OK - here's a question: Why is Sealth sitting in Anacortes and the Hiyu still on inter-island now that Elwha's back in the islands? I looked at the service bulletin about the Elwha returning to service and it said the Sealth would be replacing the Hiyu today. I assumed the switch would've happened yesterday.

If the Elwha is not ready by tomorrow, then I suspect one of the following will happen:
(1) Dockside work for the Spokane will be delayed.
(2) Someone (most likely Bremerton) will be short a boat.

The Kitsap has replaced the Issaquah. and according to the latest maintenance schedule the Sealth will take over for the Hiyu on the inter-island route once the Elwha returns (whenever that is).

She will be repainted as part of the dockside work. I'm assuming the exterior side walls will be done at a later time. The last time she was repainted was 14 years ago according to this

Hopefully it's not too serious whatever the problem is (it's not a good sign if they had to send her to Eagle Harbor).

Ferry Alert: Point Defiance/Tahlequah - Hiyu Continues Service Through February
"The 34-car Hiyu will continue to operate on the Point Defiance/Tahlequah route through Monday, March 2. The 48-car Rhododendron is scheduled to return to service Tuesday, after a two-month maintenance period. WSDOT Ferries Division (WSF) had hoped to return the Rhododendron to service this weekend but problems were found in the vessel's heating boiler during a routine inspection. Crews will be working throughout the weekend to make the necessary repairs. Additional morning and mid-day service continues throughout this period."

Way too many for just one vote a piece to produce decisive results. We should have been allowed to do more than one selection in the initial flagship poll, to even out the vote count a little. I agree. Something like the October 2008 prelim voting where up to 5 choices were allowed would've worked better here.

About 1/2 inch in my area this morning. Getting to work was a bit of a challenge due to bus service disruptions. The one I normally catch at the Fauntleroy ferry terminal didn't show up and I ended up catching one that only went as far as the West Seattle Junction and ended up waiting 20 minutes for one to downtown Seattle (it was running late because it left the garage w/o chains and had to be chained up at its layover stop). Finally got to downtown and ended up walking to work (took about 20-30 minutes).

There will be a preliminary ballot due to the high number of entries. Is the preliminary ballot happening this weekend? (who is doing it ?) I'm assuming that the prelim ballot would happen on the 26'th (current deadline) and the final ballot would happen the next night.

The Evergreens have a draft of 15'-6". The SE's had a draft of 12'-9". I'm not sure what the Steilacoom II's draft is. I think it's about the same or slightly less than the steel-electrics.

As far as I know, the Issaquah has full clearance on all lanes of the ship, so in theory, she could take a full load of overheight vehicles if necessary. You much be thinking of the Sealth (the only Issaquah class vessel w/o galley (side) decks).

Old ferries may get new lifeTacoma firm hints at 'preservation for reuse'seattlepi.nwsource.com/local/398462_oldferries03.htmlBy LARRY LANGE P-I REPORTER A Tacoma real estate firm Monday told the state it will buy four sidelined ferries for $650,000, apparently to turn them into some kind of development. Meanwhile, about 1,500 state ferry workers will voluntarily forgo raises they negotiated with Gov. Chris Gregoire last year because of the downturn in the economy. At a news conference Monday, Gregoire was joined by leaders from the five unions to announce the agreement, which she said would save the state $18 million over the next two years. The raises would have ranged from 1.6 percent to 10.7 percent. Gregoire and the Legislature are trying to solve a 2 1/2 - year budget deficit of about $6 billion. In the second round of bidding for the ferries Illahee, Klickitat, Nisqually and Quinault, real estate-development company Managing Green submitted the lone offer Monday to Washington State Ferries, which has been trying for several months to sell the 1927-vintage boats. Another firm, Shoreline-based Environmental Recycling Systems, said it would buy the ferries for $500,000 with the intent of towing them to Mexico and scrapping them. The company did not sign a sales agreement, however, and had delayed acting because prices had recently declined. When the ferry system asked for a second set of proposals to be submitted Monday, Managing Green submitted the lone offer. The four ferries were beached in November 2007, after inspections revealed corrosion in their metal hull plates. Managing Green could not be reached for comment Monday evening. Tim McGuigan, the ferry system's contract manager, said Managing Green's proposal involves "preservation for reuse" of the four boats, which were built and originally operated in the Bay Area of California before being brought to Puget Sound in the 1940s. McGuigan said Managing Green's plan involves mooring the boats at unspecified sites, but he declined further comment until he discusses the venture further with the company.

Having commuted on those boats...TRUST ME. You do NOT want them. ;D Why? 'Cuz they're fixer-uppers? Probably more like they would be quite unpleasant to ride in fairly rough seas.
