I have no doubt the complaining occurred but those lights are a result of an overbudget programme with cuts required. Similarly to Duke Point taking over capital funds from the Queen of Prince Rupert replacement project, which BC Ferries had already invested in considerably at the time. It was a time of extraordinarily poor fiscal management in British Columbia.

I think both terminals are useful, but I could see some sailings moved from Route 2 to a new Horseshoe Bay-Duke Point route.

For what its worth they had footage and a story about the dock at Duke Point on CHEK at 6 tonight. The guy over seeing the repairs says the concrete section of the dock moved about 4 meters before moving back leaving a 1 meter gap. Small wonder its taking so long to repair.

A look at the repairs that were needed at Duke Point. Quite substantial, and understandably time consuming. Also, just for clarification on terms, it was the wingwalls that were pushed back a few meters. Also the ramp abuttment (the hinge at the transition from land to the ramp) had to be repaired as well, since the ship came into contact with the apron, similar to when the Queen of Nanaimo did at Village Bay, and Coastal Celebration at Swartz Bay. Although, more substantially in this paticular case.

What about converting Departure Bay to foot-passenger use only for a route directly to Downtown Vancouver and sending all the vehicles and some foot passengers through Duke Point?

Duke Point this afternoon. As you can see, the Dogwood wasn't ever fully removed from this terminal ;D

Queen of Alberni arriving at Duke Point at 5:30pm on May 18, 2012. 2 things of note: 1) The recently rebuilt wing-walls, which don't look very new. 2) The 2 lumber trucks waiting at "Berth 2": The tractor is a BCFerries valet-service tractor. I wonder if the wing-wall repairs were just a temporary fix, until a more permanent fix can be done during the next off-season?

Duke Point is lovely at 5:15am - I think these were 2-second time exposures. Tripod was the deck-7 railing.

I love the challenge of working with time exposures on a vibrating ship. Great job with them!

The video board at Duke Point. - August 30, 2012 That's new. Is it the same one that used to be at Tsawwassen, or did they buy a new one?

That's new. Is it the same one that used to be at Tsawwassen, or did they buy a new one? I thought it was new. I've checked my old photos of Duke Point, and there was no video-tower in summer 2011, but there is one in my May 2012 photos. Where it came from, I don't know.

BCF's Facebook calls it "newly turned on" 26 May 12. That probably is not to-the-day accurate but reasonable enough.

Here is an item (from CBC Radio's Victoria afternoon show All Points West) on the future of BCF's Duke Point & Departure Bay terminals. Have a listen...

Here is an item (from CBC Radio's Victoria afternoon show All Points West) on the future of BCF's Duke Point & Departure Bay terminals. Have a listen... First of all, I wonder why the CBC felt that the head of Victoria's chamber of commerce was the most pertinent person to interview on the question of operating two Nanaimo area terminals. This guy stated at least twice that Duke Point costs $30 million a year to operate, as if closing it would save that amount of money. The interviewer seemed to know next to nothing on the topic, and didn't challenge him on his assertion. In fact, Deborah Marshall stated recently that BC Ferries saved only a small amount of money in operating costs when Duke Point was closed last winter.

Seems silly to me to operate 3 terminals in Nanaimo when everything could be run out of Duke Point. With a good transit link, this would not be a huge issue for foot passengers, especially Gabriola residents.

You might try asking Gabriola residents how silly it would be to have to make the long drive around and up into town, as opposed to the current direct connection. Ferries are supposed to be serving communities, not the other way around.

Well, Gabriola resident footies have to take transit if they have shopping and business to do outside of Nanaimo's downtown core anyway, so I don't see how an additional 10-12 minute bus ride would make much difference. I realize the convenience of direct service to downtown, with Harbour Park mall right there, and all. Just sayin'.
