Ok as some as you guys know, I'm making tribute videos for our retiring vessels. The thing is, I'd like to make these videos something worth keeping for years to come. So I need your help to make that happen.
What I need help with is finding music to go along with the video. I thought it would be pretty boring if I had the same song play over and over again for each ship. So I'm looking for specific songs for specific ships, and you must provide a link or an audio clip to the song. Youtube is a great tool to use. Tell me why you think the song(s) is worth using.
I'm also looking for photos and/or video of these ships pre 2003 Privatization.
If I use any songs you suggest, or photos/video you donate, you'll recieve a free copy of this video on DVD.
Songs I have my eye on so far is:
"Pink Floyd - The Violent Sequence". This song was actually the inspiration of "Us and Them" in the album, "Dark Side of the Moon". It's pretty mellow, yet somewhat depressing to listen to. The Pianist who did this song, Richard Wright, actually died just a couple of weeks ago unfortunately.
"Pink Floyd - Time". Can you tell I'm a fan of the 'Floyd? I wouldn't use the first 2 and a half minutes of this song, just because it's kind of a long drawn out part that isn't too interesting.
This song is a little more recent, yet it's a cover of a song from the 80's. "Youth Group - Forever Young".
OK let's see what you've got!
The the song you choose

That "Forever Young" song is used in a tourism advertisement for New Zealand. The ads are very well done, and the song would be a good fit to a tribute video, I think.
Great idea, Chris.

Song ideas: ============= "It's over" by Prism This might be just what you're looking for, Chris. - song by a west-coast Canadian band from the 1970's. Nothing like a Vancouver band. - theme is "its' over" - melancholy sound, simple sound - mournful lead vocal. - a good ship-tribute song. Think of it as the old ship singing to you. (song is used in this YouTube video to pay tribute to deceased lead-singer of Prism, Ron Tabak, who tied way too soon.....) ================ Some songs with words / titles that play-off on a ferry theme: "Killer Queen" by Queen - the song refers to "Khrushchev & Kennedy", re the early '60's era, just when some of our Queen ferries were new. - The "queen" word in the song title is a ferry tie-in too. ------------------------- "Don't pay the ferry-man" by Chris DeBurgh - sappy 80's but the ferry-theme is clear...even if it's a riverboat. ------------------------ "Ferry 'cross the Mersey" by Gerry and the Pacemakers - Obvious ferry boat theme. Simple song that also is from the 1960's when our BC Ferries were new. ----------------------- "Another one bites the dust" by Queen Irreverent use of the song to mark the retirement of the old ferries. ------------------ "In my Life" by The Beatles: - a some of reminiscing of days and places from the past, a fitting theme for a video on old ships. "...though some have changed. Some forever, not for better...." -------------------------- "Ticket to Ride" by The Beatles - a fun, early-Beatles song, with a transportation theme. ------------------------------- "Undun" by The Guess Who: '- Song to a "she" has come apart and it's too late to do anything to change that now.... - again, the song is from the '60's when the ships were new. ---------------------------

As long as it's not Forever Young by Rod Stewart. Although that is one of his better songs, it would be too jaunty for a tribute song, and I find most of his other songs irritating so I wouldn't want that grudge to mar my appreciation of any tribute videos. Have you considered using 'Comfortably Numb'...? You could pull a lot of parallel sentiments out of the lyrics with lines such "a distant ship's smoke on the horizon", and "When I was a child I caught a fleeting glimpse / Out of the corner of my eye / I turned to look but it was gone." These thoughts really match up with the way some of us probably feel about the Tsawwassen's sudden, and even baffling, retirement, as well as the feeling some of those who never experienced a trip on board are feeling, like we only caught a fleeting glimpse of her before she suddenly disappeared. You might also want to check out Dougie McLeans Ready for the StormThere's a couple of versions on Youtube.

I might have some pictures on film for you but I don't know how to put them on the computer in high quality. When I scan them they come out fuzzy and have poor colours. Could I take the negatives to a picture store and have them made digital. Any help is appreciated.

