I got the idea, why not form a "BC Ferries Club" an officially registered organization of BC Ferry lovers. It would have it's own site, forums, news, photo hosting and then would have meets and get guest speakers on stuff etc. We could also do a newsletter about the ferries and coastal communities. The newsletter would have advertising to help support the group as well as you would have to pay for access to the photo hosting, newsletter etc via yearly dues. Also by being an official club, it could gain us access to ferry discounts (maybe), tours and stuff.
What does everyone think of this?

What should we name the club?

|
|
Post by Mac Write on Jul 25, 2005 21:56:51 GMT -8
Would the club be run/owned by someone? or would it be a group of people who run it? Also would it be for profit or none profit (ads on the site etc).

The cost would be to cover newsletter (print), meeting places, servers, etc.

I'd rather not do a paying club either. I think this forum is good enough, and it's made us frequent posting members into a pretty close community.

The forum will always be free. Members dues as in any club are to cover costs. I want to go beyond just having a forum and move to meetings, possibly newsletter, definitely e-mail news letter (free), etc. This will also help grow the numbers into 500, 1,000, etc. Getting the word out. It's still just an idea.

Here's the low down on how the club and memberships would work. [/B] [li]Meeting place rental (like conference room etc) [/li][li]Server Hosting cost [/li][li]members space on server [/li][li]Ferry Club member card [/li][li]Access to members only discounts (once we can get them) [/li][li]Access to members only tours (once we can get them) [/li][li]Support the cost of running the group [/li][/ul] Meetings would maybe get guest speakers from BC Ferries and other related stuff. It's not cheap running the club. Also would be raffles for say sail passes and other donated goods. With the Dues for example. the cost covers you just showing up say in the conference room for the meeting (actually anyone will be able to attend the meetings make it a service announcement which will recruit more people). The club is just not forums it's about being out there, access to exclusive stuff and being a community in the community just like the Apple User Groups for example (they have to pay to be a member).

Probably a little far fetched for a ferry club. It might work a few years down the road when more members join the board so more members could cover...costs.

Probably a little far fetched for a ferry club. It might work a few years down the road when more members join the board so more members could cover...costs. We have to build a reputation, so the early the club is started and gets known the better and stronger the club will be for special access.

Ferry Clubs over here are sponsored by the Ferry company and in return they give members discount tickets ect... group rates.
The German Club also take trips around the world - which one of them was to BC Ferries. The German & Italian clubs have a number of different ferry operators to draw from - good marketing PR for the ferry companies - BUT would BC Ferries back this idea? Worth a punt to BC Ferries - what can they say......except NO - but then again if you don't ask you don't know or get...
