Yes i noticed this too...also noticed that there is a build gap between 749 and 750, of one year and couple of months. Let the speculation begin for yard 7xx (ie Coastal 'Experience', Northern 'Discovery') ;D The FSG site has this vessel as build 748. I think I should clarify...Yes, I understand that the Northern Expedition is yard 748...yard 7xx refers to the possible speculation that the year and two months will have something being built at FSG...maybe the 4th Coastal, the 'Experience' or a sister or little sister for the Expedition, the 'Discovery' my two cents any ways

As I understand it (I believe Markus pointed this out somewhere) is that the 7xx is allocated on the sequential basis of the completion of the contract for construction. It has nothing to do with the date of being built.

The schedules listed on FSG website for yard's 749 and 750 have a gap in between them of a year and two months give or take. The gap occurs from the time that 749 would be laundched until the time that the keel is laid for 750. i am indicating nothing other than this... i only used 7xx becausse i have no idea what number FSG will assign its future builds...

Stewie that is my recall as well regarding the hull numbers being assigned independently of the build schedule. The NorEx was signed later and since BC Ferries wanted their ships sooner than later they squeezed them in. Hence the NorEx Deckhouse being built outside the CaIhedral to lessen the length of time the hull is in there. That is also why the Bridge portions of the deckhouses were built by a subcontractor on the Coastals and the NorEx. All to keep things humming along and the distruption to a minimum. I believe Markus also told us the yard has a couple of years of orders signed.
BCFerries hopefully will squeeze one more in (the Coastal Experience) and thereby fullfilling the anagram of the Coastal RICE Class.

Those pics are great! I believe I am more excited for the NorEx than the Coastals. And that says a lot. But then I keep saying it . I think it is because the Inside Passage trip is one of those great experiences. I find that stress melts away with that much beautiful scenery and the pace of cruising. It isn't like a cruise ship so there isn't as many distractions - but I kind of like that.

I too am more excited about the NorEx, and seeing what she will do for the inside-passage experience. Like Chaing Kai-Shek before me, I'm looking forward to the northern expedition......

Ditto for me. New ferries are always exciting, but the Coastals are weird looking things, while the Northern Expedition is actually going to be quite nice looking, by modern ferry standards. It won't make us forget the ' North, but it will raise the standards after the NorAd.

Keel-laying for Yard-748 is tomorrow, June 16, 2008....according to the schedule on the FSG website.
I suppose they'll have the usual video posted in a few days.
An important milestone in this much anticipated new ship for our fleet.

I knew someone would capture it. Thanks for the screen shots Ferrynut and pics as usual Markus. I liked the pic of the module upside down. I will be tuning into the webcam lots in the next weeks I think. I was gone all day for the usual Fathers Day drive in the country. We had intended on going to Kingston for brunch and then taking the ferry to Wolfe Island. We were taking the #2 highway rather than the 401 freeway and got sidetracked by an antique car show in historic Port Hope. Ended up eating in a beautiful old hotel from the turn of the century and only made it as far as Belleville. Port Hope has over 120 buildings and homes listed on the historic register and the majority are restored beautifully. So the ferry geek side got sidelined for the car geek side .

My pleasure! FSG is really fast! Three modules have been set and an aft piece lays upside down and ready in the foreground. A very productive first day on the northern vessel. To be continued (as the old saying goes)...

For Immediate Release 08-039 June 16, 2008 NORTHERN EXPEDITION KEEL LAYING IN GERMANY New ship to enter service in spring 2009 VICTORIA –BC Ferries’ major ship construction program marked another major milestone today with the official keel-laying of the new 150 metre Northern Expedition at FSG Shipyards in Flensburg, Germany. The new Northern Expedition, which will replace the 42-year old Queen of Prince Rupert, will accommodate 130 vehicles and 600 passengers. Among its many features, the vessel will offer 55 modern staterooms for passengers and an expanded range of food services and other amenities that will appeal to local residents and tourists alike. “This is an important day in the construction of this northern cruise-ferry,” said Captain Trafford Taylor, BC Ferries’ EVP of New Vessel Construction. “We expect another excellent ship to be delivered to BC Ferries, which will serve our north coast customers for decades to come.” Northern Expedition, along with the MV Northern Adventure, which joined BC Ferries’ fleet last year, will bring a whole new level of service to customers travelling on BC Ferries’ northern routes. The new ships are outfitted with the most modern of passenger amenities and will make visiting the spectacular north coast region of British Columbia an even greater experience than ever before. Northern Expedition will sail from Germany to British Columbia early in 2009 and will begin operating between Port Hardy and Prince Rupert on the Inside Passage route in time for the 2009 tourist season.

After watching the keel-laying video, I have a couple of musings:
1) re the coin: Are they saying that there was no similar coin-protection used in 1969 for the Stena Danica? That "will ensure good fortune" sounds a bit too superstitious for me. But hey, if that's tradition, then so be it.
2) Just wondering if FSG would skip the "lucky coin" if they ever did a newbuild for Croatia (read last Thursday's sports headlines for the context).
Did anyone notice when the video listed the # of cabins, that there is "1 owner cabin". I wonder what that's for? I'm a resident of BC, so I'm kinda the shareholder, aren't I ?
