Back some time ago, WSF closed Fauntleroy for about one or two months for major work. The KALEETAN and ISSAQUAH were on the Seattle-Vashon run. The KLAHOWYA and QUINAULT were on the Seattle-Southworth run. The RHODODENDRON shuttled between Vashon and Southworth. A Steel-Electric was down at Tahlequah. Was this in the early 90's when the Klahowya crashed into the Fauntleroy dock?

From a service bulletin...
"Passenger-only service on the Mystic Sea has been extended through mid-February because of added work needed on the Steilacoom II. We will be taking vehicle reservations for sailings beginning February 15, and we will notify customers immediately if the status changes."
I wonder what the "added work" is.

From the square aft are three lanes on each side (6 total) of the center "island" which has access to the upper decks, crew quarters, machine spaces etc... That would explain the difference in the car capacity between the Taku and the Coho. The Coho has 4 lanes on each side (8 total) of the center island. Some pictures of the car deck of the Coho can be found here... ferriesbc.proboards20.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=nwf&thread=2284&page=1

Some ideas I have (a few probably have been suggested already) (theme titles in parentheses): - Spaulding designed vessels (Art Of Spaulding)
- Vessel interiors (Inner Beauty)
- Vessels under construction/undergoing MLU or other major upgrade (Ferry (Re)Birth)
- [Vessels in use after retirement (The Afterlife) - this would be restricted to pictures that show how the vessel was used after retirement and not showing the vessel in decrepid condition

From the "Remember When" section of the Kitsap Sun... www.kitsapsun.com/news/2009/jan/11/remember-when/In 1984 (25 Years Ago) — More than 100 ferry riders have signed petitions protesting poor heating systems on the Issaquah-class boats. It was so cold last month, as low as 8 degrees, that some commuters went to their cars and started their engines so their heaters could run. That's against ferry regulations, no matter how cold it gets. "Only by running heat ducts at the bottoms of all walls can we get the maximum heat," the petition states. "This would be forcing the heat up, not down. At the present, only the ceilings are being heated."

Some interesting things on the current maintenance schedule (last updated 1/9):
For most of the duration of the Hood Canal Bridge closure, the Edmonds-Kingston route will be significantly downsized. The Walla Walla and Puyallup will be on the route initially, but the Kitsap will replace the Walla Walla shortly after the closure.
The Kaleetan is schedule to replace the Issaquah while she is in drydock (the Kitsap will be replacing the Issaquah initally), which would be the 1'st time since 1995 that a super class vessel has been used on the Vashon route.
Not in service during the Hood Canal Bridge closure:
Evergreen State (dockside work) Spokane (dockside work) Issaquah (drydock, but would return late May) Kaleetan (drydock, after Issaquah returns to service) Hiyu (Eagle Harbor, most of duration of closure)

Maybe someone will reactivate one of those fast ferries sitting in the harbour that I've seen on and off in the yellow sheet for years. Too bad USCG regs prevent their use in the US. That could and should change. I'm assuming you're referring to the "must be built in the US if operating between 2 US ports" rule, which is part of the Jones Act and is not a USCG regulation.

In terms of SOLAS compliance.how did the Burnaby as the Princess Marguerite operate Victoria to Seattle?? I would assume she would have had to comply with SOLAS? To add to 'roeco''s question you can add the Queen of Prince Rupert when she went on the Victoria- Seattle run in 1981? In both situations I'm assuming that the vessels met whatever the SOLAS requirements were during the time they were used on the Seattle - Victoria route. I don't know when the requirements that resulted in the Evergreen State and Elwha going through significant upgrades went into effect.

It may not have ceased operations as originally feared. According to this post over at CPTDB, it should be back up and running later today (the wikipedia page says more or less the same thing as I write this).

The "built in Washington" requirement would have to be repealed for that to happen.
9 chances out of 10, good ol' Eyman would probably try to put an initiative/referendum on the ballot to repeal any raise in the car tab fee. Whether or not said initiative/referendum would pass I don't know.
As in the route turning a profit (which I don't think it has recently (if ever) under state ownership)?

The steel work is on the portside fender (I'm assuming that's the part of the car deck that touches the navigation dolphins). She's also supposed to get an automatic draft indicator system (are those standard?).

The only disruption so far today is due to refueling problems...
Ferry Alert: Edmonds/Kingston Route Cancellations
Extreme weather conditions have delayed fuel service to the Hyak. There will be no 10:50am, 12:10pm, and 1:40pm service from Kingston and no 11:30am, 12:55pm, 2:30pm service from Edmonds. The Hyak is expected back with the 3:10pm sailing from Kingston.
