Photos taken by my colleague Leif, on January 16, 2010. I don't know which ship this is, but I'm sure someone will tell me. (thanks). You'd think they would move away the chairs on Friday nights, and have a dance floor. Outside night shot

I think the above photos are aboard the MV HYAK. She still retains her original furnishings.

It's definitely the MV Hyak. The globe light in the first picture are dead giveaways (the other 3 super class vessels don't have those globe lights in the main cabin outside of possibly storage lockers).

I don't follow the Washington ships as much, so just to confirm, Hyak's the one that could be compared with our Queen of Burnaby, in terms of need of painting, right?

Yes the Hyak looks sick at the moment. I think she actually looks worse than the Burnaby at the moment. I noticed just how bad she's looking last weekend when I went over to Seattle on the Bainbridge ferry. She was departing Seattle as we arrived and the one side especially looks like it's painted orange rather than white.

Wherever you sail our Sound near her, do it in the night. But, under a full moon.

Well, if "The Canadian Viking" likes to see orange on ferries, the next best thing I'll give him are these photos. I went to NYC in October of 1997. Since the ferries are "free" on the Staten Island run, I took many trips. On a couple of them, I took the time and visited the Staten Island Ferry Museum inside the Saint George Ferry Terminal at Staten Island. There are many neat models and artifacts there. I won't show you actual SI ferries on this thread. That's for another thread on another day. So, I'll show you a clean looking orange painted ferry in model form instead. Here we are, inside the SIF Museum on Staten Island. This model is of the MERRELL-Class steamers that operated on the Staten Island run. Three decks for passengers. Other ferries in this class included the KOLFF and VERRAZZANO. The MERRELL and KOLFF ended their days as floating jails at Rikers Island. The VERRAZZANO was languishing at a dock in Brooklyn. Saw all three of them on that visit in 1997. The MERRELL and the KOLFF are gone now. I think that the VERRAZZANO has bit the dust as well. www.correctionhistory.org/html/museum/gallery/ferries/scrapkeane.htmlAnother view of the MERRELL-Class ferry. Interesting to note is the green paint the modeler applied on the hull. It should be blue instead. NOW, FOR THOSE WHO LIKE WHITE PAINT ON FERRIES!Ferry of a bygone era. One of the classic ferries that plied the Staten Island run. This is the PRESIDENT ROOSEVELT. Nice, clean, and mostly white! The underside of the PRESIDENT ROOSEVELT showing the sponsoning of the Main Deck. Many of the earlier ferries in New York, as well as San Francisco Bay, had these. Steel Electrics as well prior to their widening in the late 1950s. This is an end detail view of this ferry. A feature that continues today in New York is the use of two wide passenger ramps that are deployed on the Saloon Deck (that's why you see two end gates on this deck). Also, notice the bow. The former east coast ferries OLYMPIC and RHODODENDRON had about the same radius as these ferries had and the New York ferries of today continue to have these there. The OLY and RHODY had extensions built in 1984 to make their bows conform like the HYAK and the rest of the ferries in the WSF fleet. While we are mentioning New York on this thread, Hopeman Brothers of New York City designed the original interiors of the HYAK, KALEETAN, YAKIMA, and ELWHA. This company is now in Virginia. One last photo from this Museum: Looking forward in seeing the HYAK under fresh paint!

I think she is actually worse now then when you took those photos! If I go over to Seattle in the next couple of weeks I will try to get some shots of her. I will be happy when she looks nice again with a new coat of paint.

BTW: Is the Yakima the Hyak's sistership?

Oh, my. It looks like an army of little children had a dirty-diaper throwing contest at her superstructure.... BTW: Is the Yakima the Hyak's sistership? Yes. There are 4 Super-Class vessels. They've all been modified over the years so each of them are now kind of unique: Elwha Hyak (this shows her better side) Kaleetan Yakima Yakima got her topside exterior and car deck interior spaces painted this year. All that remains now is the exterior. She's scheduled to be in drydock sometime in March, I think. So, I'm guessing that is when that work will be done.

And, if you want a more in-depth look at the Supers, or any of the vessels in the WSF Fleet, I refer you to EGfleet's site: www.evergreenfleet.com/supers.htmlIt is quite comprehensive, and it gives you a history of each vessel.

Neat! BC Ferries should improve their fleet page to resemble that, but we should be able to compare any vessel with any other vessel's silhouette, not just the largest ferry.
