Something else to consider too on any replacement is dependent on the rebuild of the Belleville Terminal; they might not do side loading...

So true 'mrdot' except for the one that has found her new life in the sunny climes of Fiji and the one still attempting to get the heck outta 'dodge' There were a couple, the 'Suzie Q' to be specific that found great peace at the bottom of Davey Jones Locker.

I'm not sure that it's fair to compare the Coho to the Steel Electrics. The Coho seems to have had a significant advantage when it comes to care and maintenance Additionally, she was built with far more advanced methods than were the Steel Electrics. I think you are absolutely correct on all points, but it's important to bear in mind the significance of Transport Canada/USCG requirements for vessel's safe operation. These requirements are constantly changing to bring them in line with modern technology, something the Coho will have an increasingly difficult time bringing up to par. The USCG ultimately did the Steel Electrics in. In addition to this, the Steel Electrics had a full rebuild essentially from the hull-up in the early-mid 1980s. The Coho has had no such rebuild (as of yet). Maybe this kind of life extension is necessary for continued service as Black Ball suggests. I would presume that without an extensive rebuild, the 20-40 year timeline is unrealistic. Good point with regards to the Transport Canada/USCG requirements. It seems likely that regulations will ultimately decide the fate of the Coho. The rebuild of the Steel Electrics was carried out for reasons not applicable to the Coho. I could elaborate but looking at early pictures of the Steel Electrics illustrates this point better than I can.

Don't forget the former Queen of Tsawwassen... she is still lurking somewhere on the B.C. Coast, perhaps anchored in some misty backwater along with the Queen of Richmond.

Don't forget that (using Evergreen Fleet as a source here) the Steel Electrics had had an earlier rebuild of their hulls, which wasn't truly as complete as was believed, which ultimately led to attention being called to the deterioration of the hulls, and the coast guard order to withdraw them. Maybe the Coho is fortunate it hasn't had a rebuild, yet, but if the Steel Electrics had actually had their hulls completely renewed at the time they rebuilt and had sponsons added, they might theoretically still be sailing in the same waters as the Coho.

So, I'm curious now what the plans are for the Belleville Terminal; as I understand the new facility will replace both the Blackball and Clipper sides of operation into one building...

Alaska State Ferry has a few ships that will be sold in the next few years, I wonder if one of them might be a candidate to supplement the Coho. If not replace her

Makes little sense to replace an aging vessel with one almost as old.

Per again my contacts in the maritime industry, the only thing that would be a direct replacement and be compliant with the Jones Act without waiver would be a few select HSC-type catamarans in the used market.

Darn fine shot of the old girl there 'Wett Coast'. She, along with several of our learned forum members can take heart that 'she' and 'we' don't look a day over 30! Happy sailing in 2016 everyone!

I am suprised both WSF and the the Coho are not running and even the Clipper is out too for a bit. You think maybe Blackball and WSF could talk and arrange something for that time the Coho is out to bring the Sidney run into service. It just means now BC Ferries will be more busy during this time and with both Spirit ships out this month should be interesting.

Maybe the maintenance happens because the traffic demands don't meet income needs.

It has been this way every year but it's only been for like 2 weeks not 2 months! At least WSF could of kept the Sidney run through this but what is more traffic on route 1 anyways just means more waits with 2 Coastals! Awesome!

Blackball's Coho en route to Victoria - 30 December 2015. Race Rocks Light House is seen in the distant left background. This view is from Victoria's Beacon Hill Park, and was shot with a 450 mm equivalent zoom lens. A cropped version of this will serve for the next month or so as my 'sig pic'. © WCK-JST by Jim Thorne, on Flickr

Blackball has done a terrific job at maintaining their vessel over the course of her service career. One would be hard pressed to guess her age if one wasn't a knowledgeable ferry forum member. We should all look that good when, as time rolls on, endless ocean waves have passed beneath our keels?

I will be quick to admit I know nothing about construction, particularly when it comes to marine work, so this post is rather uneducated. However, the Coho is supposed to be back in service at the end of this week (28 Feb) and the terminal which is undergoing renovation in the Victoria Harbour looks rather incomplete for an on-time restoration of service. Will be interesting to see if they make it, and I will be really impressed. I haven't been downtown for a few days but apparently they are working long full days. Photos:

Judging from those pictures, finishing the project by the end of the month looks pretty 'iffy' to me.
