I always come to the conclusion that BC Ferries just has werid accidents like this...its a curse I think of the pseudo-privatization. A few of my friends in the maritime trade also agree with me. Strange comment. This was the only incident involving loss of passengers' life due to shipboard actions in the fifty three years of BC Ferries operations. Two lives lost out of somewhere near half a billion passengers carried; I'd say that's a pretty decent record of safety.

Its not known if they are at the bottom with the ship, made it to shore then died, or even changed identities... I'm involved with search & rescue here in Oregon and we have a few searches on our books for people that just have disappeared. Those are the ones that keeps you up at night sometimes wondering.

It shows how little the media knows. The Norwegian Jewel was not on route from Victoria headed north. The Jewel was in Victoria Friday then went to Seattle then started a new cruise north Saturday so it was not coming from Victoria.

Thanks very much for posting about this. I will be getting a copy, for sure. October 2015 - I've set myself a reminder to look for it.

Looking forward to your thoughts. Will find a source to order a copy tomorrow. I am a pretty slow reader but I suspect I'll have this one finished pretty quickly by my standards. I am already 45 pages in to it. So far so good. I am finding it riveting. I understand the book will not be available for public sale until the beginning of November. Some items to ponder: - from the (what I think is called the) front peice of the book (page after the title page) - a quote from Joseph Conrad - Being the Master of a ship traditionally brought with it (I am paraphrasing here) all the responsibility for his ship & also its crew, passengers, cargo, etc. Conversely it brought authority as well. He was truly 'the commander' on that ship. Today, however, the Master continues to have that same responsibility while most of that authority has gone. (again, I am paraphrasing) I think anyone who is, or is aspiring to be, a professional mariner needs to read this book.

I was pleasantly surprised to find it there, so I made sure I jumped on the opportunity to grab it. I can't wait to sink my teeth into reading this over the coming weeks (slow reader, but also having a million other things on the go).

Just got my copy as well from Munro's in downtown Victoria. I'm on vacation for most of 2016 so I'm looking forward to getting into it. For anyone in Victoria it seems a few of the independent shops have it in as I called around and was pleasantly surprised at all the "yes" answers I got.

I went to my local Chapters store today, and bought a Jim Thorne photo of Queen of the North, in expo livery at Port Hardy.
The photo was part of a book....you know what I'm trying to say. LOL
I will let you know what I think as I read Mr. Henthorne's book. I'm looking forward to digging in.

I will keep them to myself, for now.

I was in Monroe's Book Store in Victoria today. There are 8 copies of Colin Henthorne's book there. If you want one & you are in/near Victoria you can get one there.

Thanks for sharing that recording. I listened to it this afternoon and really enjoyed it; the questions were thoughtful and answers insightful despite having read his book. It's worth the thirty + minutes to listen to this.

Interestingly enough I have been talking with a girl who actually knows Colin when he worked on the Queen of the North. She knew from when she lived in Port Hardy. Interesting the people you meet.
