While I agree naming the ferry "Gitk'a'ata" would be a nice gesture and that in many cases a name doesn't make too much difference once it grows on you, don't you think a ferry on such a popular route should have a "good" name?
The "Queen of the North" was a really nice name. Easy to remember, easy to pronounce, and quite appropriate for its location. I just can't imagine a tourist from California telling his friend about the beautiful ferry ride he had on the "Gitk'a'ata" during his trip to the Queen Charlottes. Maybe I'm putting too much importance into the name of a ship... just a thought.

What would you all think if BC Ferries were to designate the new ship (Hartley Bay/Gitk'a'ata) as the flagship of the fleet? Good Idea! Re-christen the ship "Hartley Bay/Gitk'a'ta", written across the flanks (I'm serious) so everyone can be happy and decide for themselves. Diplomacy at work. Ahhhhhhh!! Hmmm... The Sonia could definitely be the flagship. It's predecessor was, albeit partly on route placement, and its looks. We can forgive maybe if the Sonia is on route placement. Harangue me if you will, but I prefer the Sonia to the Spirits in terms of appearance, just because it doesn't look quite so intimidating, and looks more like a "ship" than a "ferry." *Ahem*

I would say it would go as follows
former M.V. Sonia=Spirit of Hartley Bay
Queen of Prince Rupert replacement=Queen Charlotte Queen
Queen of Chilliwack replacement=Spirit of the Discovery Coast

Why can't the names contain Queen, Spirit or Coastal? Is that the word from above or something?
I really like the suggestion "Spirit of the North" or "Spirit of the North Coast"

Whatever name they choose. It should resemble the North.
Suitable names would be something like this... Spirit of the North for the QPR Replacement Spirit of the Queen Charlottes for the Sonia, Spirit of Hartley Bay/Discovery Coast for the Chilliwack Replacement.
But as one suggested they Could Choose Northern as the name they use such as... Northern Explorer for the QPR Replacement, Northern Discovery for the Chilliwack Replacement, The Sonia Would be Spirit of Hartley Bay.

They already have the name picked for the Sonia they are just keeping it secret till she arrives here according to an article about her in the Times Colonist.

They names won't contain spirit of coastal because those indiacte the class of ship. ie Spirit is "S" clas for the SOVI and SOBC, and Coastal is for the "Super C" class.

BC Ferries has previously announced "Queen of" and "Spirit of" are dead, I've been slightly confused why we continue to discuss their use?

I thought I heard that somewhere. So I guess the Sonia will have a completely new and unique name.
If the "Spirit of" is dead, I suppose that means there are no plans to build anymore? Am I wrong?

I would wager that we'll never see any new single ended ferries on the south coast. So, no sisters for the Spirits.
And although the public actually owns the ferries, BC Ferries doesn't seem interested in our input in naming them. If they were to ask, I think the 'Queen' moniker would still be pretty popular.

At this stage of vesel replacements, it's really hard to say if we'll be seeing a full fleet of double ended vessels, with the exception of the Northern Vessels. With looking at the design of the Super C Class models, it looks like quite the mixed bag of designs to me. I of course see the C-Class in it, but I see a mix of the Spirit and Pacificat design in it as well. The Spirit design for the two different passenger decks, and the Pacificat design for the location of the bridge. Anyways, the impression that I've got, is that the single enders handle in Active Pass, better than the double enders, as they don't have to slow down as much. For the names of the new vessels, I don't think they had that contest for the Super C names to just be for the Super C's. I think BC Ferries was looking at that contest for some ideas for new names for other Classes of vessels as well. I suppose it will be only 8 more days until we find out the new name of the Sonia, and what the theme for the prefix will probably be as well.

It's true! They aren't interested in what the public has to say.
When they held the contest to name the Super-C's, they didn't use any of the entrants suggestions, but instead the advisory board combined elements from different entries.
Did anybody win the prizes that were up for grabs?

There are currently 2 threads on "Northern Vessel Names". This old thread here, which was mainly speculation of the upcoming announcement, and a new thread which discusses the resulting announcement.
In the interests of avoiding 2 parallel discussions on the same topic, with different persons unaware of the other thread, this old thread here is now locked.
The current, open thread is on the "BC Ferries News" section, and is called "Northern Vessel Names are...". That new thread name captures the uniqueness and our commitment to showcase the tremendous opportunities for discussion and debate that these new names have to offer.
