More BSC from May 19, 2016: I enjoyed my crossings on this cable ferry. A peaceful time to experience something new. A reminder that we can choose to surrender our peace to get ourselves lost in a bottomless pit of frustration. From the accompanying article:
Edit 12:20 By the reports I have read it sounds as if a hydraulic hose has burst (or at least leaked) spraying oil onto hot engine parts causing smoke and according to at least one report fire. If these reports are correct the fix should be fairly quick & easy. On the other hand, engine room monitoring (or lack there of) may be the reason that a problem like this was not caught sooner, before it became fairly serious.

Water taxi service for foot pax will be implemented in the ASAP, per this service notice [http://www.bcferries.com/bcfservicenotice?id=960217] updated at 10:17am. As of right now, the BSC appears to be arriving in Buckley Bay under tow. Nav status: Not under command. I can't help but think that the opponents are going to have a field day with this. Edit: Dear BC Ferries is already on it, go figure. Word of mouth on the Denman Facebook group says that it is estimated that it will be 3-4 hours to fix her.

... engine room monitoring (or lack there of) may be the reason that a problem like this was not caught sooner, before it became fairly serious. The hoses on hydraulic systems with long duty cycles tend to fail pretty rapidly when they do, and from initial reports it sounds like a pin hole failure of a hose. There would be no warning, unlike the drip drip drip of a coupling that was leaking. Regardless, hydraulic fluids are relatively hard to ignite, with a hot surface flash point of 350-480 ºC so a fire is unlikely - you don't want to breath in the atomized fluid though as that is methyl-ethyl bad stuff... I wonder if there was a surcharge levied as the trip became a day trip vs a crossing?

A link to a video that I shot of the BSC being loaded at Buckley Bay. What makes it interesting, is that it's shot at dusk, and the vehicle tail-lights make an interesting dance of red lights. Video is sped-up 4 times. VIDEO HEREI'm going to include this as part of a larger YouTube video, but here it is as a stand-alone.

A small postscript to Mr Horn's excellent photo essay, above...
It's interesting how the traffic varies between the two islands, this time of year. I arrived at Buckley Bay at 3:05 this afternoon (Sunday), and had the terminal to myself for a bit, since the barge wasn't shuttling. By the 4:00 departure, there were 30 cars, and two overheights. The Kahloke was shuttling at the Hornby end, and doing a bit of a storm course, with the big swells in Lambert Channel. It left Gravelly Bay full, at 4:40, meaning that only about eight of the 34 (AEQ) load leaving Buckley were destined for Denman. Upon arrival at Shingle Spit just before five, I counted 91 cars lined up the road, waiting for a 26 car ferry.
Hornby's summer hordes are departing. Feels more peaceful already.

Some nice clean views of the BSC on a dusk round-trip, and a bit of a camera snafu.
I was operating two cameras, approx 20 meters apart. My big Sony was shooting video, and the little Sony was on a gorilla-pod on the bench for still shots. I got the video rolling and then moved over to the small camera for stills.
So I was unaware that my big camera while recording video had some autofocus brain confusion when some of the dusk lighting changed. The result is that part of the 2nd leg of the trip was out of focus, and so I've eliminated that. Normally I'd have caught this right away and corrected it, but I was busy getting some nice stills. Live and learn.
Music is by The Crickets.

The quest for the epic timelapse continues. This attempt gave me a few lessons, but lots of fun. I am happy with the results, in spite of some issues. Now in terms of what this video shows, I'm happy with: - the timelapse effect showing how the Buckley Bay holding lanes are a continue fill and empty and fill and empty and fill and empty.... - the timelapse shows that many of the cars departing the cable ferry immediately turn into the Petro Canada station - the changing light conditions and how the water immediately looks different once the sun goes down (5:20 mark) A progression of stills: DSC05241 by Mike Bonkowski, on Flickr . by Mike Bonkowski, on Flickr . by Mike Bonkowski, on Flickr ------------------ My main regret is that I didn't do this type of project during the "Dung Bomb Era."

News release from today, re warranty work: from HEREI thought the most interesting tidbit from this press release was the figure for extra runs, or shuttling. A fair number of Hornby and Denman residents have been alleging that the BS Con doesn't do as many crossings as Quinitsa, but when I checked last year's figure for extra runs in the report to the BC Ferry Commissioner, it would appear that the barge has been delivering the same service. Some, no doubt, would allege the books are cooked. That may be.
BC Ferries is also claiming an increase in AEQ capacity, which I would agree with. 48 max, with Quinitsa, 52-54 with the barge. But they're mentioning a 50% fuel saving, which I thought was lower than the original projection, and they're already replacing cables, which we were certainly told would be lasting longer. The barge has not yet faced the worst of the fall and winter gales, and there are concerns about the mechanisms that handle the cables.
All in all, I'd say that the jury is still very much out on the most substantial concerns raised by Pete Kimmerly. For now, the BS Con is getting islanders back and forth dependably, and we can only hope it continues.

It's important to note that the BSC will be out of service for much of the worst fall weather. I always say that the fall wind picks up in mid October and doesn't die down until around Christmas... the BSC will be out for half that period.
