I sure can.
In fact I remember travelling on the QUINITSA around 1982 to Gabriola. The Quinitsa now works on the Buckley Bay - Denman Island route.

Speaking of the retired ferries why don't someone on this board edit them and see what they would be like in the new livery as in the ones that didn't make it through to after 2000 maybe the ones that didn't make it into the expo livery even

What vessel used the Nanaimo Harbour-Gabriola Island Route before 1974?
The Quinitsa looks similar to the Quinsam, only difference is size, capacity and the max height barriers at the hull are a different shape.
And what route did the Quillayute run on?
Thanks

Well now, that one I can't help you with. Only because I don't know much about the history of the provincial highways system. You see, BOTH the Quinitsa & the Quinsam, were actually built for the BC Ministry of highways system. Prior to 1985, the province had a seperate highways division, that had a few ferries & routes incorporated with it. In 1985, the provincial highways system was absorbed by BC Ferries & included in the deal was the Powell River - Comox route, among others.

They probably didn't use ferries like the Quinsam and Quinitsa. They probably used passenger only ferries like the Newcastle and Protection Island Ferries, or maybe the tug and barge idea. I don't know, 1974 is 14 years before i was around.

well. i can tell you that there was a run that was up @ kullet bay, which is where the kulleet came from, and then the Klatawa was the ship that ran from Nanaimo to Gabriola before the Quinsam.

oh, well maybe BC Ferries can bring a Saltspring Queen memory back by building another of Saltspring Queen( Name her Saltspring Queen ll and she can run as an extra vessel on southern gulf islands (Denman- Saltspring Island.
Or make a new route to James or Sidney Island from the Anacortes ferry terminal in sidney.

The James and Sidney Island crossing only works in the summer. As sea scots we sailed over to James and Sidney island - and then had to camp out on the beach.
Not many people live on these island. The WSF terminal is open to a number of different usages and lot's of talk as to what & who will work from there. Sidney is really changing over the years.
Can anyone remember the MV Cascade - she was the first ferry that worked the Mill Bay route. She run a ground over on the sunshine coast around 1978 /79. Was working for a logging company - moving equipment around. I then think - or heard she was towed into a yard and scrapped. shame...

I guess the quesation is how many to you want to see - as I have a set from the very beginning which you can see on line - via BC Musuem - the missing ones are from early 80's. I also have some very bad B&W of when the Cascade was painted up in Battleship grey - as they though the Japanese would land on the Island during the War. Does anyone remember the gun placements at Long Beach? This was the spot where it was viewed that they would land. The Mill Bay - Brentwood bay route had been going for about 16 years by then - and realy was a good short cut over the Malahat. Cars in the 1930's where not that powerfull and it was a full day trip up and over the malahat. Also there wasn't that many car - troop vessels on the Coast in those days.

Well Saltspring Queen looked good, any islands like saltspring or galiano may need a new ferry for them due to the "tangled up'' ferry runs, maybe with the M.V carrier princess the E&N could run a budd car or two to vancouver from nanaimo.

Well I think now a days you would want a larger ferry like the Bowen Queen or Quinsam for those islands. The Saltspring Queen would be way to small, although I dont know in car capacity sometimes during the off season there could only be 16 cars but maybe if they had certain ferries to the islands like for example the Cumberland could be assigned to serve Galiano and Mayne islands and the Mayne Queen could just do Pender Islands, it's Saturna that is so far out of the way. If your going from Pender to Victoria do you really want to go via Saturna or Mayne or Galiano? Saturna should have a separate ferry, a smaller one like the Tachek or something. Same with Pender being the closest island to Swartz Bay with the most sailings should have a separate ship.

Well ok, but I wasn't in Canada untill 4th august 2004.
I figured my proper way around 1st September and then I discovered the Gabriola Ferry's Name Was Quinsam November or December.
Mill Bay should not be retired, just because she is old.
Saltspring Queen looked like a good vessel, Vesuvius did too.
I think that the all the islands should have their own ferry(s), not have one ferry between 4 or 5 islands like Mayne Queen , and Queen of Cumberland.

costs money for the ferry and the crew. some islands may not have enough traffic for their own ferries

Well even 1 more ship on the run would be good. Then you could have three ferries operating between 4 islands. WSF has 4 boats and there are 4 islands. Although I dont know if each island has a ferry based there. I know the Elwha is out of Friday Harbour, and I think two ships are at Anacortes overnight and another ship is somewhere in the islands.
