The Nanny is expected to retire next year but it's under review so if they're changing it I say it should be near the end of the year 2010

It says on Johns website, this site that she will in 2006/2007 but I really doubt it will be that early.

They should have refitted all the V and B-class in the 90's

No, no. They should have replaced them in the '90s.

Replace them in the 90s? why would they do that?

They probably should have done a midlife refit, that included mechanics sometime during the 90's tot he V's. Perhaps if they had done that, we wouldn't be in such a situation that we are in with the Queen of Vancouver.

Replace them in the 90s? why would they do that? Why would you even ask that question? They should have kept building more ships after the Spirits.

True. but they were still in good condition

40 years is good enough for those V-Class time to get them out of the fleet. Especialy the Van and Esq. The Sannich should stay slighty longer because of the refit

I really think they should have built two more spirits for route 2, instead of the Pacificats.

It just might have worked who needs 3 Fastcats when you could have 2 Super ferries

They weren't in good condition in the 1990s, they aren't in good conditon now. The V class were, on the whole mainained well but despite the little fantasies we like to have on this board they cannot last forever. The V Class went bad about 5 years ago, when the Victoria left the fleet.

yeah. ive noticedd they spend alot of money maintaining the spirits and stuff, but the older vessels get the screw job. i do think that they should have thought more with the pacificats, cause im sure there was a route they could use that would have worked even using them for small cars only on the swartz bay -> Tsw run.

I always thought they should of built more Spirit ships instead of the fastcats. Would of been a better way go go.

the nanny is getting a major refit(almost c-class type) in october of this year. they are upgrading the passenger areas and some mechanical. will be seeing my connection who works on the nanny next weekend so will get more info about the refit, type and timeline then.
the fastcats were built route specific. you could not run them at the speed they were built for once you have gotten across the strait. you would still have half the route to go at a slower speed.

yeah, but it would hav still saved time, the people on the island arn't as pissy as the people who live in horseshoe bay

i doubt that. are you trying to say that the people of horseshoe bay are higher class snottier people. you should go to a gulf island and try to run a small logging operation and see how pissy those people get

There's several sites of her interior, so I think it will be all good. What I want to see is more interior of Surrey and Alberni and SOVI before they go in for refit because they're never gonna look like that and the dogwood theme will be a thing of the past.

People in West Van have far more political clout, and a much more effective municipal gov't than any of the Gulf Islands with perhaps the exception of Salt Spring. Plus, there is a lot more money there than on any of the islands.
Where did you hear the Naniamo was going in for a big refit? I have a hard time believing BCF would do something like that with a ship that even in the 'best case scenario' will be in service for less than 5 years. The Queen of Burnaby, too, is scheduled for major work next year. Perhaps the Tsawwassen will be retired first?

And building more Spiritis would be good in many ways, however they'd be restricted to Route 1, and 30. They cannot operate in Horseshoe Bay because of their size.

I've been trying to put the pieces together on the plan for the Nanaimo Burnaby and Tsawwasen for a while. Concerning the Nanaimo, I found a few interesting bits of info.
We know that the Nanaimo had a million dollar upgrade planned that was cancelled at the last minute (This was posted on the Yahoo!Groups BCFerries Club site):
From: "mirrleeskvssm" <ssi_al@h...> Date: Sat Jan 29, 2005 8:50 pm Subject: Re: Queen of Naniamo
The Queen of Nanaimo's major refit has now been delayed until after the summer at least. There will be a "mini-refit" from April 11-22 to cover SIC 16 items only, will keep the certificates valid. The major one will now likely occur sometime after October, although at this point no dates have been set. I am actually going to a meeting with senior managers next Friday to discuss this very issue, I hope that some of the rumours we have heard so far will be either confirmed or denied at this meeting. If I hear anything significant, I will post it here. The Tsawwassen's whereabouts at this time is unknown to me, we will be getting her for those 2 weeks in April though! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Also, I found this from a while ago (from this board):
Gregg Guest Re: Q .of Nanaimo « Reply #14 on: 10/26/2004 at 23:24:44 » -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Just Visiting figured I could answer a few questions since I work on the vessel (Queen of Nanaimo).
The Queen of Nanaiimo is not retiring anytime soon, at the next refit they are dropping about a million dollars on passanger areas. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And one more piece of info from BC Ferries themselves:
Service Notices - Comox-Powell River
Regular vessel returns April 1
Issued February 03, 2005
The Queen of Burnaby is expected to return from refit to resume regular service on Friday, April 1.
The vessel was originally scheduled to return to the route in mid-March. Due to the good progress made at refit, BC Ferries is taking the opportunity to proceed with additional work originally scheduled for next year’s refit.
This work consists of replacing sections of deck steel as required on both sides of the sun deck level of the vessel.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From what I've seen in the groups, the next refit that this notice talks about is going to be a major refit (as major as the Nanaimo's refit?).
So this might mean that BCFS will keep both the Nanaimo and the Burnaby after major refits as intermediate vessels. I, for one, hope this is the case.
