Have any of you seen this site. Apart from one BCF vessel - the rest are from - mostly Europe - so it gives a good idea of what is actully out there in the way of Ferries. I have been on a few. Some are very good - great ride - some are crap ride and service. Pay your money take your choice - I guess. www.ship-technology.com/projects/fastandconventionalferries_gallery.html

Good find, cascade. I like the fact that there is a good ammount of both interior and exterior photos. A while ago someone posted a link to a Sweedish site with photos of The Queen of Chilliwack (Ex Basto I); I managed to find a link that led me to a much larger index. The best index that I could find was the alphabetical 'Shipping Comanies' index, which you can find at: www.faktaomfartyg.com/rederier.htmThis is how I found the Red Funnel Ferries ship Red Falcon that looks like the Capilano and Cumberland.

in fact if you check the registry, the same company designed all three ships.

I guess to become a true "spotter" - like a train spotter, then you need to ride on as many vessels as possible. People do it for trains and other things - so why not on Ferries?
If you just look at BCF and WSF ferries - sometimes they look old - aged & boring. Yes I agree that some of the European ones look the same - but you do have a massive range of vessels to try out. Just going from the UK to France through one port - Dover. There are 6 companies looking for your buiness - with a range of different vessels and different price bands to suit all budgets. Maybe that's what we need in BC ?
Have any of you been to europe and tried out the ferries here and taken any pictures ? You know that a few German's (They are all mad) travel in package tours -last one to the BC coast was in 2002 and put up a web site of the trip - even wrote to BCF asking permission to visit all the parts of the Vessel - will post the link - if any of you speak or understand German - then all the better. Some very interesting pic's even of the crew's. There is a couple of the Harbourlynx for you kid in the batch.

I haven't been over to Europe yet (my plans call for me to get over there in the next three years), but when I do get over there I hope to spend atleast a little time examaning European ferry systems. I'm already impressed with the wide range of choices that are given to the consumer in Europe from what I've learned trough the web and forums like this. The first company that serves a range of international ports that caught my eye was the Stena Line (drawn to my attention by BC Ferries' purchase of one of their ships, the former Stena Danica). Before I heard about lines like Stena Line, I didn't realize how far reaching (geographically) some of these companies are. When I was looking through the Stena Line pages on that Sweedish site that I've mentioned before (http://www.faktaomfartyg.com/rederier.htm), I noticed a connection to BC... Can someone tell me why there is refernce to the Princess Marguerite being owned by Stena line? See: www.faktaomfartyg.com/princess_marguerite_1949.htmLook for: "1988 07. Såld till British Columbia Stena Line Co, Vancouver, Kanada. Samma trafik." And what about this photo?!: www.faktaomfartyg.com/princess_marguerite_1949_b_2.htm

The Stena Line - has gone through a number of different ownership - setups. There are again like the P&O group - once very large and proud owners of ship's and big shipping companies in there own right. Now if I had a choice of P&O or Stena Line vessel - I would go via P&O - as they have fallen on hard times - lack of investment in the Vessels. They were very big in the mid 1980's - but since then - with the dropping of duty free goods - going outside the UK - then the profits - investment need was just not there.
So what is the BC Stena line linkage - well I think it is one of these spin off's in the 1980's - when they were at there top - again using the "Brand" name - which did carry a lot of weight - but not now.
If you look at when BCFS - bought a few vessels from Europe Stena line figures in the frame.

Other than the Queen of the North, are there any more ships bought by BC Ferries from Stena Line?

Hey Tsawwassen Terminal, would you be able to send me those photos of the ferries during the snowstorm??? I really liked those photos as I thought it was neat to see the ferries in a snowstorm. If you still have them. Let me know if you can and I will give you my email. ;D

Stena Line took over the Seattle to Victoria run for a few years. They took ownership of the Princess Maggie and the Vancouver ISland Princess.
They also bought over a huge ferry, the Crown Princess Victoria and the service only lasted a couple years.
The Princess Maggie was sold and eventually scrapped.
The Vancouver Island Princess I believe is still around somewhere in China. Her Current Name might be Nan-Hai-Ming- Zhu.

Why would Stena Line do that? They are in Europe and they take a route 6,000 miles from them that is kinda weird don't you think?
