Just checked out the current conditions page. Did anybody know that BOTH the cumbersome Cumberland AND the Mayne Queen were working in tandem today on the southern Gulf Islands run? -Anybody know what's up with that?
-BIFF!

thats the nickname of the skeena queen, because of her long propeller shafts, they vibrate at high speed, and tend to "Scream"

I have noticed the scream and the vibrations she makes.

I do like the general look of the Skeena Queen - but she is not that well designed. I am sure that BCF had high hope for this type of design..But the engine problems make her very diffcult to sell - even the design on some where.
A little bit off course here - but I did bring up this subject - if the BCF were so bloody great then why couldn't they sell any of the designs on around the world - where other Ferry companies or yards are able to?
Here is the proof - the design looks great - but in operational mode she is crap - you have just mention one of the major problems in the engines and Vib that comes off it. Maybe - and I could be totaly wrong - but didn't she - Skeena Queen cost a lot to build and there was a major delay in bringing her into service?

yeah. and if you were to take the skeena and drop then engines within 7 feet of the prop shafts(like the klatawa and kulleet) then suddenly im sure alot of the problems with the Skreaming queen would go away

I beleive that some of the problems are with the engines themself - as per problems with the shaft and the vib it was causing.
They have in broad general terms put in the wrong - type / size of engines - which appear to be the main - if not the only problem with this vessel.
What is the view from the "engineer" on this subject?

the skeena has had engines replaced. these were done under warranty by the supplier, mitsubishi i believe.

they also added large rubber pads under the new motors, apparently. Must look goofy.

yeah. but they tend to work. but i think they should switch them out with a pair of cats. they would last a lot longer. and they tend to have lesser vibrations. the rubber pads were on the Island planet, and they reduced the vibration to almost 0%

Skeena Queen : So we have come full circle - back to what I offered.
That she is a bloody design mistake. Like I said - looks good - but just doens't work.
You some times wonder how this design ever got pased and then put into production. Surely people - engineers in the ship yard would have noticed things about her.
I think she was late and very much over priced - hence why they only made one and not the talked about 3 vessels.

it was expensive because the shipyard that built her assumed shed be another large klataw, and insted they wanted all this curving surface, which made it harder fto build, and more expensive, and then the shafts made the engines wear out quicker. fix those, and then i think youd have another klitsa, which is out maybe .089% of the time for repairs.

So - like with a lot of things that BCF tried to do - like build a vessel they changed there mind half way through the project - or else the design / engineering side of the BC Ferries is crap.
I think more likely the design people don't talk to the engineers and vise verse. You can design a great - vessel on paper - then try to transfer that to metal - you come unstuck.
The problem she had in the very beginning should have never happen.
How can a shipyard - if they know what they are doing make a mistake and think that the Skeena Queen was something else ? Who runs these ship yards?

I have a program I recorded off of TV a few years ago called "How to Build a Car Ferry" it is on the building of the Skeena Queen. It's pretty good. Too bad there wasent a way to show it to everyone who hasent seen it.

Well I have the tape, the show is 30 min in length. I guess I could send the original tape but I would like it back after, unless I can figure out how to copy it.
