Does anyone know what happened to the PEI ferry? Kinda funny looking one. Once the Confederation Bridge was built it was no longer needed.

A little more digging and I think I found what you were looking for. There were two sister ships, the MV Vacationland and the MV Holiday Island. The MV Holiday Island is still running, but for Northumberland Ferries on the Caribou, Nova Scotia - Wood Islands, PEI route. MV Vacationland was sold to the Government of New Brunswick and renamed the MV Fundy Paradise for use on the Blacks Harbour-Grand Manan Island route, but was never put into service due to lack of funding. She was then sold to a company from Quebec City apparently for use on Lake Erie. www.answers.com/topic/mv-vacationlandwww.islandregister.com/post/images/mvholidayisland.jpgwww.islandregister.com/post/images/mvvacationland.jpgThe MV Confederation II is still on the run replaced by the Confederation Bridge, but I believe only during summer months due to the ice that builds up in the strait.

I believe that the ferry terminals are right by each end of the bridge.

When I was there in 1995, there were two ferry routes to PEI. Marine Atlantic operated at least 3 ferries between New Brunswick and PEI - the Vacationland, Holiday Island, and Abegweit. A few hours drive to the east, Northumberland Ferry Line ran between Wood Islands (PEI) and Caribou (NS), operating the MV Confederation and the MV Prince Edward. I think when the Marine Atlantic route was disbanded due to the bridge, Northumberland Ferry Line (NFL) bought the Holiday Island to replace the Prince Edward. I'm not sure if NFL runs in the winter, although I'm pretty sure that the Confederation is capable of breaking ice.

The main reason I think the Confederation may have some ice-breaking capacity (although it apparently does not run in January or February) is that it is smaller length and breadth-wise than the Queen of Tsawwassen but has almost twice the gross tonnage. And the other authority I have from a google search comes from our very own "cascade" on our very own forum just over a year ago: ferriesbc.proboards20.com/index.cgi?board=otherna&action=display&thread=1121758325&page=2Funny how we often answer our own questions:)

Yes one of the ferries definitely has some ice breaking capabilities because before the bridge that is all there was. I do remember the front view of the ferry being odd looking ferry with lines that didn't compare to the BC Ferries. Thanks guys for the info, it was the Abegweit and John Hamilton Gray I was on. I do remember the ferries being different in summer and winter.

The MV fundy paradise is still for sale. I know who owns it and he is trying to sell it.

Poor MV Fundy. Not the prettiest ferries around lol. The older ferries didn't look too bad. The John Hamilton Gray looked ok. But the MV Fundy and MV Abegweit II had faces only a mother could love. I remember my first trip to PEI looking forward to the ferry ride and seeing the Abegweit II approach the docks and thought that it looked like some alien ship lol. The old BC Ferries B and V classes had spoiled me.

Yes, PEI-Nova Scotia ferry service is very much alive. MV Confederation, flagship of the NFL fleet: But not our ship. We rode MV Holiday Island from Caribou NS to Woods Island PEI last month. Not a pretty ship, and certainly not up to BC Ferries standards (lunch choices in her cafeteria were hot dog, chili dog or 'kraut dog). "Do you have hot mustard" I asked. -Nope, just reg'lar, do you want ketchup? - Topside, there was a nice breeze and little to see. Flat Nova Scotia faded behind and flatter PEI hid in the mid morning mist. Most passengers lurked in the dim cafeteria, plugging dollars into the slot machines. And missed PEI's welcome at Woods Island. Red soil, red sand, blue ocean and green grass.

Four days later, we left PEI with a baggage of happy memories. Last look back at the the stupendous Confederation Bridge from Cape Tormentine, New Brunswick.

The MV Confederation always reminds me of a beefed up Queen of Chilliwack. I would love to take the Princess of Acadia from St. John to Digby. A 3 hour cruise hopefully unlike the Minnow. I wonder if the ferry has been upgraded much and the service is closer to the Cat than the Confederation.

Change in ownership of NFL. ================== www.hfxnews.ca:80/index.cfm?sid=48739&sc=89Parent company of Northumberland Ferries and Bay Ferries under new ownership The Canadian Press CHARLOTTETOWN (CP) - Northumberland Ferries and Bay Ferries are under new ownership after the sale of their parent company. The new owners of NFL Holdings Ltd. are Mark MacDonald - who will be the president and CEO - and three current members of the company's senior management team. NFL Holdings Ltd. is the parent company of Bay Ferries Ltd., Northumberland Ferries Ltd., and Bay Ferries Management Ltd. The company had been controlled by more than 30 people - many of them descendants of the families that originally founded Northumberland Ferries in 1939. MacDonald says the company plans to maintain current services and staffing levels. Northumberland Ferries runs ferry service between Wood Island, P.E.I. and Caribou, N.S.; Bay Ferries provides service from Digby and Saint John; and Bay Ferries Management operates high-speed ferry service between the Caribbean islands of Trinidad and Tobago. Doesn't look like anyone has posted this yet. I just tracked down one of the former P.E.I. ferries is now in Newfoundland. The former MV Prince Edward, is now the MV Captain Earl W. Winsor, and runs to Fogo Island. What's interesting is that I found this as a report on a field trip made by the local elementary school. After doing the trip, they published a little online book about the ferry... neat, right? I was just thinking, what an awesome idea for a kids' field-trip. But also, wouldn't it be good if we had something like this for all those old DOT books on the ferry services, so we could access them online like this: www.fica.k12.nf.ca/Grassroots/fogoislandtoday/bookotheferry.htm

Yet another former Caribou-Wood Islands ferry is still in service. The old Prince Nova, built in 1964, now runs between New London, Connecticut and Orient Point at the east end of Long Island, as the Susan Anne. See further www.longislandferry.com/Default.asp

I think the Vacationland is going for scrap. I was looking at ships for sale and saw a familiar ship sitting behind a freighter for sale in India. Here is the link. www.maritimesales.com/OV10.htm

The pictures shown in the link in the last post are taken in Sydney, Nova Scotia. This Vessel is tied up in SydPort. If you look at Google Maps the satelite view of SydPort you will see this ship and the MV Vacationland docked. As well as the MV Atlantic Freighter and other small boats.

That is good to know. Maybe it can still find a use. I rode these "hotdog boats" many times over the years and still feel nostalgic about them.

Regarding the PEI ferry: a small story, but a couple of "tell me more" items: - lack of notice about schedule change (and the reason for not giving notice) - problems loading cars on the ramps thechronicleherald.ca/NovaScotia/1119880.html
