Not only that, but it looks like the Vashon route will be downsized for at least part of the 3rd week of November. The Issaquah goes in for annual maintenance (at least 2 weeks) at that time and is scheduled to be replaced by the Sealth for at least part of that time (it looks like the Kitsap would be filling in for the remainer of the period).

I just noticed this part:
"While there is no specific schedule travel time is 30 minutes."
I could've sworn it was longer than that when the detour to pier 52 was in place back in 2002 while the Fauntleroy dock was closed for repairs.

Except that not that many people are getting the enhanced licenses either. People just don't want the hassle, you have to make an appointment to get an enhanced license. And it doesn't exactly help that several licensing offices have closed down this year

WSF seems to be planning on having the Elwha as a backup on the international route. The dockside work scheduled for 10/26 - 12/24 includes upgrades/modifications needed to regain SOLAS certification.

Seems odd that they refer to this bus- and the tourist ones in Vancouver- as a 'trolley', when they're just regular trolley-less diesels with a faux-historical look. On one (now defunct) message board, these were often referred to as "tacky trolleys". One bus manufacturer offers a "trolley" version of their low-floor bus. www.gillig.com/New%20GILLIG%20WEB/trolley.htm

Bainbridge ferry disabled after 'hard landing'www.komonews.com/news/local/56232452.htmlSEATTLE - A car ferry on the Seattle-Bainbridge Island route has been removed from service after it slammed into Colman Dock late this morning. Witnesses told KOMO News that the Seattle-bound ferry Wenatchee came out of the fog as it approached the pier at a higher speed than normal and made a hard landing. The Wenatchee has been removed from service while unspecified repairs are made to the vessel. Service on the Bainbridge Island route will be reduced to one boat in the meantime. There were unconfirmed reports that one person aboard the ferry was injured as the vessel struck the dock. One witness said the ferry hit the dock so hard that it bounced back after impact.

That's pretty cool - had no idea our regional county and city transit systems were that interconnected, and could actually take you that far. Some of these connections are more recent (like the SKAT and Island Transit connection to Everett Station and the WTA buses connection to Mt. Vernon).

WSDOT seeks bids for up to three more new ferriesDate: Friday, August 07, 2009 www.wsdot.wa.gov/News/2009/08/7_wsdot-seeks-bids-for-ferries.htmContact: Marta Coursey, Director of Communications, 206-515-3918 SEATTLE – The plan to improve Washington’s ferry fleet takes another step forward with the advertisement today, Aug. 7, of a contract to build at least two new 64-car ferries. The Washington State Department of Transportation’s Ferries Division (WSF) is building four new ferries in the next five years to replace its aging fleet. Nine of WSF’s 20 auto-passenger ferries are between 40 and 60 years old and must be replaced in the next 20 years. The last new Washington State Ferry was put into service in 1999. The state recently sold four 82-year-old Steel Electric class ferries after they were removed from service for safety reasons. “Going to ad for these new vessels is a significant step toward updating our fleet and providing our customers a long-term, sustainable ferry system,” said Paula Hammond, Washington Transportation Secretary. “In addition, the investment in our ferry system is also an investment in jobs – for the state’s shipbuilding industry and for the local economies that depend on reliable ferry service. We have worked closely with the legislature, ferry-served communities, business leaders and elected officials to get to the point where we could say the ferry system’s future is looking brighter.” “This is a big step in solving the problem and restoring full ferry service for both Coupeville and Port Townsend. We ferry riders have been waiting for this day for a long time,” said Senate Transportation Committee Chairwoman Mary Margaret Haugen, D-Camano Island. “We’re happy to report that we’re making progress. Construction is well underway on the first new 64-car ferry,” said David Moseley, Assistant Secretary for WSF. WSF awarded a $65.5 million contract to Todd Pacific Shipyards in December 2008 to build one 64-car ferry, which is scheduled to be delivered in summer 2010. The Port Townsend/Keystone route is currently being served by the Steilacoom II leased from Pierce County. The 2009 Transportation Budget provided $114.8 million for construction of 64-car ferries in the 2009-2011 biennium, and $69.4 million in the 2011-2013 biennium. WSF will pursue a contract for the second and third 64-car ferries with an option to purchase a fourth 64-car ferry. However, if sufficient resources are available to build one 144-car ferry prior to exercising the option to build the fourth 64-car ferry, WSF will pursue procurement of a 144-car ferry instead of a fourth 64-car ferry. The bid package was posted on WSF’s contracts Web site on Friday, August 7. WSF will open bids on the additional 64-car ferries contract this fall.

Dumping buckets of money into to ferries that were beyond their life cycle and beyond practical repair (as putting new hulls on the boats would have made them ineligible to work anywhere but Tahlequah as the Coast Guard would not grandfather them any longer) did not make sense. Not to mention that they were functionally obsolete (for numerous reasons) and fixing that would've almost certainly resulted in a boat that would have less capacity. Everyone is very aware of the historic status of these vessels. I agree, it would have been lovely for one of them to be saved. They might have been worth saving if they still had their original wood passenger cabins.
