Me Chris and Graham are planning to do a few trips on route 30 in the next few weeks. First trip we are planning is either the 14th or 15th of Oct. I think we should do the 15th which is a Sunday because I was talking with Scott and he said he could do the 15th too. We will head to Jack Park once we meet the guys from the mainland then head back later on the 3:15pm Alberni. If anyone else wants to joing us feel free. I also want to do trips on the New West and the Vancouver and Coquitlam on route 30. So we have a few more trip to do. Anyone else interested???

I'm available on the Sunday Oct.15th. I'm interested in this trip.
I'm confused on the planned schedule:
Do we start out at Duke Point on the 10:15 Alberni sailing?
Please clarify what ships & times we are taking.
thanks.

The Vancouver guys get over to Duke Point, probably on the 10:15am they will take out of TSA and meet us at Duke Point around 12:15pm then we all go to Jack Park then we all get on the 3:15pm Alberni sailing to TSA. We all get off at TSA then me and Scott and if you come to Flugel will get back on the 5:45pm from TSA and go back as I dont think we want to wait at TSA till 8:15pm for the New West.

I've received my spousal-permission, so I am a "Yes" for this trip.
Hopefully it won't be too rainy, although a bit of wind would make the crossing more eventful.....as long as it's not too much wind.
The Island boys' return trip home will be in darkness, but that means we will be able to see the lights from all those buildings & roads and things in Greater Vancouver.
The 2-hour return sailing will be ample time for me to try to catch Karl actually laughing out loud LOL!
I haven't been on the Alberni for maybe 10 years.....it's time to ride it again.

Great, I have to choose between one of two trips, either Jervis Inlet on the Chilliwak or the Alberni on Duke Point. I think I would rather go on the Jervis Inlet Trip cause the 'wak won't be around much longer.

I'm joking here, but it would be a crazy idea to include a trip to the actual town (or other geographic feature) that the trip's ship is named for.
So for the Oct.15th trip, we could start out by meeting at the Somass Hotel in Port Alberni, listening to some Guns 'n Roses while driving thru town in a jacked-up pickup truck, wearing baseball hats backwards, and wearing beer-logo tee-shirts.
Then we could drive down to Duke Point together, including a smoke-break on the "Hump".
------------------------------------------
Following the same logic, if we ever did a group trip to Gabriola Island, the trip would start out at the Quinsam Hotel in Campbell River.
-----------------------------------------
Which means that any trip to Fulford Harbour will involve a long pre-trip journey.....

I'll join you, I think. I'll have to see "what's up" on the 15th.
Put me down as a maybe, and just maybe, I'll actually get to meet the Flugelhorn, and be able to distenguish the key features that make Fluge, Fluge.

warning: slight thread diversion...
Sort of related to what 'Naniamo (gawd, will that man ever learn to spel?) was saying-
I was thinking about what ferries might have trouble visiting the place they were named for- and the only two Queens that couldn't do it, I think, would be the Cumberland, since that's a bit inland, and the Chilliwack- since I don't believe the ferry could clear under the Mission bridge (?). The Alberni would have an adventurous sail up the west coast of Vancouver Island, and the Skeena would have a long, but fairly routine trip up to Prince Rupert.
Probably the most adventurous example of Mr. 'N's proposition would be climbing Mt. Klitsa before heading over to Thetis. Actually, Friday nights in the Somass in Port Alberni might be just as dangerous.

Seriously though, meeting people in real-life is great for learning "context", so that we can better understand each other in this online world. And there's something weird (and possibly annoying) of having so many detail-orientated people together in one place.....we really stand out, and not in a high-school popular kind of way. But that's ok, we are who we are.

Klitsa, and being the "man in the boat", but I probably shouldn't say that, so I won't. Sorry for the tangent-detour, to those who take their threads seriously.

We are returning on the 3:15pm from Duke Point as it is the Alberni. The mainland guys will either take the 10:15am over if we all want to go to Jack Point Park or they could go take the Alberni over at 12:45pm from TSA then meet us and head back on the 3:15pm. But I think most of us want to go to Jack Point Park so they will probably take the 10:15am New West over and then head back on the 3:15pm Alberni.

The trip will be somewhat of a "Summit of the Strait": - The Mainlanders will arrive together after a ferry-trip - They will meet the Islanders on land at Duke Point. - "Talks and meetings" to be held at Jack Point Park. - Followed by a shared ferry-trip from Duke to Tsawwassen on the Alberni, where Islanders and Mainlanders try to co-exist. - Islanders return home together by ferry, back to Duke Point. ----------------------------- Some info on Jack Point Park: from: www.nanaimoinformation.com/jack-point.phpDuke Point - Biggs Park - Jack Point ParkDuke Point is the name of the peninsula jutting out from the eastern side of the Nanaimo River Estuary. It is very long relative to its width - quite a phenomenon! Biggs Point is the park that extends along most of one side of Duke Point, leading to Jack Point, the park that covers the tip of the peninsula. It is a very beautiful oceanside area that is usually mostly deserted. Trails meander through the arbutus and douglas fir, snaking high and low, a few metres above the ocean or right beside it. The shore is all sculpted sandstone, offering interesting shelters and designs. You can see sea lions and sometimes otters, plus eagles and, if you're very lucky, orcas. Duke Point is a 15-20 minute drive from downtown Nanaimo. To get there, follow the highway that takes you to the Duke Point Ferry Terminal, and watch for the last right-hand turn some distance before the terminal. You'll park in a small lot beside the highway, and walk through an underpass to the parks. ---------------------------------------------------- www.trailpeak.com/index.jsp?cat=def&con=trail&val=828Trail Name: Biggs and Jack Point Park Activity: Hiking Length: 5 km Time to Complete: 1 hours Province: BC Closest City: Nanaimo, BC Seasons: Spring, Winter, Fall, Summer Trail difficulty: easy Trail rating: 4.0 out of 5 Submitted by: toolbox Description NTS Map:92F1. This is a nice walk on 5 kms of trail (about an 1 hour) that will take you out to a point with nice views. The trails are well maintained. Once you get past the lumberyard, it is amazing how quiet and forest-like it is. Nice views of Nanaimo from here and the shore scenery is really neat. Directions: Take the Island Parkway to Nanaimo and get off at Highway 19 to Duke Point. Then get off at Jackson Road and park at the parking lot. --------------------------------------------------- www.geocities.com/ferries_bc/ferrywatchers.htmlNanaimo/Duke Point There's a nice park (Biggs Park and Jack Point Park) along the western side of Duke Point, from the Nanaimo River Estuary out to the end of the peninsula. There is a parking lot on the other side of the highway and a tunnel going under the highway for pedestrians. From the point, which is about 30 minute walk from the parking lot, you can watch the ferries come and go from Duke Point (once every 2 hours) and the ferry across Nanaimo Harbour to Gabriola Island. There is a lot of harbour activity in the vicinity and you can see the city of Nanaimo from here. ----------------------------------------------------- Photo, from Dalllman's Photo's. =======================

Notmuchlonger if your working tommorrow Tuesday keep a lookout as I, and maybe Graham might take the 3:15pm Alberni to Tsawwassen. I want to get a few trips on her before her midlife. I am not totally sure yet but I might do a trip on the Alberni tommorrow too.
