"Community Fed Up With Quinitsa" That's technically not correct. What the Patrons of Route 6 are requesting of the Transport Minister - Rob Fleming is an "On The Hour" service form Crofton and Vesuvius Bay using the MV Quinsam and Qunitsa. One of the most cost effective solutions in the BC Ferries Network to mitigate Traffic Gridlock and One Way Traffic Gauntlets at Crofton, Vesuvius Bay and to a lesser extent Fulford Harbour as traffic continues to migrate from Route 4 to Route 6.

Looking West from the Crofton Toll Booth on Chaplin St, traffic is shown backed up onto Crofton Rd. to the North. With the introduction of the MV Quinsam 63 AEQ for this Summer, the traffic will stretch around the bend onto Crofton Rd. by 400' to 500'.

This 2 Sailing Wait sign was intended for use with the Quinitsa, with the Quinsam the ferry traffic will be backed up to Sunset Dr. and beyond for those with local knowledge. An event we allegedly saw 3 times or more last Summer. Are Ferry Patrons prepared to travel more this Summer then they have in the last 2? Some suggest it's going to be a crazy busy Summer. This Weekend is the Official Kick Off!

"I am going to complete disagree with you because now and 4 to 8 years in further more communities will be getting Island Class vessels which will increase capacity on all routes."By all means you can completely disagree but try to explain your position to the 2100 Patrons (to date) who are Petitioning Minister Rob Fleming for a proper service on Routes 4 & 6 because BCF can't come to it. Bearing in mind that SSI has the largest community population wise out there, at almost 12,000 Residents. Route 6 hasn't been neglected over the years, some suggest its been completely abandoned. You either have suitable Parking Containment Areas (and wait it out) or Frequent Ferry Service. We don't have either at all 3 Terminals Crofton, Vesuvius Bay & Fulford Harbour. This didn't happen overnight, it's been building for two decades with no preplanning. Look only to the Strategic Planner who suggested in 2003 that Route 6 would need a Vessel of 110 - 118 AEQ by 2013. In the Spring of 2019 BCF introduced the MV Quinitsa 44 AEQ. The Community suggested it was an egregious mistake for Peak Demand Summer Traffic. Within two weeks they demonstrated it wasn't a serious mistake but an unmitigated disaster. So they fobbed off the 61 AEQ Relic. Route 6 is where BCF Management sends Vessels to Die! You just made that point with the suggestion of the Mayne Queen. That trend continues with disregards to Public Safety. It continues unabated by BCF - Traffic Gridlock, One Traffic Gauntlets using our Roadways as parking lots at all 3 Ferry Terminal Communities. Salt Springers are Fed Up! We have two of the least subsidized routes in the entire network, with pathetic Peak Demand Service. Route 6 - line up 1 Hr 15 min prior to in Peak Demand Times for a 20 to 25 min crossing. With the chance of a Sailing Wait. Seriously? Monday's and Thursday's being the Classic Nightmare on Chaplin Street (Crofton) for years. But when is retirement, BC Ferries will probably put two Island Class vessel for hourly departures for 12 hours like they are doing with Gabriola Island and Quadra Island. Refits only take 2 to 3 months not September to April so Quinsam will be back by in two months after being taken out service. I don’t see BC Ferries not going with shuttle class vessel just for one route.

7. Baynes Sound Connector will be lengthened according to BC Ferries will an Island Class goes on Hornby Island. Pardon me for snipping an excerpt from your post yesterday, but this part piqued my interest. Is this for real? Are they really planning on lengthening BSC, or is this just a rumor? I know I'm not as up-to-date on the happenings of BC Ferries as you are, but this is the first time I've heard of it. What kind of auto capacity are they hoping to gain out of this modification, and what's the timeline? I'm assuming long-term, not something that will be done in the near future. Lastly, what's your source for this information? You just said "according to BC Ferries", so I'm curious if you have a link to the source. If this is true, it is certainly evidence of BSC being undersized from the very beginning.

So basically, it's just ideas being thrown out at the FAC meetings - nothing more at this point. A few years back, I attended an information meeting on Denman where the point was raised that the cable barge had only a three or four car capacity advantage over the Quinitsa. A BC Ferries rep impatiently replied to the effect that if it ever came down to it, the boat could conceivably be lengthened. The BSC is essentially a horizontal, floating elevator. the 'engine room' is on the car deck; below, there is not a lot other than a series of voids. It probably would be a fairly uncomplicated job to lengthen it. The tough part would be that it's already at the upper end of what can be hauled across a mile of water by cables, and there have been a lot of issues with hydraulics since it came into service. Adding eighty feet or so to its length would probably mean back to the drawing board for the whole cable system and attendant power plant.

Sturdies Bay Terminal, Galiano Island, with the Salish Eagle in the berth. This was on a busy summer Sunday morning with lots of footies & cyclists disembarking.

With permanent addition of Salish Class to route 5 which double capacity of route, will the route see additional dwell time at terminal for vessels?

What are the size limits for the lay by berth at Fulford? Could the intermediate class or Skeena Queen fit, or are they too wide and/or long?

What are the size limits for the lay by berth at Fulford? Could the intermediate class or Skeena Queen fit, or are they too wide and/or long? Anything bigger than the Bowen/Mayne Queen is too big. Mostly because of the leftover pilings from the now defunct Fulford Marina, that encroach on the approach. Not sure if the Quinsam would fit, but definitely the Skeena would not fit

Super interesting right now to watch 3 Salish ships in/approaching Village Bay with the Cumberland off of route 5A for a bit, the Salish Heron and Raven will hold off on 5 with the Eagle sailing route 9!
Heron and Raven are at Village Bay as we speak, and the Eagle is approaching from Tsawasseen.

A Preedy nice SGI terminal. I have never been to this place before, or for that matter, ridden on this particular ferry ...

Capitol Regional District director Gary Holman's August 9th column in the Driftwood reports that BC Ferries is planning on having two Island class vessels on the Vesuvius route by 2027/28. With that accomplished, the Quinsam is scheduled to join the Skeena Queen in summer service out of Fulford. I have to wonder what the crewing challenges will be in basing at least one more vessel on a gentrifying, very expensive Saltspring Island. Another expense will be a layover berth, most likely at Crofton.

All the berth "dolphins" at Otter Bay have been replaced with the new type.
