cables.

Adams Lake cable ferry, seen by me in the morning of September 9, 2013. Flugel, This is a fun ferry sometimes, my wifes Uncle has a cabin on the reserve land. Depending on who is running the ferry at the time they will almost beach it trying to stop it. Did you experience this, full speed ahead until the ramp stops you and then they back it out a little to drop the ramp properly.

And to think we used to mix asbestos with water and use it as modelling clay in elementary school. In the ultimate homage to lung disease, I remember making an ashtray out of the stuff... in school. But at least you knew it would never catch fire. ;D

To WCK,
Not wanting to throw all the asbestos info I carry around with but a warning I kept it short and sweet. I agree wholeheartedly with you when production was halted, however there is much more info out there than that. Not a rant but it is amazing the misinformation that floats around our world these days.
Use of asbestos was outlawed in production in 1986 but removal of product was not required by any jurisdictions. By 1988 those in metropolitan areas likely did not "see" any building products containing any more but in small areas it was known sales contiued for a long time. Currently WorksafeBC is rewriting protocol to require asbestos testing of all building products to 1995.
Another very interesting point is Canada is still the largest producer of commercially used Asbestos in the world, out of Quebec. We ship it to areas where the laws are as tight, say China, and then we recieve it back in "finished" form. We actually have to test sheet vinyl flooring and floor tiles that come out of China today for Asbestos content.
Ok well a small rant but I have had extended family members who have passed due to Asbestos related disease, Mesothelioma and Asbestosis. As well I have seen those who have dealt with Asbestos Warts, an ugly pervasive "wart" like growth on exposed skin. I want to educate all I can about what I have learned and helped our younger members who have likely never been exposed stay un exposed. ;D

Those are lovely Asbestos containing floor tiles you are playing with Luke. To all of our intrepid explorers out there please dont play with "old building" materials. I hear enough of of workplace disease in my job I dont want to hear about Playplace disease after work. ;D

Hey Karl, a little late reply but ery similar sort of day as was my trip to and from NJ. We came back into Seatac and up to Chilliwack at about 2am by the time it was all said and done. We were still sitting at the gate in Chicago when we were supposed to retrieving our bags in Seattle.
Oh well they were cheap tickets for us too and I learned a valuable experience, pay a little more and likely get a lot more. LOL ;D

Ah BCinNJ's not whining because he has been so lucky as to be able to go out to those East Coast beachs lately without need of a parka. I think he's even done it in his shorts as it was +15C the other day.

Thanks for all the comments Paul. much appreciated.
West of Revelstoke, I'll need to stop and see Craigellachie. I've only been there once, and didn't stay long. [/quote]
Another excellent spot with great views to sit and watch is Three Valley Gap with the Snow Shed/Tunnels. I was up there last year during the avalanch season. We were stopped for clearing of the highway when a Freight came rumbling through. Amazing sound with the Whistle going in that narrow valley.

A very interesting topic to find here today. I hadnt seen this story yet but it is very near and dear to my heart as I work for a Restoration company and this is something we deal with on a daily basis. Worksafe is difficult but the protocol with the appropriate training is very easy to follow. Yes it is expensive but lives are at risk and liability is huge.
One of my coworkers is working Hand in Hand with Worksafe right now to iron out new rules in regards to the identifiying, handling, remoaval and disposal of Asbestos. There should be some interesting developements in these stories in the future.
If anyone has any questions please PM me and I can get you in touch with the appropriate people to discuss this with wether it is a removal issue or a exposure issue.

Obviously that is Lake Champlain Transportation but me thinks that isnt on the West Coast. ;D The MV Dick Borch was used in Alaska; near Ketchikan I think... Flugel, you have to let a guy try and call his bro out.

To dumb down the use of Google Street View for those of us who can't find the time to use it properly here is a cool tool which makes it really simple. www.vpike.com/ The link is safe, I tested it today.

hmmmm...Paul's post about the final Fast Cat's departure in the torch relay thread left me wondering about the aforementioned departure just happening to occur just before the Olympic crowds start to arrive. It leaves me to wonder if there was a little backroom effort to have them out of the harbour prior to the games. Maybe trying to erase the last political boondoggle from the populace's collective mind before the next one steps up to the plate. ;D Just an idle thought... The two aren't connected. Amazing how some creativity goes way out of wack. I see that sort of thing all the time in political travels and turns out to be wrong. Entertainment, but hardly factual. Trust me there wasn't any "backroom" effort, since it couldn't be done anyway as the Pacificats are privately owned and have since been passed from one private owner to another. and yes I will be following the third and final Pacificat out to sea. You'll be able to see additional pictures of the first departure shortly with biblographed pictures from here... there... and everywhere.. Ah BCinNJ will just do anything to stir the pot. ;D

With the runway extention complete we may see more flights in but I am going to try and get some approach shots of this beautiful aircraft on its way in. Anyone else in the area that can get out for 7am should be able to get some great ones as well. www.castanet.net/news/Kelowna/49754/Kelowna-welcomes-largest-aircraftKelowna welcomes largest aircraft by Contributed - Story: 49754 Sep 24, 2009 / 1:46 pm Kelowna International Airport (YLW) will welcome one of the world’s largest aircraft, the Antonov AN-124, when it arrives on Saturday September 26 at approximately 7 a.m. The Antonov AN-124, arriving non-stop from Kazan, Russia, will deliver helicopters to Kelowna Flightcraft for maintenance and modification services. Accommodating the Antonov at Kelowna airport was made possible because of the runway extension from 7,300 feet to 8,900 feet in November 2008. “The arrival of the Antonov is a great opportunity for YLW to attract other long haul flights for commercial passenger and cargo flights and for very specialized aviation maintenance work by companies such as Kelowna Flightcraft and AVM Solutions Inc.,” says Sam Samaddar, Airport Director. Avionics Modification Solutions (AVM) Bob Monaghan, President and CEO states, “YLW may see one or two AN-124 operations a year for similar helicopter deliveries.” The Antonov AN-124 will be the largest aircraft to land at Kelowna International and may be one of the noisiest aircrafts residents within the airport’s flight path are expected to hear. The aircraft is expected to depart Saturday at 10 p.m. The Airport, Kelowna Flightcraft and AVM Solutions apologize in advance for any noise disturbance experienced. Aviation enthusiasts hoping to watch the aircraft land and take off are reminded there is no parking or stopping along Highway 97 or the north section of the airport on Old Vernon Road. Sections of Airport Way will be cordoned off, but still accessible from the North and South entrances of Highway 97. Recommended vantage points to view the aircraft’s arrival include the Ellison baseball field and the far east extension of the long-term parking lot (airport parking rates will apply).

As has been stated the Internet and Discussion groups are cyclical. You have to look at the situation compared to all other internet based groups.
Facebook is an excellent example in my opinion; when I first got my account I can't tell you how much time I spent there, wasted I should say, now two years later I might check it once or twice a month and usually only if I get a notification that a friend has messaged me. Will I go back on more a later date, likely there will be some reason.
Since April I have been an active member on this site, long time lurker before, and I haven't posted much. For me the info is the interesting thing. I have noticed though lately that posting seems to be way down and I would love to find some topic, other than this to spark some discussion.
Cheers and great Day ;D
