A little bit of rain won't stop me! It's part of life on coast. (eek I sound like David Hahn!)

Me either. See you all at Tim Horton's at 2:30pm - In case you don't see me there at 2:30 then don't wait for me, I'd be at Allied Shipyard already in that case.

I checked with Allied, and the launch is on for sometime between 2:30 and 3, depending on the highest water.

although I was not there I am guessing that they didn't have to worry about low water (raining so hard)

Official News Release HereLooks like BC Ferries hasn't changed the way they name their ships. The John Atlantic Burr AKA Hull 259 is now the... M.V. Kuper......Good thing they chose a K Class Name EDIT: Furthermore She's Going to be the Ship on the Chemainus-Thetis-Kuper Route Not just a Relief Vessel

It's funny because we were commenting on how they hadn't named the ship, but it had the name on it, but only where we did not see it.

The Launch of the "Kuper", was spectacular. Karl and I met up with Jordan around 2:45, at the Tim Hortons as planned. I phoned Graham to see where he was, sure enough he was already at the dyke that is across from the launch. He told me they were just cutting the supports holding it on the launch, so we all jumped into my car, and we raced to the scene. Luckily I found a spot to park right at the entrance to the dyke, just as we said hello to Graham, the whistle went off, signalling she's going to launch. Click on the picture below, to watch her hit the water. Here's some more pics. Also, on a side note..... It turns out P. Keenleyside from the yahoo forum happened to be at the launch, and was standing almost directly behind us when the launch happened. Too bad we never noticed him! Have a look at his rendition of the launch, and he too also has a neat video posted, just look for the link on this page. modena.intergate.ca/personal/pl8s/BCF/New_Fy/

Nice little ferry. Clean lines. Simple. And thanks to those who chronicled the launch for us.
But why in service to Thetis and Kuper? According to BC Ferries own stats, Thetis has the second lowest capacity utilization of any southern island, and among the fewest extra trips (3). It would seem to have had just about the lowest priority for a bigger ferry. Another island, which I won't name because people might think it's 'sour grapes', had over 300 extra trips, higher utilization, and sometimes two to three sailing waits in the summer. Even a slightly larger ferry would help. Also, BC Ferries had originally said the new boat was going to be a relief vessel, and that they were going to ditch the practise of naming boats after islands, since they end up getting moved around. So I'm curious about the placement, and the change of heart on names.

Well, seeing that we have a new ship lets welcome her to a long life of service on the coast! Cheers!

So I'm curious about the placement, and the change of heart on names. I wonder if it's still going to replace the Quinitsa temporarily, while she goes in for refit. So that would last for a month or so, depending on the extent of the refit. Then she'll probably be launched on to the Chemainus-Thetis-Kuper Island route for the Spring of 2007. Then hopefully (?) she'll be put on for supplemental service with the Kahloke on Denman-Hornby? The only Routes I think the Kuper is good for, would be the Buckey Bay-Denman, Denman-Hornby, Nanaimo-Gabriola, Chemainus-Thetis-Kuper, and Crofton-Vesuvius. I guess we'll just have to wait and see in 2 months or so to see where she goes first, and what she does for the rest of the year.

Isn't it a little strange that the M.V. Kuper now has a Q-class form factor (bridge on an arch over the vehicle lanes)?
