I was on the Hyak 4:30pm sailing Saturday from Friday Harbour to Anacortes. It was my first time on the Hyak. I dident think her interior was all that different than the Elwha which is the only other Super Class ship I have been on. I love those ships cause they are big and roomy and have a Sun Deck you can actually go outside on not like on the Issaqua Class. I was suprised they closed the Galley Area on the ship. I know the Galleys are closed during winter but I thought that whole area you could still access if you just wanted to sit in there. Guess maybe it busy enough. It was fun to get on another WSF Super. The next one I want to get on would be the Kaleetan.

The galley was open on the Kaleetan the last time I traveled aboard it. I think the galley was down on the Hyak for a temporary reason. I remember reading it in their fleet alert bulletins.
I plan on taking a sailing on the Hyak in May when it comes to the Bremerton/Seattle run.

The galleys on all of the ferries up in the islands are closed for the season. They don't operate them during the winter.

And they are kept closed up for several reasons--on the Hyak, there's no way to physically shut off the food prep area from the rest of the galley, and in general we don't have personnel to maintain the additional seating area of the galley. The Sealth, well... there's no way to cordon it off, and when it comes down to it the seating area just isn't that big.

It's been a LONG time since I've seen the Hyak in Bremerton with no rust. She has her DOT logo too. There is a motion sensor in the middle of it though. Hyak by zargoman, on Flickr Hyak in Bremerton by zargoman, on Flickr

Um, what happened to the pix I posted of the Hyak in this thread? Um, if you're talking about the post with the 3 oversized pictures, I deleted it. But I sent it to you by PM, so that you can resize the pics, and then repost.

Ah, gotchya. Wasn't aware that they were oversized (I'm posting from a rather large-resolution monitor and some images seem kinda small here; almost like thumbnails)... Anywho, here ya go. Took some photos of my 2nd most favorite ferry! M/V Hyak by srosenow_98, on Flickr M/V Hyak by srosenow_98, on Flickr M/V Hyak by srosenow_98, on Flickr Finally made my way over to photograph the ol' girl. I have to say that despite the overspray on the picklefork railings (yes, paint overspray of any kind is a big pet peeve of mine; if you're gonna do it, do it right, lol) I was very impressed overall with how clean and fresh the Hyak looked compared to the Kaleetan. I was very impressed with the originality of the vessel, too. I love the original wheelhouse as compared to the Kaleetan (which I also photographed today). In all, I am very impressed and very happy I got the opportunity to photograph it. Despite a sprained ankle! Next stop?: Taking a voyage on the Hyak before she's scheduled to be out of Bremerton!

:)your panorama of Bremerton and the WSF ferres are a welcome relief from the slugfest of our BC ferries parked in Horseshoe bay that another member has posted. Washington State ferries still look like the ferries I grew up with, and I particularly like contenuity with my lifelong experience. :)mrdot.

Rode the Hyak back in March from Friday Harbour to Anacortes and I really liked the ship. Those are my favorite WSF boats are the Super Class. They are roomy and have lots of outside deck space. Pretty plain istead on the Hyak but still she's a cool ship. A different change from BC Ferries riding all the time!

Well, I am pleased to say that I have finally had an opportunity to actually take a crossing aboard the Hyak this evening. Picked up my brother in Kent and we took the ferry back.
I was just in awe at the feeling of stepping aboard a time capsule when I entered that passenger cabin. I could literally feel the atmosphere of 1967 when she took her maiden crossing. I grabbed plenty of photos, too.
In all, it was a wonderful experience.

Also did an HDR of the Hyak at Colman Dock. This was a six-exposure HDR done with the use of the rail @ Colman as a tripod. LOL, those things work wonders! I have to admit. I'm not sure which ferry I like best now. I think it's a tie for first for the Hyak and the Kaleetan as far as Super Class ferries go. I just LOVE that vintage '67 interior of the Hyak, though. Absolutely LOVE it. M/V Hyak, night HDR by srosenow_98, on Flickr

I tend to forget about that nearly vintage 1967 interior (the flooring has been replaced with white; I think the original was olive green), even when I'm working on the boat. It's like I don't see it. As a result it's always a surprise for me to realize there is still one more-or-less unchanged Super class boat out there.
(Actually she has been modified, but most of the 'upgrades' aren't visible to the public.)
And I forgot to add that I really like your exterior shot of the Hyak. What does HDR stand for?

Boy, not that long ago either. There were taken in 2003, if I remember correctly. You can see there was still quite a bit of the old green tile left and the ice cube tray-style lights were there as well.

HDR = High Dynamic Range...
Most higher end digital SLR cameras can do this in-camera. Otherwise it can be done using photos from any camera using HDR software on your computer.
Essentially, an HDR photo is a composite of several photos shot at different exposures. One exposure is shot one, maybe two, f-stops low, another is shot 'normally', while a third is shot one or two f-stops high.
HDR photos can be shot from more than three photos. The view of the Hyak above is apparently made up from 6 photos. As stated, some digital SLR's can do this process completely automatically. Generally, a tripod is required.

I was routinely assigned to bulb-changing on them for a couple of reasons, (a) being that I was (and am) tall enough to reach them without climbing on anything and (b) I knew how to do it without getting electrocuted--the plastic clips had suffered some serious aging over the years. The secret lay in having the special light bulb key (a modified wooden household item) and being able to slip it into the fixture in just the right spot. OSHA and WISHA would be horrified. There's a reason they're gone.

The new(ish) ones have much more consistent lighting too. I think that the floors and the lights and the elevator were all done at the same time in 2005. They also reupholstered the bench seats on the top deck. They are still tan, but they are all the same color of tan and a bit more orange-ish than the old ones. As for the main deck, I have never seen so many variations of tan in my life There are light tans, dark tans, tans with various green-ish shades, dark brown...and so on. The one thing that the Hyak does have is super sturdy tables. Those things have all steel construction underneath them. They sure don't come like that anymore. If it's not going to get a full refurb, it would be really nice to at least get more power outlets. There are only 3 or 4 of them accessible to the public. Makes for a mad dash to the plug for the commuter boats.
