Some of the videos your panning too fast and don't have a stop and start to the pan. This will really help make the video look better. Would you rather have a video with fast panning, or no video at all? We must appreciate what we have and give credit where credit is due... We should be glad we have someone so dedicated, so committed, so mentally unhinged enough to go around everywhere chasing ferries to make videos of them . As us wise ferry gurus say: All good things come to an end. Will we ever get over the sting of losing on old friend...? Who knows. But at least we have the video and visual reminders now to remember her. Chris, I'm not really sure what I should say... I'm not a cameraman and I'm not a director or a producer, and I'm surely not Statler and Waldorf. I'll borrow a page from railway lore and say that all I can say is that your work on this video has been well done in every way, and all the time we spent on the Queen of Tsawwassen was time well spent to say the least.

I will not put it on a website for everyone to download. I don't trust a certain someone enough to be allowed a copy, due to the fact that they're so critical about everything, and might modify it to take their own credit for.
It will be put on a DVD, which will only be offered to selected members.

My daughter says "that was a nice movies" (she made me play it twice). Awesome job Chris! The music is great and you got footage of all parts of the ferries. I liked the part where the engine seems to be dancing to the music;)

Nice work on the preview Chris. You've got some great footage. I'm working on a bit of a preview right now with the footage I've got from the last sailings. I got the idea to put the ships whistle at the end yesterday...So you can imagine me thinking right now, "He had my idea before me!"

Wow! I really enjoyed watching that, Chris. I liked the simple things, like the concept of showing propeller-wash footage just after you showed the engine drive-shaft.
Question: the opening sequence looked like an old home-movie. Was that the YouTube quality-issue that you mentioned?
To me it had the look of vintage 1970's home movie camera footage; and I liked that effect. I thought it might have been an old home movie that you got hold of, until I saw the mating-slugs on the funnel. ;D

That looked great. The clips are well matched to each other, like Flugel Horn has mentioned above. I particularly liked the telegraph shot, and then it cut to the engine control. I know the music won't necessarily be the same on the full version, but I really liked that song, too. I think my only suggestion, is kind of what you already mentioned. I would like to hear the telegraph in that shot, and I think having the rings of the bell from her decommissioning audible would be good. Perhaps you could lower the level of the music for those shots, and let the video's sound take over? I'm also curious what software you're using. Adobe Premiere? Pinnacle? Again, great job. Definitely one of the better ship tributes I've seen. (and this is only the preview! ;D )

If you think I would modify it and say it was my own. read it here in writing, I won't. I can also put up access control for the HD version to limit who gets access to it and all. As for the panning, etc I am trying to help make the video as good as possible. I thought comments where wanted?

Mac, don't get me wrong. I appreciate your offer, and will consider it. But I'll let you know when the time comes if I'll require assistance.
I agree with you, Nick. I plan to do all of what you mentioned. The program I used to edit it, was Pinnacle.
Cheers

Amazing video Chris. An appropriate song except for when I saw the cafeteria colours! Anyways, I really like the footage of the engine room. I agree with Nick about the telegraph sounds too. I look forward to the rest of it!

Chris the video is excellent, just those two scenes. I think there is a technic for consistant panning like that. Google it. Oh I have an idea to make the panning of those two shots work, slow it down and do a fake flash/still photo effect that would really ehance it. Other then that an excellent video. Also maybe do slow motion of the bell being range to enhance the emotional moment. Bring tears to our eyes. Yes I am a perfectionist. --------- [moderator edit to make post more perfect by changing "Christ" to "Chris". I assume the intent was to communicate with the video creator, not to refer to a Nazarene]

