re the picture of her rear, with the right-stern door open:
- Does anyone have any idea what the stacked material is, that is shown in the car-deck?

What do you mean by that? They could have done the same paint job as the QOPR

What I meant was that because the Sonia is essentially a floating rectangular box, almost any bow is going to be lacking a certain background to the look of the shape of bow added.

I hope it was greeted with more fanfare than what is shown in the pictures... Quite unfortunately I was not exaggerating when I quoted the number of the droves of people of our province who demonstrated pride in their ferry fleet - there were literally none at the beach, except for one nice older couple who seemed in conversation to realize the significance of this event. I mentioned John H's site, that links to here quite easily, so I must commend them here for being the only people at beach-level other than myself to show-up; thanks for giving a darn.

Finally I am back. Not that I was anywhere but the one time I wanted to be online our power goes out for 3 nights and cable we just got back tonight which is why I havent been online since Thursday. Awesome pics by the way. I saw the Sonia today sitting by the drydock. I never saw here arrive yesterday as I had to work in the afternoon but I zipped by the drydock on my break and I saw her there. Well in the dark but today I saw her for the first time. Glad to see she made it here. I'll have to keep an eye on the progress while she is here in Victoria!

re the picture of her rear, with the right-stern door open: - Does anyone have any idea what the stacked material is, that is shown in the car-deck? Styrofoam insulation. There's a glut of it in Europe, while the building boom has exhausted the supplies in North America. Another example of the advantages of a more independent ferry corporation - they're able to generate profits in imaginative ways such as this.

How exactly would our ferry system end up passing up such an opprotunity simply becuase it's a crown corp, where the only substantial difference, to me atleast, seems to be adherence to public scrutiny?

Actually, after watching CTV News this evening, they showed the stacked material on the car deck. Turns out it's not styrofoam, or even insulation for that matter. It's the mattresses from the staterooms. They said, normally BC Ferries would normally donate them to charity, but instead they're going to the dump, because they have "bed bugs...". Other footage included the ripping up of the white spotted blue carpet, and the smashing of the wood panelings on the wall with a sledge hammer. For those of you who hate the large circular windows below the bridge at the bow, those windows won't be going anywhere anytime soon, because that's where the First class staterooms are. BC Ferries also wants to try and install a Bar, if they can get a license to serve alcohol. Anyway, luckily Global BC showed similar footage minutes later, and by that time I had my VCR recording. So, I'll be posting all the footage from the News, in the next hour or so.

I was going to 'fess up that I was joking about the styrofoam, and I was going to suggest it was a shipment of mattresses. Turns out as Ferry-Chaser-man said, they are.
Most people seem to believe that public corporations work smarter, are more imaginative, and are faster on their feet than crown corporations. So my bogus act of free enterprise would be more consistent with a more privatized ferry corporation.
But before this gets too carried away, and speaking as someone who now works for a private company that used to be part of a crown corporation, I'm strongly against such privatizations. As are virtually everyone I work with.
I wonder about the four fancy staterooms just under the bridge. British Columbians have some resistance to having a class society. Would BCF try, or be able to get away with, selling the best views on the passenger portion of the ship to 8 people per run? I can't see that going over well.
Tonight I saw three different stories about the ship on tv. There is a covered bar at the stern that BCF proposes to turn into a bbq operation. The ship can do over 20kts. There is walking space between the control consoles and the big front windows of the bridge. Individual crew cabins, with a few set up for two during peak periods.
Apparently the ship is cosmetically quite dirty, and most of the "soft" stuff has to be torn out.
They said the captain has been on the ship for three months. Really?

For those of you who do not have access to watching BC News on TV, or who haven't had power for a while. Here's two parts from the news, about the Northern Adventures arrival. The first is from Monday, when she first arrived, and the second part is from tonight, with an interior tour.

re the BCTV news report, I liked the part at the end where Squire Barnes asks about the Sunshine-Breakfast.
(someone using the name "Squire Barnes" answered one of our ferry-quizes a few months ago....but I think the name was just a gag)

Thanks Chris!! I don't get home in time from my commute to watch so that was great!
I fail to see how D. Hahn thinks that naming SONIA "The Spirit of Hartley Bay" would hurt them [BCFS] in the long run. Would anyone not sail on a ship because of they didn't like the name? Especially one with all those yummy amenities?

Glad you guys liked the first. Here's one more, this time from A-Channel News, with a bit more info. It even shows the cardeck for a few seconds, and you can see a something like a galley deck that goes up and around the bow.

I watched nearly the same thing on Global yesterday evening and found out that those Port Holes at the front are there, they're for the luxery suites, in other words the very nice state rooms with a heaad on view. Hopefully one of those if not all four are converted into a lounge

Thank you, Chris. - What a great use of the reasoning for Time Magazine's person of the year recently being named as us, because of user-generated media, to give easy and free access on the internet to, in our case, ferry related news from television.

Typical of our sloppy broadcast journalism in this province. I wonder how Captain Guy Kendall, liked being referred to as Kendall Guy?

It was. 2 of the 3 stations couldn't even get his name right. How would they like us to call them Parson Toni and Keith Baldguy?
