So, does anyone know exactly how the Starboard Turbo trouble started? You'd think a GM-EMD 645 engine is bullet-proof, but what happened?

Here's a little video I shot last Saturday, April 29, from the aft sundeck on MV Coho as we pulled away from the terminal in Victoria and sailed out of the Inner Harbour. I guess this is more of a "scenes from Coho" video as opposed to a video of the vessel itself. That said, you'll still get to hear Coho's signature whistle, and I got a pretty nice view of FRS Clipper V, and even a little view of Quadra Queen II at the Point Hope Shipyard. Enjoy!

Enjoy, I did! It looks great, especailly in 4k. What did you use to film this? Just my trusty iPhone. I find it does a pretty good job with video, and I got a nifty handgrip holder that makes it easier to hold the phone when shooting videos or photos.

Does anyone have any insight into why the Coho has a forward portside loading door on the car deck? She only ever loads starboard in Victoria, and from the stern in Port Angeles. Only thing I can think of is access while in refit.
EDIT: Now I remember... she used to dock on the other side of the harbour in Victoria. But I wonder if that door is still operational?

The car deck access is the same as on Alaska's 'Blue Canoes', doors on both starboard & port just aft of the bow, and at the stern. Its been many years since that port side access has been used on the Coho.
I wonder if its possible for the Coho to come alongside on its port side at its current Victoria berth if they had to? I think not.

I think it is possible, but not an easy manouvre. When she leaves the dock she reverses up the upper inlet, then swings around to head out to sea. Can be an bone rattling experience probably setting many car alarms!

RV on fire on the car deck in Victoria, happening now. Tentatively no injuries. I had the wrong side. Occurred in Port Angeles. Latest update from Black Ball: Sailing Update: As a result of a vehicle fire onboard the 3pm sailing from Victoria to Port Angeles we cancelled the 5:15pm sailing from Port Angeles and the 7:30pm sailing from Victoria on May 16. We are thankful for the efforts of our crew and the Port Angeles Fire Department in containing the fire.
All sailings will be operating as scheduled for tomorrow, May 17. We appreciate everyone’s patience and apologize for any inconvenience this has caused.-- Good news!

Day 4: In Victoria July 22, 2024 The Coho is a wonderful reminder of all of the ships that were based on her design. It is basically a time capsule to the 1960s. I was talking to one of the older staff onboard on the return trip I did, remarking at how vintage all of the interior still looks. I asked whether she knew if anything had been updated (other than safety equipment). She said no, and that it is the full intention of the company to keep the ship looking exactly as it did on day 1. Some of the furniture has been reupholstered, but they have endeavoured to use the same colours and materials as it was originally. DSC_0265 by Sean Goerzen, on Flickr DSC_0207 by Sean Goerzen, on Flickr The grand Spaulding staircase is something special. As soon as I started walking up I felt an incredible sense of familiarity from riding on all of the Vs and Bs. While the New West still has it, with all of the paneling that now covers the walls it no longer has the same echo as you are walking up (sadly!) DSC_0217 by Sean Goerzen, on Flickr I love all of the colour tones used on the Coho. It is incredibly retro! The curved window is also such a cool feature. A shame that it didn't continue on to the Vs and Bs. DSC_0237 by Sean Goerzen, on Flickr The tradition of wooden name boards on ferries in Washington is a good one. It is too bad BC Ferries didn't continue that. I really like the look of the bridge wing here that doesn't have the support like the Sidney and Tsawwasssen. DSC_0272 by Sean Goerzen, on Flickr It never ceases to amaze me how different angles of ferries make them look so different. I really like the straight on shot of the Coho. So simple, and of course, grand! DSC_0298 by Sean Goerzen, on Flickr For years I didn't realize that the Coho's superstructure was half painted with grey. It always looked like a shadow effect to me! DSC_0307 by Sean Goerzen, on Flickr I believe the smoke here was coming from the recently started fire at the Sooke Potholes

Sad News for Black Ball and Coho: Captain John "Jack" Cox, has "crossed the bar". Anyone here who knew him, please forward condolences to his family and colleagues via "Black Ball Ferry Line". He had just published a book of his "Christmas Card" ships too. I've added the link to that too. He had been assisting me in my research for a biography on Phil Spaulding, and even answered some of my questions about Eastern/Western/Admiral Cruises. Him fondly talking about the Ariadne, Emerald Seas, APL's Postwar Ocean Liners, even Kalakala, and Coho's early days- all wonderful conversations. When I told him that a ship he had heavily influenced the design-of, RCCL's former "Nordic Empress" was sailing in India as a Cruise Ship, he was flabbergasted! God's speed Captain Cox; may you be either sailing your old tug on Lake Whatcom, or having a drink by Ariadne's fireplace. Captain Cox's Obituary
