Oh my. I hope it wasn't my dulling influence that caused all the 'couch potato-ism'. Actually, I never usually sit in one one place the entire journey either. Perhaps it was the plush, recliner seats. Very nice meeting Mr 'Nanaimo, and Karl and Scott. Karl does indeed LOL, he just does it very, very quietly. On the way back, I dined sumptuously, and snagged the last piece of chocolate cake and raspberry sauce. Bought a New Yorker and read some, and then went outside, as the rain had let up and it was fairly mild, and then went down to the main car deck and watched us cut through the gently rolling Strait. A pleasant journey.

Sounds like you guys had a great trip. I'm looking forward to seeing some photos, if there are any. I'm regretting not going now, but that's ok, there will be many Ferry trips to do still.

Well as I walked off the Alberni at 1500, I scanned the waiting to board passengers in the departures area to see if I could spot any faces from the pic posted in the "Life on the Coast "thread. Seeing none I figured out why when I got home and read the forum update and the change of plans. Anyway, I'm glad you enjoyed your trip on the Alberni. Probably the last you'll see of her before her MLU. As a side note, I will be saying good bye to the old girl when she goes in next month. I'll be retired before she comes back into service next year. I've been sailing on her since route 30 started in May, 1990. I also sailed on her briefly in 1980 to '81 when she still had just a single vehicle deck. To me she is the best of the "C" class to work on and one of the biggest assets the fleet has due to her commercial vehicle capacity. OK enough blithering for now.

Hmm... Rent the 'Berni? I dunno...
Perhaps an addtional trip on a cold and overcast November weekend, and do a scenic roundtrip and, well, "enjoy the dogwood while it lasts."
Perhaps they will replace the drink dispenser marked "Soda Pop" (I stood and starred at it in stunned silence for about 2 minutes) or perhaps they already have.
what a way to spend Life on the Coast.

Congrats on the retirement, Mr. Notmuchlonger. Oh how I'd love to hear all of your best stories from being on the Alberni, and other ships in the fleet, as I'm sure you've experienced some interesting moments!
I'm going to be making a trip on the Alberni myself in the next few weeks, no matter what. Sounds like Karl will be as well. So maybe a few of us, or all of us (doesn't matter) will be able to time it right to meet up with notmuchlonger, one day while he's doing his last few days of work aboard the Alberni. Even a simple wave would be good enough, as I'm sure he has more important things to do than having to deal with us ferry fans. Heh heh, anyways.....that's my goal for sometime in the next few weekends...

Glad you guys made the best out of a miserable day! Although I kinda like rain, especially after such a long mostly dry spell. It sure rained too... apparently the rainiest day since last September!
When Karl mentioned renting out the Alberni for a night (as a joke), it reminded me about what workhorses the route 30 ferries are. If you think about it... the 10:45 gets in at 12:45, and they're headed out again at 5:15.. just 4 1/2 hours "break time" in a whole day.
If you guys had decided to pull a late one, you woulda met my dad on the 10:45 out of Tsawwassen last night:)
