Horseshoe Bay Terminal, 9 April 1971, with the Queen of Tsawwassen at Berth 1. She was a regular on Route 2 at that time. Clicking on the photo will take you to a higher resolution version on Flickr. The berth structure looks little changed from Blackball days which ended 10 years earlier. From the JST Flickr photo site ©

We were on Route 2 a minimum of 4 or so times a year prior to moving in '72. I actually remember that birthday cake. We most often picked dad up at his office in the Guiness Building late afternoon and drove direct to Horseshoe Bay. That meant dinner on the ferry in the dining room and the men servers in their vests. I only remember being on a "shorter" ferry once back then and it was on Route 1.

Photo from the booklet "BC Ferries - Exploring British Columbia's Coastal Waterways". The photography and publishing was done by John L. Barnard Photographs Ltd. of Sidney BC Horseshoe Bay in the late 1970's or early 1980's. - berth 1 is the only one that is double-decked. So that Victoria class boat is only one decked?

So that Victoria class boat is only one decked? That boat is what most would call a B class (either the Nanaimo, New Westminster, or Burnaby). This shows a stretched B-class. The Nanaimo & Burnaby remain more or less in this form today. The other B-class (the New Westminster) had the extra car deck added and is more like the now all gone V-class vessels ( Victoria, Vancouver, Saanich & Esquimalt). In my mind all seven V & B class ferries are/were of the same class (and as built pretty close to identical) which we once called the Seven Sisters. An eigth sister is still missing. It is known as the Queen of Richmond. Perhaps we were see her out on the water again early next spring.

That "V" is actually a "B" Class and is likely Queen of New Westminster around 1983. Yes the "B"'s have only a single car deck. The berth at Langdale wasn't double ramped until 1984 when the 'Alberni had a very brief stint on route 3.

Two photos of Horseshoe Bay from today: The snow in the Coast Mountains really sets off the terminal colours nicely.

Went to Nanaimo last Friday and got this shot of the Queen of Capilano and the Queen of Oak Bay. The Oak Bay had slowed down while we passed. Don't know why? On the left has to be BC's most-photographed home.

With the current Berth 2 closure and the off-season Route 2 schedule back in place, it is impossible to maintain schedule on busier Friday and Sunday afternoons. We caught the 5pm Friday sailing from Horseshoe Bay and the 5pm Sunday sailing from Nanaimo this past weekend. Since the C's are not able to use the foot passenger walkway at Berth 1, it takes a considerable amount of additional time to complete the foot passenger process via the upper car deck ramp. Combine that with the smaller 20 minute turn-around time at dock, and there's no chance to maintain on-time sailings when you have a full car load.

Yes, this situation arises at HSB whenever berth 2 or 3 are closed for some reason. The morning and early afternoon sailings to Nanaimo are OK because all Departure Bay sailings up to and including the 1500 can share the same berth with Langdale sailings, and can therefore use the overhead walkway. The 1700, 1900, and 2100 sailings, however, are scheduled too close to the Langdale departures to use the same berth. If the tide is low enough for the C's to use the walkway on the sundeck at berth 1.....fine. But right now the tide tables aren't cooperating.

With Berth 2 currently out of service, schedules on all 3 Horseshoe Bay routes can really get thrown out of whack if one ferry is late. This is happening today. The Queen of Coquitlam arrived at HSB at 1245pm (35 mins late) with the Queen of Surrey shortly behind it (on time). The Queen of Capilano was on a similar arrival pace with the Surrey, but since there are only 2 berths currently available, the Capilano will have to sit idle outside the Bay for a while. Pretty frustrating if aboard the Cappy but obviously it'll get the shaft since it'll start its lunchtime layover once docked at Horseshoe Bay.

Is there any way of getting outside of the terminal once you have passed the toolbooths and that your car is in the holding lanes? If no, what are some good vantage points that can be accessed?

As long as you keep your vehicle receipt with you, you can leave the terminal via the foot passenger access walkway from the holding lanes. You will be required to show that receipt for re-entry when you walk through the foot passenger toll booths.