Some perfectly choreographed movements in a bitter-sweet symphony:
I keep watching the video over and over and it's amazing at how many points the words seem to perfectly match the images in the video.
At the beginning, the words Let us die young or let us live forever are heard while looking down on the Tsawwassen's cresting bow wave.
Next, the words We dont have the power but we never say never... Can you imagine when this race is won Turn our golden faces into the sun Seem to evoke just the right thought while watching her bow doors opening. What else does the opening of a door usually imply but a change or an ending in something.
And the fact that the telegraphs signalling and the throttles being moved end up in the instrumental portion makes it seem like the music and the video are actually being controlled by the engine controls.
While watching the rockerheads on the pistons, the words perfectly match up: Some are like water, some are like the heat Some are a melody and some are the beat All those elements are associated with the engines, especially the melody and the beat that they had.
And while watching the engine room assistant creep along the shaft way over the spinning propeller shaft, the song says Its so hard to get old without a cause I don’t want to perish like a fading horse It just seems to match up with the notion that the Queen of Tsawwassen is old without a cause and ready to fade away, with the shafts ceasing to spin and the engineers walking up that shaft way for the last time and leaving a silent engine room behind them.
Hearing the words So many adventures couldn’t happen today So many songs we forgot to play While watching the prop-wash at the stern and that fish boat that is way too close, show us the action of the ship from the outside and, as going astern always means you end up going away from something, it feels like we are leaving something behind among all those missed adventures.
The main cardeck shot, looking through the complex angles of the support columns under the platforms, seems to almost move in slow motion, while the song lingers on the word Forever.
And, finally, the quick change of scene to the bell-ringing occurs precisely at the same instant as a heavy drum-beat and guitar riff. The change comes so suddenly, it seems as if that bell is producing the beat and the suddenness of this leap to a new scene comes with a sharpness that almost startles you as you watch it: no transitions or faders, just a quick snap and an unexpected change that takes a moment to realize (blink your eyes and you'd miss it).
This song seems to fit so well in the video, and the tone of it is just melancholy enough to make you feel a deep pang of sadness, while all the words seem to focus on thoughts of things never completed or left behind because we really don't have the power to live forever.

Mill Bay, you seemed to be able to spell the structure of the video perfectly. I had to laugh though, because I actually just simply threw it together, without paying much attention to the lyrics of the song, but only paying attention to the beat. So I find it really interesting alot of the clips matched up with the song in more ways than one. So I guess the trick to these videos, is just follow your gut feeling, and let the video do all of the work.

So I guess the trick to these videos, is just follow your gut feeling, and let the video do all of the work. After you watch it enough times... lol. Actually, most of those things I noticed from the first viewing of the video. I noticed the same thing in that video I posted about the Britannic. It's amazing how many times that happens though... you can work on something for weeks and it never comes together and then, you just get blinding flash and try something on a whim and it fits perfectly. It also depends on what it triggers in the mind and memories of the viewer as well: that can take you to a lot places, but words especially seem to have a very tangible power to them. So, there you go, sometimes honest guesswork is more precise then precision craftsmanship. Keep making videos like that and I'm sure they'll be in popular demand. Of course, if they are all tribute videos similar to this one, you might more likely have all of us going around red-eyed for a long time to come.

Chris:
at 1:08 of the video, as the bow-doors are opening as she approaches Earls Cove, you can see a ship in the next-door original berth.
Was this the Bowen Queen? I thought it was the Powell River Queen, but I'm assuming it was the Bowen, being stored at E-Cove.

Mr. Horn, sir. The bow doors were actually opening as we were approaching Village Bay, Mayne Island. The vessel you see there, is the Mayne Queen. That was the day that Alex, Mill Bay and Myself did the milk run to Long Harbour, and then went from Long Harbour to Mayne Island to take the Mayne Queen to Swartz Bay. I'm really starting to miss sailing through the Gulf Islands on the Queen of Tsawwassen.

Just thought I would chime in here and echo everyone else's praise of your most excellent video tribute. Well done! I'm glad I took the chance to ride on her one more time this year.

Just though of an idea. With people's permision use some varies photos to add even more emotion to the video (people laughing, having a good time, the "oops I did something funny" that would really help bring some tears to everyones eyes.

I thought it was the Powell River Queen, but I'm assuming it was the Bowen, being stored at E-Cove. Just a little tidbit, BCF cant store vessels in the old berth because they need to use it when the tide is very low as the new berths ramp doesn't extend down far enough. Chris, it looks great, I really like it. What are you using to edit your footage? I've only ever used adobe premier, and that's really expensive. Your doing a great job, keep it up. Cheers,

I thought I'd give an update on my Tsawwassen Tribute Video. At current, the preview is finished and hopefully will be up on YouTube within the next few days for your viewing. Soon I will be starting work on the big picture. I don't know when though.

Love the video of her she will be misted. I didn't know that we still had any fireboats left around that would do the "spray-the-retiree" send-off thing ... or did you mean MISSED??

it was a good video... sad to see the old girl go, but alas, she stood in the way of "progress"
It was interesting that there was a ceremony for the removal of the current flag. Would have been nice to see the Original BCF Flag flown on her last sailing, just as a little tribute.
