hey I saw the movie "walking tall" last night and the first thing i saw when it started was the Albert J Savoie sailing up howe sound and docking at darrel bay in squamish. The Rock(famous wrestler/actor) was walking around on it too and I also spotted the Garibaldi II at one point too. I know theres a few movies where theres BC Ferries in it, I saw another movie a few years back that had one part in it where a car jumped the ramp onto the Queen of Vancouver and then there was lots of running around on the ship until they got up to the passenger deck and went outside and the ship was moving and somehow they got the gates open on the handrails and one guy fell into the water and and you see him underwater and you see the hull of the Queen of Vancouver. The movie was made in the late 80s maybe really early 90s because berth 5 wasn't fit for the spirits but the Queen of Vancouver was lifted and had the classic dogwood flag and red and blue stripes. But the thing is I don't know what the movie was called at all. Does anybody know? I really want to see it again! ;D

I have seen a few movies with the ferries in them. That one that Ferryman was describing sounds familiar, but I also saw an episode from a television show a few years ago and it was either filmed on the Queen of Vancouver or Esquimalt. First off they showed the loading onto the vehicle deck, I think maybe it was a crime show or something. Then there up moving around on the passenger deck, I remember one part one guy asked how to get off the ship, the crew member tells him about the gangplank may still be open which I would assume would be the passenger walkway ramp. There is some shooting in this scene were they are up top on the upper outside passenger deck shooting at someone and they hit the passenger lounge windows which break, and then they use the fire hose and next thing you know some guy has fallen overboad and you can see him fall into the water. Now I thought that was some tv show, that was on, could be wrong, I dont know if that is the same one you are reffering too. Also other movies, Disturbing Behaviour, Katie Holmes is a co star, about a family that moves to an island, sci fi sort of movie, which is filmed on Bowen Island as they are on the Capilano, the Queen of Naniamo appears in one scence, I think maybe it was also filmed on parts of Galiano too, maybe. Mayne Queen also or maybe Bowen Queen, not sure which one. Although there is also a scene where the guy is racing down to the terminal on Bowen Island on a motorcycle and jump the ramp onto the Mayne Queen where the rest of the friends are waiting. It's funny how the movies use two ships for to make it look like the same one. For example, they jump the ramp to the ferry, you can cleary see it's the Mayne Queen then they are on the car deck scene and it's the Capilano.
Another movie with Tommy Lee Jones, the Tachek appeared in the movie disguised as a WSF, Double Jepardy, that's the name.
WSF have appeard in the second Free Willy movie. The Quinalt was in the movie The Ring, scene where the horse jumps overboard and gets killed by the propeller. Also Scary Movie 3, with a spoof to the Ring movie a short scene of that scene in the ring only this time the Bowen or Mayne Queen. Jennifer Lopez in one movie filmed near Port Townsend, another steel electric ferry in that movie, cant remember the name though. Another Stakeout, again filmed on Bowen Island, either the Mayne Queen or Bowen Queen in that movie, another short scene at the house overlooking the water as either the Queen of Oak Bay or Surrey pass by. That's all I can think of for now.

another movie with a ferry in it is Bird on a Wire. This movie was filmed in the 80's starring Mel Gibson and Goldie Hawn. I believe the ferry is the New West pre lift. It is a Burnaby class vessel shown leaving berth one at tswassen, loaded aft into the berth for the movie.

Free Willy 3. It was either, or may have been all 4 V Class vessels (well, the real ones at least).

Yeah Free Willy 3 was filmed near Active Pass (well, parts of it) and has shots of the Vs going back and fourth, I assume before the S Class were in service??? Or they just missed them...
It was also shot near Horshoe Bay and you see the outline of the Cowichan going to Langdale (by the outline I assume it was before the Surrey took over)...

