Well, look at that - May 17 for the Bear Cove Open House.
I was hoping they would release those dates soon. Now I can start planning a trip. Thanks for the heads up!

It is amazing that they are using photos in their press release that look all together like photos already on the Board. Wonder if staff got paid for their use. HMMM

New ferry open house Sunday Islanders will get their first chance to step aboard the new Northern Expedition ferry Sunday afternoon (May 3).
BC Ferries is hosting a three-hour open house aboard the ferry, from 2 pm until 5 pm. Spokesperson Deborah Marshall said everyone is welcome - just park near the Skidegate terminal and walk onto the ship for a self-guided tour and light refreshments. "I think you guys are going to be really impressed," Ms Marshall said. "The crew has been really pleased, it's more like a cruise ship." The Northern Expedition is bigger than either the recently-retired Queen of Prince Rupert or the other northern ship, the Northern Adventure. It is 155 metres long, with 55 staterooms, and can carry 600 passengers and 130 vehicles. Sunday's visit might be the last islanders will see of the new ferry for a while. The Northern Expedition will be serving the Prince Rupert-Port Hardy route starting May 18, while the Northern Adventure becomes the regular vessel for the Rupert-Skidegate route. Ms Marshall said BC Ferries chief executive David Hahn will be aboard the Northern Expedition when it visits Haida Gwaii Sunday. There will also be information available about BC Ferries' new northern holiday packages. Ms Marshall said the corporation is working with a travel agent partner and will be aggressively marketing these tours with a campaign that started last week. One of the tour packages offers three days on Haida Gwaii plus a ferry trip to Prince Rupert, with departures from Vancouver, Victoria or Nanaimo throughout the summer. www.qciobserver.com/Article.aspx?Id=3825© Observer Publishing Ltd.

I was wondering why the NorAD will still be doing the Fall winter spring schedule in to June when the Nor Ex starts the her daily Spring \Summer duties May 18th? NorEx is a DIRECT sailing between Port Hardy and Prince Rupert with NO STOPS at mid coast ports. NorAd will stop at Bella Bella (and sometimes Klemtu) on each of her Inside Passage sailings while the NorEx is running, up to June 9. The Nimpkish serves each of the Mid Coast communities (except Klemtu) every weekend thru June 9, meeting up with the NorAd in Bella Bella for connections. The Queen of Chilliwack begins serving the Mid Coast out of Port Hardy on June 9. The NorAd will, at that time, only serve the Queen Charlottes for the remainder of the summer. NorEx will stop at Bella Bella once every 2 weeks, each way, during the summer. This only commences after the Chilliwack starts on Route 40 and the NorAd is solely on the QCI run. This will be the only connection between the mid coast and Prince Rupert during the summer, unless you detour via Port Hardy. To answer your question: although the NorEx will have commenced its day cruise service, there is still a need to serve the Mid Coast communities, which is why the NorAd will do so until the Chilliwack begins on Route 40.

It is a bit of an oddity, though, in the sense that during late May and early June there is more service between Port Hardy and Prince Rupert than during the summer. For instance, on the 30th of May there are two departures from Port Hardy- at 7:30am on the NorEx, and 6:00pm on the NorAd.

This situation also occurs in September after the Wack is pulled off route 40. This schedule has been in effect for a number of years.

Man, that entrance at the bow looks skinny in that picture. It looks like a tight fit for a rig, but obviously it only looks that way in the picture.

Man, that entrance at the bow looks skinny in that picture. That's because the stern one is so 'fat', it forces you to make an unfair comparison. It shouldn't be too much of a problem, because, once they are through the short tunnel at the bow, the cardeck widens out quite quickly, and the center casing is set nicely back as well. And, remember, they can load from both ends on this one, so the trucks can drive on forward, too. It's the curved dock structure at Prince Rupert that the truck drivers probably curse more, especially when backing drop trailers down it. They probably curse the Norad and her single end loading as well.

After the ribbon cutting the Northern Expedition is away at sea. Scott and the rest of the West Coast Ferries roving reporters were onboard for the open house yesterday and some are onboard for the trip North. Weather is overcast. The Senior Chief Engineer demonstrated the high pressure mist water suppresion system (Hi-Fog) for them.

I'll post it on the NorEx open-ship photo thread: ferriesbc.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=photos&action=display&thread=4509Mr. Stapleton was a wonderful liason for us shutterbugs at the open-ship, getting us some nice access to the inner-workings of the ship. And when I introduced myself to the CEO of FSG shipyard, and told him that I was acquainted with Markus Brinkmann from internet, the FSG CEO's reaction was to fake a knee-shot to my gut! I think that's standard German greeting for "Good to see the folks that steal all of my steel-man's work time" ha ha ;D

Anyone know why she is so late tonight?? 10:45pm and she is passing Namu. I checked earlier around 1pm or so she was just in Grenville Channel. There must of been a delay in Rupert. Scott and Dane will have a late night tonight!

Scott and Dane will have a late night tonight! She's not actually delayed, it's just the GPS thingy that's stuck. Check the "as at" date on the current conditions graphic. She is stuck at 6:16pm for a few hours this evening. She's been stuck a few times on the current conditions page, over the past 2 days.

Her broadcasted plot is stuck from time to time, not herself (we hope! ). We hope she'll never get stuck in the muck. She is in good hands with a great crew!
