Yes, the Nisqually used the overhead loading ramp for foot traffic, and I assume the Quinault will do the same at Edmonds/Kingston. WHen I worked the Klickitat at Edmonds in 1998, we didn't use the overhead ramp because the rolling gates hadn't been installed yet.

I didn't see rolling gates on the QUINAULT when I took her from Keystone to Port Townsend in August of 2005. I took a ride aboard either the QUINAULT or ILLAHEE (after the 1987 steeling) on the Seattle - Bremerton run some time ago. And, before the rolling gates. It took two deck hands to lift and stow the gate then and netting was needed for the gaps each side of the ramp. Unless rolling gates have recently been installed aboard the QUINAULT since 2005, we footies may be boarding her on the Main Deck on the Kingston run. Also, it'll be good to touch her 1927 brass handrails as we climb the stairway up from the Main Deck to the Saloon Deck.

Hmm. They may well be swinging gates on the Quinault... it's been several years since I've set foot on the old gal.

Actually, I think it would be good to see the NISQUALLY put on this run instead. The QUINAULT doesn't quite fit in this trio.
The WALLA WALLA, EVERGREEN STATE, and NISQUALLY were workmates in the San Juans in 1973. I rode the ES to Camp Orkila for my first trip there that year and we met the huge eastbound Big W (nearly took my breath away seeing that gigantic art of steel). We took the NISQUALLY back and met the ES in the islands.
I think WSF should get ready and put the NISQUALLY on the Kingston run as this would be a homecoming for this vessel as she spent many years on this run. The QUINAULT spent much of her Puget Sound career at Vashon Island (she did pay a visit to Kingston on odd occasions).

The Nisqually isn't ready for service yet, period. It'll be a bit longer for her.
And the historical angle is nice, but WSF doesn't pay much more attention to history than BCF does.

Okay...sounds like the Issaquah is going to the yard after tonight. The Kitsap will move to Vashon and the Chelan will go to Bremerton, and the Quinault will make her appearance at Kingston.

The Quinault was gone from Eagle Harbor this morning. And one of the Issaquah's (I presume the Chelan came in about 3:30pm). I will keep an eye out for the Issaquah tonight.

My apologies the "Issaquah" has already arrived here at Eagle Harbor. Accoirding the WSF vessel watch the Quinault is at Edmonds and the Chelan is on the Bremerton route.

This doesn't have to do with Kingston, but it involves one of their normal boats.
Okay...the SPOKANE runs fine at Kingston, but after 8 days at Bremerton, has generator issues...geeze
WSF cancelled the 6:20 to Seattle and 7:35 from Seattle today.
The Kitsap Ferry Co's PO boat filled up. There were a number of us who sat outside because there were no more seats on the MELISSA ANN.
The SPOKANE will resume with the 9:00 to Seattle.

Once again, an issue on the SPOKANE...it was a medical emergency, but it just had to be on the SPOKANE...it was the 4:20 to Bremerton that was delayed 45 minutes. I am right now stuck in Seattle waiting for her to return around 7:05 or so. Loads of fun, only two days apart, and both having something to do with the SPOKANE-and Bremerton.

I was scouting out the Edmonds vessel cam this morning on saw people exiting the Quinault via the car deck.
I was on the Quinault last summer but I don't remember if she has gates to load passengers or not. If she does, maybe they aren't wide enough to work?

Take a look at my pic above on this thread of the QUINAULT in Keystone Harbor in 2005. You'll notice above the little vent above the first Main Deck port hole the gate. This is a lift gate and requires two people to lift and stow. I guess that she hasn't been upgraded yet with roller gates like what the ILLAHEE and NISQUALLY have. I'll have to take a look at the QUINAULT again soon and see if she still has the lift gates or the new roller ones.

I did a round trip today, Quinault to Kingston, Evergreen State back to Edmonds. To answer everyones burning questions, the Quinault loaded/unloaded passengers via the car deck, the Evergreen State did it on the overheads. The Evergreen State's galley was open, the Quinault's was not.

It's great to hear that Evergreen's Galley has been cleaned up and is open. She must be returning to the image of the great lady that she is!!!

The Evergreen State still had stuff from her last international run, including a BC Ferries schedule from 2000. Also had a map of downtown Victoria.

If only WSF had cleaned up the galley last year...
I figured the galley on the Quinault wouldn't be open considering that outside of Pt. Townsend-Keystone, she is never used on routes that have galley service.

So the Quinalt follows behind the Evergreen State to pick up the remaining traffic left behind??? What if there is no traffic left behind??? What sailings wouldent have any left overs, early late sailings?? Does she follow the whole day or just at peak times???

The Quinault tied up at Kingston at about 8pm last night. She follows the Evergreen State picking up traffic. On the 6:30pm coming from Kingston the Evergreen had room for about 10 more cars, and they filled up the Quinault when she left Edmonds at about 5pm. They did a crappy job loading though, there were a few big trucks and there was lots of space inbetween them.

I have the opinion that the use of three vessels on the Edmonds-Kingston route works much better than anticipated. While the third vessel (MV Quinault) follows the second vessel, in most cases, additional traffic builds during the time between the departure of the second vessel and the docking of the third. Traffic keeps moving rather than building during a long wait when only two vessels are operating. WSF management should find funds for a 3 vessel operation (especially on week ends) during the busy summer months ;D.

However, they do not have the say. The legislature does. And so far the legislature hasn't given WSF one more cent of money for operations. Until our state reps get it through their head that the ferry system is part of the highway system around here, do not look for increases in service. They're not going to happen, period. I think the long term plan calls for three boat service starting in about 2012. That is assuming the state ever coughs up the money for the service, which given their behavior this session and in the past, seems unlikely.

I think it worked better with the Chelan. The Evergreen State and Quinault are much slower, even one passenger commented on how long it took for the Quinault to make the crossing.

Bearing in mind the size of the vessel as compared to the weight of the big trucks, their limited parking for same trucks, and crews' lack of familiarity with the vessel (on-call folks don't get out to the interisland or Port Townsend much), I know that I (with ten years' experience) couldn't do much better...

I finally was able to ride the Evergreen State today. I have ridden just about every boat in the fleet but that old girl. What a time warp. Everything from the school lunch type concessions area, the powdered soap dispensers in the restrooms and original tables and seats.
Cool old vessel. She made the run over to Kingston in good time considering the weather conditions. Good times!