(Scene) Mr. Magoo is on his boat he thinks fog is rolling in but it is two V Class Ships Queen of Vancouver in the back and Queen of Esquimalt in the front. look pretty new and shiny for those two boats in 1998 hmm maybe they gave them a paint job before that scene)A man and woman are on the Esquimalt the woman opens a side gate kicks the man off the boat he holds on to the gate Mr. Magoo casts out his line the hook gets caught in the guys pants he falls into the water the guys pants slip off and Mr. Magoo catches them then the guy gets out a dagger and trys to kill him. He moves away to a dock gets on the back of a stern wheeler and the man gets caught in the wheel of the stern wheeler then goes to another scene. Those are the two ships Vancouver and Esquimalt

The Albert J Savoie was already owned by Rainy River Logging for this flick. Capt. John Horn had to take the Savoie back and forth between Britania Beach and Squamish 14 times (including the film crew following in a helicopter) just for that one opening shot! Ashley Judd starred in a movie called "Double Jeopardy" (1999) and she drives a car off the end of a BC Ferry. There was a fair amount of footage on the Ferry in this movie.Good movie also.

Tommy Lee Jones was also in the movie Double Jepardy and they did show him walking aroung upstairs in the passenger lounge. It looked to me like the ship they used had a snack bar on it as he was holding a cup of coffee it looked like. Although if there was they never showed it. Or just made you think there was one. It was the Tachek they used in that movie renamed for the movie the Puget Islander. I have one of the BC Ferries newsletters December 98 edition. My aunt works at Tsawwassen so she got all the newsletters for me.
Deas Dock Paint Department did the repainting of the Tachek, and there was a crew who were assigned to the Tachek for 10 days while shooting.
For anyone else who has seen the movie can you tell me where the dock was they used when they were driving on the Tachek in that movie??? Looked like maybe one of the docks in Howe Sound.

The scene was in Howe Sound. The dock was located at Porteau Cove south of Squamish.

That Double Jeopardy Movie looks pretty interesting but in one pic with the car jumping of the ferry the boat is going slow and then at another angle you see the ferry going fast oh well, there sure is alot more movies with BCF than i ever thought!

Yes, the Tachek was disguised as a Washington State Ferry. She was called the Puget Sound Islander in the movie.

An early ferry film (shot in 1969) is "Five Easy Pieces" .. this monumental Jack Nicholson movie has two lengthy scenes on small BC Ferries.
I can't identify the boats or their docks. The Brentwood-Mill Bay route is one possibility; Swartz Bay-Fulford is another. The scenes represent Puget Sound, but the cars all have BC's blue 69-70 license plates (**see note), and the scenery is generic winter BC island country.
**note: In the second ferry scene, Susan Anspach is driving an elderly Volvo with Washington plates, but a CAA sticker is clearly visible on her windshield.
Any enthusiasts who have the DVD: look at the ferry scenes at the end of chapter stop 16; then a couple of chapters later. There are at least two open-deck boats used. Perhaps the scenery will be familiar to some.

It was the Tachek, and hollywood paid for both paint jobs. I know the Captain who worked on the film, and he said that the catering was fantastic.

For really, really old guys only: anyone remember "Tidewater Tramp"?
It was a CBC-TV series in the early 1960's, aimed at after-school kids. As a 10 to 13-yr old, I thought it was great.
The setting was Northland Navigation's MV Canadian Prince. The weekly adventures took us city kids to Alert Bay, Kitimat, Bella Bella, Namu, Ocean Falls and Prince Rupert.
Sure, they shot most of it on cardboard sets in the Georgia Street studio .. but they gave kids like me a taste for salt water BC. Sort of a precurser to The Beachcombers, I guess.
A brave effort, and a d*m sight better than Baywatch.

The scene from Double Jeopardy was filmed at the Porteau Cove single vehicle ramp at Porteau Cove Provincial Park.
This ramp is no longer owned or maintained by BC Ferries, it was turned over to the Ministry of Transportation & Highways when BC Ferries became a private operation.
