The ferry wasn’t evacuated, and the equipment was turned off, said Susan Harris-Huether, state Ferries customer information manager. After receiving approval from the U.S. Coast Guard, the ferry returned to service within a half hour after returning to Anacortes. The incident wasn’t expected to affect galley service, which is provided by a contractor Olympic Cascade, Harris-Huether said. Also, the Hyak, which had been having steering problems this morning, was repaired and returned to service around 2:45 p.m., sailing from Anacortes to Friday Harbor, ferries officials said.

The Elwha is only the relief boat for the Sidney run. It hasn't been regularly assigned to the run since last fall, and then only because the Chelan was needed elsewhere.
The Elwha hasn't been the regular Sidney boat since she smoked a drive motor over two years ago. As the Chelan can be operated on the run in a less expensive manner, don't look for the Elwha to be the Sidney boat on a regular basis anytime soon.

It's not July 4th, but the MV Elwa is having problems this morning near the Shaw Island landing. She has lost power and needs a tow.

Since the Elwha spent a little time drifting the thought of anchors crossed my mind. I know the WSF boats obviously carry them, but how often if ever do they get used outside of training exercises?

When they were having problems with the old Ross-Hill propulsion systems, they were used quite often. On more than one occasion the Nisqually's anchor was dropped in order to drag her to a halt when the system wouldn't respond. According to an assistant engineer I heard coming off the Elwha today, a hose split which sprayed the electrical panel, frying on the electronics.

The story that the US Coast Guard distributed to the media: Press Release Date: August 7, 2008 Contact: Petty Officer Shawn Eggert 206-220-7237 CAUSE OF FERRY ELWHA DISABLING FOUND SEATTLE - Coast Guard investigators from Sector Seattle discovered the cause of today's disabling of the ferry Elwha near Blakely Island. An apparent cooling system failure in equipment for one of the vessel's main propulsion electrical systems is responsible for the vessel becoming disabled while in service. The ferry, now back under power, will be moved to Eagle Harbor, Wash., for repairs. It is expected to take two days for all necessary repairs to be made to the vessel. The ferry Elwha was drifting in deep water today after it became disabled about a half-mile from Blakely Island with over 200 people aboard. The Coast Guard Cutter Wahoo from Port Angeles, Wash., and the Coast Guard Cutter Osprey from Port Townsend, Wash., were enroute to the scene along with an MH-65 helicopter crew from Air Station Port Angeles and the tug Lindsay Foss when the Elwha's power returned. The Lindsay Foss and a smallboat crew from Station Bellingham are escorting the Elwha into Anacortes. Navy and Canadian assets were prepared to assist if necessary. =========================================== And...... I think I'm getting tired of hearing all of the political nonsense every time something happens on a ferry. There are commentators all over who take every mechanical incident on a ferry and say things like "Is this the result of the state mismanaging its ferry system?" No. It's the result of mechanical issues sometimes happening on any piece of equipment. Ahoy to newspaper writers, TV editors, and bloggers -- GET A LIFE! If 200 people on a light rail train had to be towed to their destination, it wouldn't have been the result of a breakdown of management at the transit system's offices. It would have been the result of a breakdown of a part on the train. The bus has mechanical problems sometimes. Your car has mechanical problems sometimes. So does the ferry. Get over it, media!

Steve, what I was in reference to was the fact that they had made a point where they mentioned all the troubles the state system had indicating of bad management of the state ferry system which I thought was rather out of the point. Or is the case different?

Or is the case different? Oh, I completely agree with you. I was merely passing on the info that the Elwha was going to be out later than expected. (I was tired and hit "quote" instead of "reply.") Here's the tidbit in the Tacoma Tribune: The Associated Press SEATTLE – Washington State Ferries said Thursday that it expects the 144-car ferry Elwha to be out of service until at least late next week because of an apparent cooling system failure. The Elwha went dead in the water Wednesday in the San Juan Islands. It was carrying 100 cars and more than 200 people. The 90-car ferry Sealth is replacing the Elwha.

Apparently sea trials hadn't gone exactly smoothly and no one was quite sure why WSF was sending her up in the first place.

I've kind of gotten the impression that nobody down at the office quite gets that they can't 'order' a boat to run well. This is particularly true of the Elwha, which has been the victim of experimental surgery one too many times...

I'm guessing they needed the extra capacity due to this: WSDOT Ferries Division adjusts Saturday, Aug. 16, evening schedule to accommodate San Juan County Fair trafficDate: Wednesday, August 13, 2008 Contact: Hadley Greene, Communications Manager, 206-515-3913 FRIDAY HARBOR – The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) Ferries Division will delay the 10:00 p.m. sailing from Friday Harbor on Saturday, August 16, to accommodate traffic leaving the San Juan County Fair. The 10:00 p.m. sailing from Friday Harbor will depart 30 minutes later than scheduled, at 10:30 p.m. Subsequent departures from Orcas, Shaw and Lopez islands will also be affected. WSDOT is making this schedule adjustment on the last day of the fair to better serve the large number of customers returning home from the fair, and to help accommodate the transport of livestock returning to Orcas, Shaw and Lopez islands that evening.

Any updates as to when the Elwha will be back in service? The Sealth is supposed to be going into drydock on the 25'th and I'm assuming that will be delayed if the Elwha isn't back by then.

She's scheduled to be back Monday. I don't think the Sealth can miss her drydock appointment. I was told by one of the dock workers yesterday that the time was scheduled a year in advance and this was for the annual CG hull inspection. If the Elwha for some reason crumps it I suspect they'd cancel the Sidney run for the day and use the Chelan.
