There are still plenty of Suburbs of Vancouver. How about Queen of Indian Arm, Queen of Port Moody, Queen of Belcarra.

I would have to agree that Richmond Queen, Port Moody Queen and Belcarra Queen sound better than the Queen of____ Not that they should all be named like that, I guess it depends on the name and if it sounds better ____Queen or Queen of____
Century of___ isent bad either.
How about a Queen of White Rock or White Rock Queen Cause there is a Queen of New West.
View Royal Queen Queen of Sooke, ha! that's funny.
Here is a funny name, Queen Charlotte Queen!
But I think they should stick with the Queen or Spirit names. I can only see the ferries as Queens and Spirits.

I think with the new Super C Ferries, they'll end up calling them something to do with Super... just because the Fastcats had "cat" eg: Pacificat Voyager, seeming they were Catamarans, and so they made everything to do with them with cats like on the side of them with the design of a cat. But with the Super C's they'll most likely make anything super the theme of the ship. But this is of course my prediction and of course its early days yet and they could make it totally different.

Nice choices for names Royal Caribbean but this could be better for the Spirt of the Straight and Lower Mainland Queen names you posted. Spirt of Georgia Sraight? Or Spirt of the Lower Mainland?

In the spirit of this depressing discussion:
"MV Spirit of _*insert name of highest bidder* _"
Sure, why not name our ferries like billion-dollar sports arenas?
MV Spirit of Staples. MV Husky Gasoline. MV Molson Queen. MV Enron - painted black, flying a pirate flag- and MV Air Canada (but be sure the cheque clears before painting the name).
In an earlier thread, I suggested that we drop the "Queen" and "Spirit" tradition for new boats. I'll repeat the argument.
I think we would be wise to honour the early ships on our coast. We have to pick and choose. Two of the best are almost taken: Beaver and Otter are the SeaBus vessels, but they are prefixed "Burrard-", so we could have BCF boats named Otter and Beaver.
HBC Beaver was the first steamship in BC; her sister Otter was a larger cousin. Reaching farther back, HMS Resolution was Cook's 1778 round-the-world sloop.
MV Discovery would be another fine name. That was George Vancouver's little ship. I'll be happy with MV Sutil and MV Mexicana, too.
They were Commander Quadra's boats, when he bumped into Vancouver at English Bay. Oops! Are we at war? Uhh, I dunno .. do you?
Beats me, they both said; so these seamen embarked on a co-operative mission to map the SW coast of BC that summer in 1792.
We could not do better than name some of our boats in their memory. While we race across the Strait of Georgia at 20 knots in our big white ferries, our skipper is plowing blue water first charted by Vancouver and Quadra's people.

Thats a contrediction, bc ferries are rarely late and if they are it's usally a marine emergency that they HAVE TO respond to by marine law.

i think the entire fleet is rarely ontime, cause the employees wanted thier overtime

Post by kylefossett on Nov 3, 2004 16:29:58 GMT -8
if you watch the current conditions page they are rarely late unless like in a previous post they are responding to a marine emergency, weather(main reason this time of year), heavy traffic(the reason 90% of the time in the summer) or in the case of the nanny because of the way it has to be loaded. the naniamo will usually make up time on its late trip friday nights from tsawwassen to long harbor whether it is late running or not. this sure sounds like they are trying to get home eithout having to go into overtime. you tell a bc ferries employee that they are late to get overtime pay and you better be ready to argue your reasoning for that statement. most emplyees that i know will rip right into you if you make that comment to them www.saveourferries.com

Personally it's not a big deal to me if the ferries are no more than ten minutes late. Usually if they are more than ten minutes late it's due to a more serious problem.

Who is going to have the final say on the name of the 3 new vessels ?
The government of the day ?
The General Public? by say a vote ?
or will it be done in a small back room - by a nobody / person ?
As the governments in Europe don't own any the ferry services any more - the naming is done by the Ferry company - but to get the public on there side - they have a open competation on the nameing. Very good PR value also - the winning name - person get's a cash prize and life time - free travel ect..... We do have some very interesting names.

Stick to the facts boys! On time is classified as 9 minutes or less. Approximately 93% of sailings are on time. Lateness is caused by circumstances beyond the control of operations. Marine Emergency, weather, mechanical problems, etc. NEVER becuase the crew are wanting overtime. As for the killer overtime clause? What a load of nonsense. The clause remains unchanged except for a 5 min grace period!

the ferries could be on time 100% of the time if they didn't carry passengers. the gulf islands ferry (route 9) is usually late becasue they have to build a jigsaw puzzle just to get four different island's traffic on the car deck

I remember 2 years ago when the Nanny was 1 hour late leaving Tsawassen on her Saturday noon-hour direct trip to Saltspring and it was due to traffic on the Islands.
