I like how there is so much room inside on the Elwha! Take out all the chairs and you could have a dance floor, lol!

Those open areas at the ends of the main passenger cabin, where all the Eames Chairs are, have been used in the past for exactly that purpose. I seem to recall a group of square dancers "dosey-doing" on Elwha, or one of the other Supers, quite a number of years ago. It also makes for a good meeting place. OPALCO (Orcas Power and Light Company) holds their annual meeting on board the ferry. I think they do it on the inter-island ferry now, but they used to do it on the mainland-bound ferry, and most of the time, it was a on a Super.

They would have a nasty tendency to show up right after we had freshly resurfaced the floors and polished them and whatnot. Then they would want to put their special non-skid dancing wax down and scratch the he.. out of the deck. I told them once that the buffing compound we use meets the OSHA non-skid requirements (a truth, BTW) and as such they could not put their wax down. They weren't terribly happy but I noticed nobody slipped or fell.

They can only hold their dance on the Elwha or Hyak as the Yakima and Kaleetan have had permanent furnishings installed over most of the "dance floors."

Here is an August 1996 photo of the M/V Elwha at Sidney, B.C. The name is a little hard to read but I am nevertheless fairly certain that this is the Elwha. Photo © JST. This is from my Flicker Site. Scanned from a Konicolor negative using ViewScan software and my Nikon CoolScan V ED.

Definitely the Elwha. The life raft stations, the size of the white band on the stack, and the elevator are a dead giveaway (the other super class vessels didn't get elevators until the middle part of the previous decade).

Also, they hadn't "fixed" the green stripe on the funnels and it was elevated off the deck (they simply painted over the DOT stripes and, unlike the other Supers, the gap beneath them was white instead of green).

I really like this look of the Super class, with the multi-deck superstructure and high wheelhouse. I've always been fond of the Supers in profile as well. Visibility from the pilothouse is excellent when compared with some other classes (though the Yakima and Kaleetan's wheelhouses are superior to the unmodified Elwha and Hyak). The visibility from the Rhododendron's pilothouse is probably the worst in the current fleet, with the Evergreens running a close second (from days of yore, the final incarnation of the Steel-Electric pilothouses could probably compete).

The Elwha, which is the International sailing, is approximately 25 minutes behind schedule due to rough seas. The vessel is following a storm route. This will affect the 1:55 pm departure from Friday Harbor. Updates will occur when conditions change.
Wow. That was quick. Day one and the Elwha is already showing her stability issues. Granted, it was fairly windy yesterday, but I suspect the Chelan might not have gone the storm route. Will be interesting to see what happens today. National Weather Services forcast for Haro Strait is: GALE WARNING Today: SE wind 31 to 36 kt decreasing to 19 to 24 kt in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 50 kt. Rain. Wind waves 4 to 6 ft.

How long is the Elwha on the international run for?? I have only been on two of the Super's the Elwha and the Hyak I really want to get on the Yakima and Kaleetan!

According to the maintenance schedule, for the entirety of the Fall Schedule. The maintenance schedule projects out to January 1st, 2012. This is where the Supers will be: Elwha: Anacortes-San Juans-Sidney for entirety of fall schedule Hyak: Anacortes - San Juans until mid Oct / Seattle-Bremerton until mid Dec / Eagle Harbor until Jan 1st Kaleetan: out of service for most of the fall schedule, mostly at Dakota Creek in Anacortes - will be back at Seattle - Bremerton in mid Dec Yakima: Anacortes - San Juan Islands for entirety of fall schedule

That's the side that got dinged up bad in the 1990 Arctic Express. I wonder if anyone has any pix of it being worked on aside from the one at EGFleet's website? Seems there aren't a lot of pix of the Elwha around.

After returning to service in the fall of 2007.

I think right now the best interiors are the Yakima and the Kaleetan even though I have never been on those boats before I want to travel on them. Imagine if the Elwha was full and every seat was taken I bet they have never been like before where they have been totall full up with no seats at all. lol! So the Supers were not built in Seattle?? Sorry I dont know much about WSF. Where were they built??

Hopeman Brothers did the original interiors. They all sailed north under their own power. I throw some older shots of her up... Building the boat. The above photos show the ELWHA nearing launch time and boarded up for her northbound delivery voyage. Interesting to note, while the new ELWHA did her sea trials on San Diego Bay, she met the old ELWHA. The old ELWHA was built in 1927 as GOLDEN SHORE for San Francisco Bay. In the late 1930s, she came north to Puget Sound as ELWHA. In 1944, she went south to San Diego and was renamed SILVER STRAND. The SILVER STRAND was still running the San Diego to Coronado run when the new ELWHA was doing her trials. How neat it would be to see the old and new ELWHA(s) meet! A new bridge gave the ferries on San Diego Bay the "pink slip" in 1969.

Elwha as seen from the shores of Salt Spring Island in mid-October 2011. - from the beach at Ruckle Park, and Elwha is in Canadian waters, headed for Sidney. Yes, the image is blurry from far away, but the point is that I could see a WSF ship from a ways away in the Canadian gulf islands.
