I heard this on the radio also. Thank goodness it was next next weekend and not this first long weekend after lockdown. Even though it's a Saturday and commercial traffic will be decreased, I still expect a lot of leisure travel and a lot of chaos at Departure Bay as a result of this. Will be interesting... When route 30 came into existence Departure Bay handled all the traffic from it, and route 2, including heavy summer traffic. In more recent years they have also handled traffic from both routes. I think they can do it again for just one day without getting into chaos. Gonna do a ride or two in the AM; can also report back about how "chaotic" it will be.

Departure Bay can handle the additional traffic because this routing has occurred at binging route 30 and when Duke Point was closed.

We had a rude wake-up call at Departure Bay this morning from the Coastal Inspiration sounding its whistle at 5:05 am!

I get Route 30 was running hours late from Thursday night delays running well into Friday. But what caused all the cancellations for Friday afternoon? Was it the Thursday night crew should have also been the Friday night crew. Now why both vessels were affected by this is a little less clear to me. The single berth at Duke is probably the main factor. I wonder if BC Ferries will look at Duke Point to see if it is deem nessecary to add addition berth to Duke Point, it seems like the Duke Point could easily get addition berth due design at build out on other side of the berth.

Fall is in the air ... Duke Point Terminal with Coastal Inspiration at the only berth. I was on board one of the new Gabriola ferries with paulvanb when I shot this photo. 17 August 2023

It would be good to add on a second birth at Duke Point. From what I've heard they were supposed to build a second one there but the project never went through. Looking at it from above, it certainly looks like infrastructure was built to accommodate a second berth. That begs the question though (and I believe it has been brought up on this forum before), if they want to have a Langdale-type berth or "hammerhead," isn't Northumberland Channel a bit tight for the 180° turn that would be required to use what would become berth 2? Update: it seems that, in fact, Duke Point was built to accommodate two additional berths. Reference the bottom left of this image. (Credit to Ferryman for this, I found it in a very old post of his.) Will would third berth go? I think it is safe to assume the second berth would be directly opposite direction of the current berth.
