Photos of the Celebrity Millennium @ Nanaimo today. I checked siitech.com this morning to see where she was anchored, and so I decided that Jack Point park would be a good place to ship-spot. ------------------------ - view from just-south of the Duke Point ferry terminal. Changing angles to view the ship, as I walked closer up the point. (for this last pic, I'm finally at the rocks at the tip of Jack Point) I had to sneak the lovely Quinsam into a photo Hotel-row, above the lifeboats. Tender-boat leaving for shore at Nanaimo. The boats left from the ship's port-side where there is a fold-down "Murphy wharf" on the side of the ship. I knew that from last time I saw this ship at Nanaimo. But I couldn't swim far enough today to get a shot of that side. ;D Progression of pictures of a tender-boat How's that for contrasting sizes?

Get some photos of it, then post them here, Karl!
Mike, is that the Murphy door near the bow, or is that something different? ALSO, are the tenders also used as lifeboats? I've heard that they can be, and both the tenders and the inflatables are used.

Karl are you gonna be cruising through the Panama Canal? Because earlier you said it was a west coast departure and I think you said that you were ending up in Ft. Lauderdale. Or is it just that you are flying to Florida from Seattle?

I've heard that they can be, and both the tenders and the inflatables are used. I've just assumed that the little boats have dual purpose, but I don't know that for sure. - the photos below show that the tender is definitely a different boat from the lifeboat. Here are my photos from 2009 for what I call the "Murphy wharf": (same ship, by the way) The tender-boats on the Celebrity Millennium And here's the wharf that folds-out like a Murphy-bed:

It's a Panama Canal cruise from Seattle to Fort Lauderdale then we fly home from Florida! The Infinity is doing the Alaska run and is on her last run right now. We will see her in Victoria Thursday night when we leave on the Clipper then we will board her in Seattle Friday! It's sort of a repositioning cruise too! Most of the ships are or will be heading south!

The lifeboats proper can be used in much rougher sea states and are self-righting. Hence the lack of glass, rounded hull shape so waves can roll right over, and are much more water tight. The fold down murphy bed dock has become more common on ships and yachts. It gives you a more secure and lower to the water point, to board tenders. In the case of yachts it is a great place to access water toys. Some are quite large now and refered to as floating beaches.

I am currently in the Internet Cafe on the Infinity still heading south from our last port in Mexico bound for Costa Rica! The first few days out of Seattle were interesting with the Pacific Ocean swells the ship was rocking and rolling quite a bit! The Infinity is a beautiful ship. We got upgraded to a Balcony as we have connections on the ship which as been cool. We met the Millenium one of the Infinity's sister ships in San Diego and she has been sailing with us since then as she is also doing the Panama cruise from San Diego so she has been in every port with us so far. Anyways looks for photos when I get back! Signing off from the Infinty!! Bye for Now as the Captain says, lol!

Wow the old girl is looking rather forlorn. Last I saw her was when she was in Norfolk and she looked a bit unkempt. If the economy was different I think it would still be a wonderful addition to Nauticus Museum in Norfolk as a floating hotel/conference/visitors centre - a la Queen Mary. Unless some major flush with cash donors came on board there is no way it could be handled. One idea also "floated" was for Newport News Shipyard to purchase her and use it as offices, accomodatings for overnight visitors, hotel and conference centre. This idea I know was "scuttled" due to expense and need to build another pier to house her and security concerns with having a semi-public facility on site. You would think they could hide a hundred million in one of the aircraft carrier or Virginia Class Subs budgets quite easily and the Navy would never notice.

Wow, Big U. These were the glory days of trans-atlantic voyages. One of the most powerful (and beautiful, if I can say this...) power plants ever installed in a passenger ship; 248,000 HP from steam turbines. Her Eastbound trans-Atlantic record still stands, at 35.59kts average speed.
From what I understand, the Big U conservation society recently received a massive private donation, that has allowed them to buy 20 months of storage while they raise the 3 million to buy the ship from NCL.

The carrier the United States was cancelled after the keel was laid and the steam turbine engines were already ordered and being built. A large revolt happened within the Navy when that happened, and some resignations resulted.
A largely political move followed that was designed to placate the upset Navy, the Newport News Shipyard and save jobs that were lost. The SS United States fast cruise liner resulted and was built in the same slipway the cancelled carrier had been laid down. Famously there was no wood used in the whole ship for fire resistance, all the fixtures were built to be easily removed for conversion to troop carrier, and the interior sleek and somewhat spartan "modern" design. The Navy ended up paying for about three quarters of the cost of the ship (about half of what the carrier would have cost). During the period itself the details of the ship was kept very hush hush.
Beyond the above facts, the tour guides on the Newport News Harbour Cruises would have all sorts of stories based on rumour and heresay that I am not sure can be backed up by facts. From the water the ship looked like it was moving even when tied up, and capable of fast speeds just by its shape and naval architecture.

She's not the prettiest ship, due to all the weird shaping on the 3 or 4 decks below the funnels, but I think it would be cool if Philly could make her into a giant tourist attraction.

Norwegian Pearl in Nanaimo, at the new cruise-ship terminal (small, but still cost $22 million for a facility which will be used 4 times this year). - from May 7, 2011: photos taken by me, from my colleague's boat. --------------- -------------- And the naked dock, from a couple of weeks ago. =========== (I'll post some more in the next few days, including ones with ferries in the same frame)

Why build a cruise terminal if Nanaimo only has like 4 ships a year?? I can see if it was a busy terminal but Nanaimo, lol! Some people even think cruises going to Nanaimo is weird. But still cool photos! Norwegian Pearl is one ship I want to cruise on!