You can't use copyrighted music on a video your selling or for public display, unless you license the music. if you send me the edited video (or Scott) either of us can write some custom music for your videos and it won't cause you any legal issues.

I couldn't sleep last night, so I combed my music collection in search of a suitable song or two. Here's what I came up with: Great Big Sea - Own True WayI think the lines "We came, we saw / we conquered and crumbled / in our own true way" reinforce what kind of impact these ships have had on the people of coastal British Columbia. Kansas - Dust in the WindA good song with a good instrumental portion. "Everything is dust in the wind". Styx - Come Sail AwayAbout parting ways for another chapter in life. Pretty fitting for the sendoff of our old ferries, I think. U2 - Beautiful DayIt's been used for tributes many times, but it's a classic. Alan Parson's Project - Old and WiseI like the lines "You've always shared my darkest hours / I'll miss you when you go". So anyway, my suggestions. BTW, I don't think it counts as copyright infringement if the person is not displaying it publicly or is making a profit. I don't think Chris intends to sell these for a profit, just to make the money he spends on DVDs and such back.

Grand Funk Railroad - "I'm Your Captain" Didn't that band used to be called Grand Funk Pacific? ;D After that they morphed into a Rap Group and changed the name to GJT (kinda like KFC wanted to hide the word fried). It stands for Grand Junk in the Trunk since they are older and have gained some weight. ;D

Thank you all for the suggestions. I'm impressed. I'll play around with those songs, and then I'll let you know which was used. More suggestions will of course be welcomed though. I never said anything about selling the video, especially for profit. These videos are litterally costing me hundreds of dollars already just for equipment, software, and driving out to get the footage and photos. None of them are even anywhere near being complete yet. I'd have to sell dozens of videos at a rediculous price before I'd even be able to cover the cost. I of course wouldn't mind recieving at least something in return for the video, so instead I'll be accepting various forms of Ferry memorabilia to add to my collection . Cheers

Neil Young "Long May You Run" even though it is about a car not a ferry, lol! I still like the song.
The one Newflyer mentioned Coldplay "Fix You" was also used as a tribute to the WestJet 737-200's when they were retired and is also a good song. This is that version!

After I read the first sentence of this thread, one song immediately and weirdly jumped into my head.
I Will Remember you by Sarah McLachlan. It's kinda sappy and sad and stuff, but I think it would fit pretty well in a montage, if you had a few different songs playing throughout a video for a certain ferry. I'm not even sure why I thought of it...must have seen it in a commercial recently or something.

It is used in SPCA advertisements, and also a few of those 'starving children in third world countries'. I would think that the Alzheimers Society should consider licencing it too!

I would think that the Alzheimers Society should consider licencing it too! I'd like to speak out and say that joke was in poor taste. That's a horrible disease that causes lots of emotional-pain to spouses, children & grandchildren, etc. I do understand that the joke was meant in fun.

One more song I like!
Christopher Cross "Sailing" relaxing song that makes me think about being out on the water and sailing whether on a ferry or sailboat.

Ok, here's a preview of the videos. I bought a new video editing program to edit this video, so I'm still learning how to use it, seeming it's a little more advanced from what I'm used to. Most of these clips are alot longer, escpecially the ones in the engine room and wheelhouse. Youtube also reduced the quality of the video, so you'll have to bear with me on that one.
The song used in the video was only chosen for the preview. I'm still reviewing suggested songs, and will be trying to build the bigger videos with certain songs. But I'm also questioning how much music I'll have now, seeming the Tsawwassen was so full of character, she made all sorts of different noises that everyone loved to hear. I captured alot of those sounds, and will have to work at having those sounds available in the final video.
Enjoy.

Some of the videos your panning too fast and don't have a stop and start to the pan. This will really help make the video look better.
With the done video, you should output a high quality 720p and we can just download it from a website. Sure it will be like 2GB/video, but we can get the space to host it for download (I would even be willing to host it for download on my server with a 100mbit connection). That would make distribuation the easiest.
