Exactly. Maybe they could modify her so her stern would be longer and it would close in so it could fit in the current docks. But probably if that happened the current dock at Prince Rupert would be widened
Say anyone thinking about a MV Sonia Positioning Cruise 2007 yet

1 - I have heard that there is a turn table on the car deck for turning vehicles around.
2 - Although this ship is not much wider than the QotN, at the stern, it appears to be substantially wider. Perhaps I am wrong - I guess we will find out.
3 - In order for passengers to take in the view on the Inside Passage I think they will have to spend a fair bit of money converting some interior space into decent view lounges from which you can actually see forward. Opportunities for forward viewing on the outer decks also appears quite limited.

First off, this is my first post. So hopefully I'll meet your standards for this board. It appears most members of this board believe the Sonia is the replacement vessel. However press reports I've read indicate there are two vessels available. Obviously one of those two will be rated higher than the other. So based on ratings, and price that ferry would be choice number 1. Further, Hahn has stated the ferry they are chasing is 3-4 years old, yet I note the Sonia was completed July 04 which makes the Greek box only two years old! So is the Sonia really the first choice, or do we have a dark horse in the running? We would assume that If negotiations fell apart for vessel "A", BCF will then have to pursue their second choice? Do we have a name for #2 so that we can play armchair President?

I guess we'll have to wait and see...

On CKNW this morning, Hahn wouldn't confirm the identity of the ship, although he said "there have been some good reports out there". The only 'report' anyone has heard seems to be about the Sonia, although I still hope it's not.

Do we have a name for #2 so that we can play armchair President? Let's call the other boat the "Hennie".

On CKNW this morning, Bill Good mentioned a "Spanish" vessel, but like hornbyguy said, Hahn wouldn't confirm it. Bill Good then mentioned having been on a Spanish ship and he said they made nice ships... the only problem being that they took a long time to load.
Later in the day I heard Jackie Miller mentioning the Sonia by name in the news as the probable replacement vessel.
Hahn also said that the future northern vessels may not load/unload like they do today, so they may have to modify the docks anyways.
Later in the day I heard Hahn say that they would be putting "black boxes" on all new ferries starting with the J.A.B. He also said there would be a safety audit of BC Ferries.

Good thing they're putting a black box on the J.A.B. Those treacherous waters between Denman and Hornby have been a veritable graveyard for ferries...

Which ones, exactly? Kahloke is fine on Denman/Hornby, only had a few incidents during a few gales or something. And by the way, the JAB will be slightly larger than Kahloke. (Kahloke: 32 Cars) (JAB: 36 Cars)

Well, maybe on a dark spring night there will only be two crew members on the bridge of the J.A.B. and they'll get distracted or something and run the ferry right into the island at full speed.

Right, John, and a couple of old hippies will lose their crop of pot plants over the side, and sue the company...

I still say the new Northern Vessels with load/unload like the Alaska Ferries. I don't think BC Ferries wants to deal with bow visors anymore.

One person on the bridge could be distracted by him/herself....

Mirrors NOT ALLOWED on bridge.
Here's something that he'll say
Great, now I'll have nightmares and horrible visions of the JAB washing up on Hornby Island's shore, while I see the five administrator stars floating over my head, and John's voice saying "it will crash, it will crash..."

AMHS vessels dock at the stern in Prince Rupert. They use their side doors at Ketchikan, and I believe, most everywhere else on the route north to Skagway/Haines. There are side noors both port and starboard not too far back from the bow. The design of the so-called "blue canoes" is very similar to that of the Coho.

SONIA, a Lemon??? Researching the links on previous pages, you will find the Sonia was built at the Atsalakis Shipyard in Perma Greece. Another link states the ferry took 4 years to construct. As many of you know 4 years to complete a ferry build is a very - very long time. Further, seasoned mariners know that vessels from Greece sometimes leave a lot to be desired. (You'll note that the B.C. Ferries new Super ferries are being constructed in Northern Europe). A google search for Atsalakis Shipyard turns up negligible information. So who are the constructors of the Sonia? Why did it take them 4 years to build it? Are they qualified builders? Does this shipyard have accreditation to organizations like ISO - "International Standards Organization". Why did TTT lines (the company who ordered the ferry) dump it within a few months? Are we, the taxpayers of B.C. buying another ferry that's a "LEMON"
