A fair amount of the equivalent work has already been done, actually... the removal of asbestos from the boat is nearly complete (there's a little tiny bit left if you know where to look), and the passenger cabin has had its paint and upholstery renewed (albeit in the original colors, which means the change-out has largely gone unnoticed). There's been piece-meal steel replacement prior to all that has transpired this winter, and the control system has been modernized gently. The drive motors were rebuilt a few years back and while we don't actually run her at that speed, the old girl is perfectly capable of twenty knots.
All that and she is a veritable sportscar compared to the Elwha. ;D

I think the same thing is true with the Evergreen class. MV Evergreen State has nice looking pilot houses while those on her sisters look small and like a box.

Actually, the Elwha's pilothouses haven't been modified... the only changes to the Kaleetan and Yakima's pilothouses has been to cant the front windows outward to reduce glare. The Evergreen class all have the same size pilothouses. It's just that the Evergreen State has side entry where the other two have rear entry.

If MV Hyak comes back next week, does that mean that her topside maintenance that was scheduled for Everett has been cancelled? Is that topside work necessary to meet the May deadline for continued service as set by the CG? I think she was already in the yard before that date was set as the result of CG inspections.

WSF news release says they will try to get her back by Wednesday, the 13th. The Chelan will go back to Vashon on Monday, and the Snohomish will be the second boat out of Bremerton.

I don't think the topside work would affect the hull inspection issues. Those have been completely addressed, otherwise it won't be allowed back into service.

Did this latest breakdown of MV Hyak have any relation to the rush to place her back in service before her annual maintance was complete? She was suppose to begin some topside work at Everett this week. Would engine maintenance be considered "topside" rather than drydock work? I wonder if shortcuts were taken when she was tested last night.

I wonder if shortcuts were taken when she was tested last night. No, it wouldn't. The work scheduled for Everett was some replacement of steel on the car deck. "The Contract Work consists of the following repairs to the ferry M.V. HYAK: vehicle deck steel and curb replacement; upper vehicle deck stairway landing deck renewal; inner and outer intermediate shaft straightening; electronic equipment room ventilation installation; prep and paint non skid; and other related work, as specified in the IFB Technical Specifications. The Vessel is 382’2” x 73’2”, and carries 144 automobiles and 2500 passengers. All of the work must be performed within Puget Sound, Washington during the period of December 15, 2007 to February 1, 2008." As we know that got extended out because of the steel renewals needed on the hull.

According to the latest update of the drydock/maintenance schedule, MV Hyak will return to her originally planned maintenance/topside upgrades before returning to service in the Islands.

I truly hope not. We can't afford another Super down at all, let alone that long.
Let's see... with the Spokane back in service, I think we're back to par... no spare boats, though. Anything we could get out of hock at this point would be good.

I see that the Washington Legislature is proposing $15million to refurbish the MV Hyak. Wonder what additional work is needed to bring her up to standards? Could it be that the mighty MV Hyak will turn out to be the most modern of the Supers, rather than the most neglected? ;D

As posted before, the Hyak has been largely refurbished, but it would be nice to see it modernized with newer seats. Sheesh. Sometimes I think you guys wouldn't mind the bottoms falling out of the boats as long as yours isn't getting pinched by an uncomfortable chair. Mind you, the individual chairs on the Hyak do suck. ;D Seriously, I kind of dread an LLU (Later-in-Life Upgrade) for any boat. Retrofits and renovations seldom seem to leave you with an 'improved' vessel; rather, they tend to bring a whole new set of problems. I'd really like to see them leave one Super relatively untainted... the more mods they make, the worse they handle IME.

I wasn't aware there were repairs made last year, so I've no idea. 50-50 shot in any case.

I had the pleasure of riding the Hyak on the milk run from Anacortes to Friday Harbor, Monday night. Everything seemed to be working happily, though to be honest, I never made it upstairs; I spent most of the trip sleeping in my car.

Looks like it is a bad day for MV Hyak . She is out with another steering problem and the International Run today was canceled so MV Chelan could take her place for the morning schedule. Looks like it might be "one of those week ends " in the San Juans.

Think of it as a prelude to summer. We kicked around the idea of holding a "breakdown pool" once but decided that the ethics people would have a hissy fit, it wouldn't look good with the public, and everyone wanted to bet on the July 4th weekend. ;D

I am wondering if MV Hyak will be coming down from the Islands early because she will soon be scheduled for major yard work? Hasn't WSF decided to give her a major overhaul/update similar to those of her sisters? Some of this work has likely been completed, but more is apparently needed. Haven't plans for her "early retirement" also been abandoned?

She is not scheduled for any major yard work anytime soon (the only contracts I saw were for work that was done earlier this year). Supposedly there was money bidgeted for major work, but I have no clue as to whether it's going to happen.

I bet they won't happen until one of the new 144's is in the water and they can actually spare her.

And since no one else has said it, I will state that yes, the 'early retiremnt' plans have long since been abandoned. That idea quietly disappeared about... oh, a year ago or so.
