I wish BC Ferries would keep the whistles in tune, even after refits whistles often are not yet fixed.

I emailed a representative a couple years back about this, as long as it still works as a signalling device, they don’t really care to prioritize them… which is unfortunate. Why have the tri - tone airchimes on their ships if they aren’t going to be maintained?

That's too bad, I have tried emailing about the Queen of New Westminster's bass horn not sounding, I didn't get much in response other than "thanks for letting us know". Seems like the only time it's worked was when someone made a video asking BC Ferries to fix the horn and it got lots of publicity.

Slightly off topic but still deals with "horns" - no idea what is going on, but right now at Departure Bay, the Queen of Cowichan is loading up. Before they started to load, the ship's whistle sounded one long blast. Then someone started to play a tune on bagpipes. Then some people cheered. Now cars are loading on and many of them are honking their horns. What the heck? Makes for a bit of a noisy afternoon.

Someone in our neighbourhood FB group posted about it. The captain is retiring today, and it was their last sailing.

Just something I’ve found interesting for a while now, the only set of whistles that I can remember have had a tail are the Queen of Vancouver’s and I’ve always wondered why. Kahlenberg says you can get a “tail” (the whistle still sounding after the lever or cord has been released) from the length of tubing being too long but I don’t know if she always had that issue…

The Queen of Cowichan's whistle has a very wonky note. Just had a discordant serenade at Departure Bay.

Here are some Coastal Inspiration horns I recorded today. I don't know how it is supposed to sound like but this is what it sounds like right now. Each time the horn sounds slightly different, I think it's quite interesting.

For some reason the Coastal Inspiration is only sailing facing one direction and turning around when departing Swartz Bay so I haven't heard the other end yet.

Here are some Coastal Celebration horns I recorded today. They still sound the horn a lot even when it doesn't do the Active Pass route, and I think the Celebration's Tsawwassen facing end (3rd recording) is sounding correctly!

Spirit of Vancouver Island's Kahlenberg Horn, recorded today. They don't sound this horn very often.

On the BC Ferries Instagram they just posted a video about the Canucks and ferry horns, and I was wondering why the horn recording sounded so familiar. It didn't sound like any active ship, then I remembered a flickr video I saw on the Queen of New Westminster's old horns by Scott, and I am pretty sure it's an exact match. http://instagram.com/p/C6H1rcCP5Pm
www.flickr.com/photos/bcfs/8146636735/I'm assuming they were given permission to use this audio, but it's just funny how I managed to remember the source of the audio (Assuming this actually IS the audio.)
