I have ridden the DIF a few times now for work. I can confirm that Flug's last picture is of the Digby Island Ferry Terminal.
Flying into YPR is quite an experience, because after flying in you hop on a bus to go on the boat... after 2 hours in the air and wanting to get to the hotel (or going the other direction having worked up there and then having the evening flight being delayed), the additional hour isn't necessarily the most enjoyable experience.
I will go through my prince rupert files to see if I kept any pictures from there from my first (work) trip there.
Generally, the Hawkair boat would have maybe 30 people on it, while the Air Canada boat would be closer to 80? Both airlines use Dash-8s, and very few people use the ferry other than airline customers.

Continuing on my recent uploads of Ferry Tours and Whistles to YouTube, here is my short and sweet tour of the Digby Island Ferry.
Up Next will be a Tour of the Quadra Queen II.

Looks like the same boat that was in use back in the late 70's-80's when we lived in Rupert.

They normally used 737-200's (I know, the pic is of a 727-100).

The plane appeared to be on final approach with full flaps and gear down. A closeup shows a 1976 Montreal Olympics logo next to the main passenger hatch. The plane was a Boeing 727-17 (B721). Flights in and out of CYPR sure keep the Digby Island ferry and local Prince Rupert motor coaches busy!

Is the Digby Island Ferry Route the responsibility of the BC Ferries?

Is the Digby Island Ferry Route the responsibility of the BC Ferries? No. However, there is a water-taxi route from Prince Rupert (not the Nicola route) that BC Ferries oversees and contracts out. But the Digby Island Ferry (the blue ship) is not part of what BC Ferries oversees.

Is the Digby Island ferry free??? That reminds me of Ketchikan when we stopped there on the Norwegian Sun. You have to take a ferry to get to the Ketchikan airport too. They have two ferries that shuttle back and forth though. It was neat to see from a cruise ship though.

Is the Digby Island ferry free??? No, as per this. Passengers coming to/from airline connections have their ferry fare included in the price of their air ticket. It does list a fare for walk-on passengers not going to/from the airport.

DIF and NorEx, at Prince Rupert in morning of August 5, 2015. NorEx's on-time departure means that time is 7:40am or so, and DIF is almost ready to start her day at 8:00am (with a full load of workers headed to the airport) 20150805_073553 by Mike Bonkowski, on Flickr

Here's my video of Digby Island Ferry, shot on morning of August 5, 2015 at Prince Rupert.
- note that she's operating as a single-ended ship.

I’ve always been fascinated with non-BC Ferries ferries on the west coast and I’ve always wondered whether it would be better or worse to be run by BC Ferries. In this case I know that it’s a odd route especially being up north where there is not as much action and I don’t know how smoothly it runs but in your guys’ opinion do you think it would be better under BC Ferries management? What about the DIF. Do you guys think they’d replace it or keep it since it’s been running it for all this time?

Great to see new members delving into some of the smaller but interesting issues regarding ferry/marine traffic on the BC coast. Since the Digby Island Ferry connects the city of Prince Rupert with its' airport, the service is essential and at this point I'm not aware of any dissatisfaction regarding either the vessel itself or the quality of service the ferry provides however most residents of the area a probably content with the current status of the mode of transport to and from the airport and surrounding areas of Digby Island. It might be interesting to ask if this ferry receives any federal funding, ie. through Transport Canada as it services an airport? I think this ferry route and nature of service is not of particular interest to B.C. Ferries at the moment but in future, who knows?

The recent discussion prompted me to read the Prince Rupert Airport Authority's web page. I found a news release from 2019 for how the airport ferry fee of $46 is collected through the airlines, as a charge on the airline ticket invoice: FEE HEREFerry costs are incurred by the City of Prince Rupert local government, who essentially runs the airport authority. Here's the DIF ferry schedule, and the fee structure: H E R EPer the City of Prince Rupert annual budget document, the total annual costs for the airport ferry are budgeted at $2.5million for 2019. - Direct revenues for the ferry are budgeted at $1.415 million, with the shortfall covered by general property taxes.

I just dug around and found that as of January 2019 the city of Port Rupert was “exploring funding options” to build a new terminal on the PR side. Council had approved a application to the Investing in Canada Infrastructure (ICIP) which is a grant targeted towards rural communities and covers up to 90 per cent of the cost of the project. The money would be going towards moving the terminal from its current location to the area next to Kwinitsa Station and which would be branded as Rupert’s Landing. Also found that during the refit this year it was replaced by tow and barge. Maybe one day we’ll see the “MV Digby” of the who knows maybe K or N class. or no class at all! But even if BC Ferries does take over I doubt they’d keep it because it would be a while in the future and it was built in ‘70.

'DIF', the Digby Island Ferry, en route from Digby Island back to its Kaien Island terminal @ 'Fairview', Prince Rupert, and past the BCF termial & the NorAd loading for Haida Gwaii - 25 July 2019. This was taken from the Prince Rupert Adventure Tours boat Inside Passage, shortly after the DIF departed Digby Island.

She is looking nice and spiffy after her recent refit. I am appreciating your various Prince Rupert views from the tour boat.

Local gov't should 'explore options' for building a bridge and join the 21st century-Prince Rupert is such a pathetic place in so many ways.
