how long is the Kaleetan in the San Juans for?? All summer? Yes. Karl, we've really got to get you used to going here for WSF fleet movements and vessel assignments: www.wsdot.wa.gov/NR/rdonlyres/4FF4CEC1-9FEB-4BE5-85EF-B9E9F06662E6/0/VesselStatus219.pdfTo get to the above document from the WSF home page, click on the Plans, Publications, and Statistics link, then on the Vessel Maintenance Activities link, and finally on the Maintenance, Drydock, Inspection Needs and Service Impacts pdf link. Yes, it's a bit of drilling down in to the website to find it, but it will answer a lot of your questions about where vessels are, and are supposed to be in the near future. Yes, things do change, and this document does not always catch those last minute alterations, but by and large, it holds pretty true.

Somewhat simpler.

That's why I gave you the direct link and also how you can get to it from the home page. As far as Kaleetan's positioning goes, you are correct, we will not know until she starts service, but my guess is Kaleetan will be running as the Number 2 boat, which would be Yakima's normal summer schedule assignment.

I count 182 characters in the above post that you typed, including the effort of hitting the space-bar between the words. That's a lot of effort. Bookmarking and then going back to a link isn't that much of a hassle, compared to hitting 182 keys. I believe you can do it. (you can also post photos)

Yup it's a lot easier than searching through pages to try and find something on this forum! That bookmark is a good idea though! I don't even take my camera anymore on ferry trips I just use my iPhone camera and for not posting on the forum I don't see the point seeing in group trips everyone takes the exact same photos all the time! I probably will take photos when I go somewhere different like Anacortes! I have sort of lost interest in taking tons if photos like I used to unless something significant comes up like ships being retired!

That's what I've been told as well. Chelan as #1, Kaleetan #2, Hyak #3, (random) #4, and Elwha as #5. Subject to change, of course.

Can we pin a link to that page as the first post in the WSF Vessel Shifts thread? It kinda makes sense to have a "common resources post" as the first post in each thread with pertinent topics, a sort of FAQ. For example this thread could have a first post with a link to Kaleetan's page on the WSF fleet guide, Steve's site etc... Though onces the thread has been made it might not be possible to go back...

well being the Kaleetan is hopefully gonna be number 2 that means she will be the 2:00pm out of Anacortes and 3:45pm out of Friday Harbour which makes it perfect for a day trip and round trip on the Kaleetan. I would probably do it on a Sunday as there is a 10pm from Tsawwassen Sunday's which might make it easier.

Hi everyone, I am a new member and can't wait to start posting. The Kaleetan is by far my favorite vessel in the whole WSF fleet. Welcome to the West Coast Ferries Forum! The KALEETAN has been a good ferry in the WSF fleet. And she continues to be!!A little background on the life of the Superferry KALEETAN: After arriving Puget Sound from National Steel of San Diego, she began service on the Winslow run in 1968. In 1973, the new Jumboferry SPOKANE replaced the KALEETAN on the Winslow run. The KALEETAN went to Kingston. The KALEETAN went to the San Juan Islands after the 1973 peak season and has been to Sidney as well. I took a ride aboard her from Sidney to Anacortes in the summer of 1976. A delightful early afternoon trip! On February 13, 1979, a fierce windstorm swept through Puget Sound, sinking half of the Hood Canal Bridge. The KALEETAN re-inaugurated the Edmonds to Port Townsend run discontinued by Black Ball many years before. It was a 90 minute run with a Super and Jumbo (each taking turns on the one boat run). The TILLIKUM phased the long run out in the spring of 1980 when the Lofall to South Point run was re-established (it took her 2 hours to do the trip). Lately, the KALEETAN has been on the Bremerton run. She also has had an odd assignment or two at Vashon Island (one of them on the run to Colman Dock while Fauntleroy was being redone).
Hope you find this forum fun. Enjoy your voyage with us, a "family" of ferry fans sharing our love and stories of ferries here on the Salish Sea and abroad!

Hi Everyone! I did a trip up in the San Juans last Friday to ride the Evergreen State, and the Kaleetan was the ferry that I rode up to the Islands, so here are a few pics. Loading at Anacortes, it was a full sailing, though being a Super it didn't feel crowed in the cabin. Something new on Kaleetan that I haven't noticed before: They've recently installed these security gates at the stairs to the upper deck, and security doors on the interior stairs, as well. I guess it's a sure-proof way of making sure passengers cannot get to the upper deck when they close it off. And, here's a nice pic of Kaleetan in Upright Channel, as seen from Evergreen State

Those gates must be a precursor to cutting the crew back. Makes sense in the Winter.

From what I've heard the green paint wears off slower, or at least at sight it looks like it.

I don't recall them ever being actually painted grey; that was more a matter of too many layers of white paint and too many butts. They just don't come clean after a while. I know I was campaigning a few years ago to paint the benches gray or green; looks great!

That just completely mars the entire appearance of that vessel.
That has to be the ugliest abomination I've ever laid eyes on.

I accept the purpose of the gate being function, rather than form; I groove to the green benches (as someone who had to try to maintain the white ones).

I cannot see any logical reason for them being there and it completely mars the appearance and the otherwise outstanding design of the Supers.

I cannot see any logical reason for them being there and it completely mars the appearance and the otherwise outstanding design of the Supers. Because under certain manning levels, the upper deck of the vessel is closed off to public access. And the USCG didn't find a chain and a sign to be sufficiently secure. I promise you, they weren't put there just to annoy you.

If it's closed off to public access, then how the hell do people access the galleys? I can't imagine the thought of no galley access on a ferry as large as the Kaleetan.
On the Supers, they're up top to begin with!
That makes absolutely no sense at all.
